Subject: Cheryl's
In case you're planning a trip, I just walked by and it's closed by order of the department of health. Health and mental health actually, which opens up some interesting possibilities.Brooklynian » Forum » Prospect Heights »

oh no!! I LOVE their brunch...was actually hoping to go on Sunday.
-
The NYC health dept must have a score to settle. This place is spotless.
-
Whoa. I'm surprised to read this. I wonder if it's some kind of permitting or approval technicality.
-
There was another sign when I wen t past just now saying they were closed until the 17th while they got paperwork taken care of. So it might be something as simple as licensing approval.
-
How many times a year are they supposed to get inspected? http://167.153.150.32/RI/web/detail.do?method=detail&restaurantId=41191438&inspectionDate=20090425
-
Here are some specifics on the violations: http://nyc.everyblock.com/restaurant-inspections/by-date/2010/3/11/2940381/
-
I read somewhere that the health dept is going to start a grading standard a,b,c, and closed based on their existing points rating and the the letter grade sign that is the outcome of the inspection must be shown in plain sight.
-
I don't think they give "F"s though. because they simply close the restaurant as they did Cheryl's Establishment Closed by DOHMH. Violations were cited in the following area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed.: http://167.153.150.32/RI/web/detail.do?method=detail&restaurantId=41191438&inspectionDate=20100311 http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2010/pr011-10.shtml

This doesn't relate to the health violations, but I went to Cheryl's for the first time recently, for brunch, and the service was awful. We really wanted to like it. My friend, who had been there before, said that last time she'd been, the service was bad too.
-
Just read the violations... Some of them are common sense that they should have been in control of, others are things that are dificult in NYC. Since points are points, correct the easy ones and hope for the best with the picky ones!

since you bring it up, i feel the same way. i do like the place, and generally like the food and the servers and cheryl herself, but every time we've gone the service has been amiss. last time we went, the wife and i both ordered portobello burgers, which were quite tasty, but arrived with no catsup. when we were eventually able to flag the waiter again, he explained that they were out. of catsup! this at a restaurant that includes on its limited menu no less than four kinds of burgers, and fries. it is also less than a block away from the little grocer at st. john's. someone could have gone and bought a bottle and been back before we'd taken a bite. (we considered doing it ourselves.) but it didn't end there. a little while later, someone else ordered a burger and we heard them ask for catsup. the same waiter then brought catsup to their table! by this time we were almost done so we just fumed, baffled, until the check came. when it did, i asked the waiter about the discrepancy. someone had indeed at some point gone to the store to buy more catsup, he said, but by the time they came back, the waiter had decided we were almost done with our burgers and so didn't mention it to us. i'd have thought that would be our decision. but the whole episode was ludicrous start to finish, and this was just the latest example. there has always been something off. unfortunately, i don't find the list of health code violations all that surprising. i too want to like this place but wish it would get its act together."Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait." -

Their double thick pork chop is yummy. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -

I've eaten@Cheryl's and have always found the food really good and the place to be clean. I don't know why the health dept would close the place. I really think that the city is...really Bloomberg is trying to generate money for the city by any means cause one of my favs-Franklin Park was also closed by the city... Anyways, I'm still a fan of Cheryl's and think everyone should be too.

Their sake salmon is seriously delish, as is the calamari with the special dipping sauce. Looking forward to eating in the garden soon- so pretty back there."...you can choose the rain....but I choose the sun..." - N. Costa

A portion of Franklin Park was closed because of not having the right permits on file for the new Dutch Boy Burgers addition... which screwed them up on the already open large indoor bar piece. I think they were trying to have one restroom area for two separate C of O's (Dutch Boy and the larger indoor bar piece), or something along those lines. i.e., while I tend to agree with you on Cheryl's, I don't think you can blame FP's permit woes and subsequent temporary closing on Bloomberg's need to rectify empty city coffers. Whether its the architect's fault or the owner's, you shouldn't really d*ck around with building and C of O permits.
If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

Cheryl's was closed by the health dept, for violations that are present in EVERY place in NYC. Franklin Park was closed by the idiots at the NYCDOB because they simply don't know what they are doing. The city is desperate for tax revenue and have closed half a dozen sources just in the area of PH/CH(?). Remember that the unqualified NYCDOB persons may have made our quest for burgers and beer in a safe establishment look like a trek to the north pole in flip flops, he or she is also inspecting your kids school for safety and health issues that can kill your kids rather than your buzz. Lead paint, asbestos, structural hazards, fire and safety issues are handled by the same clowns that approved a new burger place only to tell a guy who had everything stamped and approved that he had to start over. The city claims its new letter grade system will be better for patrons at cafes and bars, A- means spotless and if you get a D your closed until things are fixed. Maybe they should apply the same system to the bumbling inspectors at the DOB,or just hit the do over button. Long live lamb burgers..the kind you don't risk your life for.
