Just walked by and looks the place was shut down by the health department. Anybody know what happened?
-
Wow- and they had just finished renovating. Wonder if it has anything to do with the new grading system..."...you can choose the rain....but I choose the sun..." - N. Costa
-
sucks. i shoulda had that cubano one more time.
-
Hopefully they work on their grits during this closing. They were shameful.
-
this place was awful

Food is ok, but it takes forever. ....I have no idea why people wait for it or Tom's, when Teddy's and Purity are just as yummy, cost less and have no wait. It baffles my mind. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
Been there for lunch a couple of times, it's okay. Went there for dinner once, wanted some wine, waitress knew nothing about the wine offerings, after her third trip back to the bar to relay our question to the barman, we left.
-
you have no idea why people wait for tom's? really?
-
i also don't know why people wait for tom's. the place is more a scene than anything.
-
mr. met » you have no idea why people wait for tom's? really?
. Really. I choose to have an orange slice and cookie at home, rather than in line. Then I sit at a big comfy table at Teddy's or Purity. Food is equally yummyFor better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
the food is good at tom's, and i'm not sure it's much more expensive than teddy's, if at all. tom's also has way more stuff. teddy's is good too.

I liked Cafe Shane's frittata but I really loved their home fries: crispy coated goodness. But, their service was horrific. BTW, in making this post, the HSBC right-rail ad is obscuring most of this reply box and the left-column is consuming a lot of real estate. Perhaps you need to adjust the width?I believe in peace, bitch.

think it has anything to do with this blog post from earlier in the week? the commenters seem to say it was a one-time accident, but maybe it caused a chain reaction? http://www.brooklynexposed.com/index.php/articles/single/put_em_on_blast_do_not_eat_at_cafe_shane/you're welcome to stay, but even your company must compliment the feng-shui.

i liked chicken and waffles. i always wanted another piece of the chicken though. and the cubanos. but there's probably a better place for that. i just don't know about it.

@theindecisionpigeon are you serious? the things in that post are sooooo weak.

you mean teddy's the greek place on washington? you go there for diner food? eggs, grilled cheese, milk shakes, etc.? i like teddy's but don't think of it as a sub for tom's."Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait." -
1. Perhaps the Borders of Crown Heights are expanding. 2. I sometimes go to Teddys for Brunch, but often for Greek Diner Food. ....Tom's serves American food, and is often too crowded for my tastes. It is always too decorated for my tastes, but I feel they should be able to decorate it as they choose. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Subject: zero sads
Shane's? Was a great spot about 5 years ago, always a line waiting, but something happened. They have high turnover, and the wait staff is inattentive. It's been a couple years since I went, but the only thing I really remember I liked were the home fries. Tom's is the best. Period. If you don't want to wait in line, that's fine by me. I can get in quicker, and more food for me. The food is home-cookin' quality. The service is excellent. In New York, 98% of the time the busier a place is, the better it is. How many songs were written about Shanes? Teddy's is good, but it's diner quality food. I still prefer their burger over Dutch Boy's though. At least it comes with fries. Every time I walk by Shane's, I see these chairs stacked up outside for people waiting in line to use (just like at Tom's), but there are never any people waiting!! (unlike Tom's). I won't have a sad if they close permanently.Be civil to all; sociable to many; familiar with few; friend to one; enemy to none. -Ben Franklin -
whynot_31 » Food is ok, but it takes forever.
I thought that it was just us on a bad night! Went there once, waited about 45 minutes for decent (but not extreme-wait worthy) food, and have not been back since. Also, I got a kick out of all the "Do Not..." signs on wall. What's up with that?whynot_31 » ....I have no idea why people wait for it or Tom's, when Teddy's and Purity are just as yummy, cost less and have no wait. It baffles my mind.
Ditto. Tom's is OK, but it is certainly not worth waiting an hour in line. I didn't know Teddy's did breakfast, but that is great to hear. That's pretty much our go-to, keep-it-simple, no-fuss-no-muss neighborhood place for dinner. -
BKChickie » Tom's is OK, but it is certainly not worth waiting an hour in line.
An hour? We go a lot -- I LOVE LOVE LOVE their eggs florentine with fries and their spicy sauce Man....so good.......And I've never waited more than 30 minutes --- and that includes my pre-breakfast cup of coffee, cookie, oranges, toast w/ honey, cinn&suger .... I enjoy the line, honestly. -

zero. how many songs were written about tom's? zero. the suzanne vega song was written about the tom's diner on broadway at 112th st in morningside heights, where she used to go when she was a student at barnard. why it's framed on the wall of our tom's you'll have to ask gus."Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait." -

Now, if I'm around there on a weekday morning, when there is no line, I might stop in. On a weekend? Forget it. There's no reason to wait for a decent breakfast around here. I also hate eating near the start of the line: so many hungry people looking at your table longingly, wondering how fast you're going to eat that eggs florentine and get the hell outta there so that they can sit down. I don't like to feel guilty for lingering over my coffee. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Tom's, I'm just saying that I don't get the hype. -
Shane's believes it will return.
Guys doing construction inside seem to support flyer.
The story is that DOH closed them over something that must be corrected via construction.....

Subject: Cafe Shane closing
WOW! this is crazy! Funny how things happen though. I have been a customer of Cafe Shane for over three years and I must say that overall my experiences have been Great! The owner has always been wonderful. He always takes time to make sure that his customers are doing well and that their needs are being met. However, it seems to be a different story when he's not around. When he's not there, it's hit or miss. Don't get me wrong, the overall experience is good, but if you ask me, I think that he should focus more on saving his business than trying to save all of these troubled people that he employs. Case in point..............I have not had a day that while in Cafe Shane and he's there, that I have not overheard him giving a staff member some enlightning words of wisdom. Hell, his life messages are sometimes so moving, that I leave there questioning some of the Shit that I do. Dude! Stop being a mentor and save your business! I also recall him just talking about the conditions the landlord has in the basement and how he has been fighting with him to correct them. Good Luck! I WILL BE THERE once Cafe Shane reopens.... -
I am very confident that cafe shane will reopen and be better than ever!..I love that place my friends and i have eaten there religiously for years and I have never been disappointed with the food. The owner is an amazing business man and employer just like the last post stated. He does mentor his employees which is great however his main focus is and always has been his business. This is the reason why he keeps encouraging his employees. He is not trying to have anyone go postal in there..lol.. Seriously his passion is to bring the best out of people and bring a different vibe to his community. This is one if the reasons he hires young people,to give them a chance to become responsible and productive adults.I think this makes him an even better business man. At times his employees are not as professional as they should be when he is not around but I am very aware of it so I dont let that affect my experience. One of the main reasons I eat there is because of the owner.I enjoy my experience there and wish there were other places like it. Cafe Shane is on its way to excellence because the owner will not have it any other way.He is a diligent and dedicated black man with a vision and takes pride in everything he does.I will continue to support cafe shane and the owner in any way I can he definitely deserves it. This is a minor setback and I am not concerned with the health dept report because I know there is construction going on.I know the type of establishment it is so i am not worried about what is in that report. Cafe Shane has stood for this long and I am excited to see what happens after the expansion. Have a great day folks!!
-
OK, so it's 3:45am in the morning and I decide to check Cafe Shane to see if they have posted any updates on them reopening. This is so bad. I live at 798 Washington Ave (right upstairs from Cafe Shane) and let me first say that Cafe Shane is getting a BUM RAP! If anyone is to blame for this is our landlord, or should I say SLUMLORD. Get this, I have lived here for the past 3 years and there has always been problems. There have been security problems throughout and a faulty sewer system. Everytime that thing backs up, you would think you were living in a FREAKING SWAMP! The flies make there way throughout the building. Our new problem is that this idiot installs three trash compactors directly from the street, to the basement and never sealed around any of them and with the amount of rats running up and down Washington Ave and in and out of them, I am sure the basement must be a NIGHTMARE! As a concerned nieghbor, I felt a need to speak up. I will stop by to see you to let you know that if you need my help in anyway fighting this, I am here. Just keep your music down, that is the biggest problem that I have with CAFE SHANE. Stay Strong................"Young Man" By the way, I saw Dumb and Dumber (our supers lol) reparing the sidewalk around one of the compactors, hopefully this will help you. Concerned.
-
How has it gotten a bad rap? Do I care why service is slow? Do I care why vermin are there? I will just go someplace where I perceive less vermin, and better service. Outcomes are more important than causes in such instances. Good luck to ShanesFor better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

I agree w some points..but vermin alert is totally invalid. There are rats and mice everywhere. None of us would be able to get on the subway if even minimum standards where applied evenly. A walk through every establishment that sells/serves/prepares food would show signs of some vermin. Cafe Shane is slow as shit.. agreed. Every menu item is not something I crave..agreed . They are no dirtier or infested than anyplace else. The totally arbitrary way the new health standards are being rated and applied is something out of 1950..A,B..if one guy has to post a rating everybody else should also. From a deli making an egg sandwich to a 200 dollar a plate place. This thing is like a typical NY bridge or road repair..work so fucking slow that by the time you are at one end the other end already needs repair and re inspection. If all this about public safety spend a few 100 thousand letting people know what to look for.."If you don't see an A or B in the window where you are eating or buying don't go there and call us(Gov) so we can shut them down". .. They have created an agency process that potentially could cost all of us 10's of millions. Shane's is a great example..loss of taxes.jobs, expanding negative effects example. Changed traffic pattern for people who sell them milk, meat, paper products, beer, wine, linen service, employees in limbo. The area residents look at this as blemish and the negative effect will take some time to overcome. There is an easy solution that is used throughout the US..have the places inspected by a team of 3 to 4 people. The inspections in a small place are done in a tenth of the time..* most critical issue a pass fail certificate is given that day and move on ..not another process where there is bidirectional snail mail stupidity. The public is served by safer cleaner eating establishments and it's done without and additional few hundred dollars per inspection which equals 10's of millions city wide. Why create a new agency criteria that is already outdated everywhere else. Everybody wants clean safe places to eat the current inspection regime does nothing toward this end it only penalizes the unlucky place that got inspected.Walk the streets not everybody has an A,B or failed notice. Piecemeal is bullshit
-
So, why have they shut down this time? More health code stuff, or gone for good?
-
I saw they were closed, but did not see the notices the city usually glues on the door if they were closed by DOH, or for not paying taxes.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
28 or more points is a C.
but "Grade Pending" with 38 Points w/Most Recent Graded Inspection Date 10/12/2011I suppose a C could harm a place like Shanes....
El Gran Castillo De Jagua when it gets a C it just adds to the local flavor...
BTW Anyone Notice how Tom's Hides their "B" above to the left of the door .. way above your head?between 0 and 13 points earn an A,
14 to 27 points receive a B
28 or more a C -

Heads up!
Cafe Shane may soon close for good.
My sources inform me that an entity "Mrs. Dorsey’s Kitchen LLC" has applied for a Beer/Wine lic for this site.
Entities often apply for an alc lic before finalizing the purchase of a site to ensure that it would be feasible/ profitable. If they get the permit, they then close the deal....

Yes!
I think that grilled cheese is becoming what pizza used to be to NY.
...one can have several places in a neighborhood, and they all might survive.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
I think that place is way too big to just do grilled cheese, even if it also serves wine and beer. Will be interesting to see what happens.
-
yes, the people that own Glady's (at Lincoln and Franklin) concluded that they could make far more $ on dinner type food (i.e. not grilled cheese), and have yet to open for lunch as a result.
I am optimistic that a Washington Avenue location is still affordable enough that I can get a somewhat simple sandwich.
I am a somewhat simple man.
