A bit of a break from the crime threads. I was browsing CL looking for a tv and other things and I saw an help wanted ad for a new pizza place opening here in Prospect Heights. Some competition for Franny's and Amorina, eh? Where do they think they'll put it? I hope on Washington somewhere.
-
I bet it's actually in Crown Heights.
-
Been seeing some work done on this the passed week as it prepares to re-open as "Roscoe's." Owners of Guero's Tacos I believe. Slice of Brooklyn sign is down and looks like some renovations are taking place.
That'll be 3 pizza places between Atlantic and EP. Roscoe's, upscale Barboncino, and there was word another pizza place was moving into the vacant spot near Winot.
-
I heard rumors that the pizza place to be located near Winot will be a Not Ray's Pizza. If true, it would be the latest addition to the chain/franchise.

Still not PH, though.
If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

True.
Here is a picture of the Roscoe's space. It looks like they concluded that the run down look of Slice of Brooklyn had to go.....

It is going to have beer and wine.

The owners sent out this promo photo today; They are practicing making pizza.
They hope to open within the next week

The sign on the door was up when I walked past on Wednesday. Looked very close. More pizza = good!
-
Whynot_31 -- the run down look? What run down look? There was nothing run down about it!
-
Slice of Brooklyn: The slices were stale, and lacked flavor. The chairs and tables were old and beatenup. The sign out front was hand painted. The hours were sporadic. It closed early. Menu items were not always in stock. No beer and wine.
As a result, too many people went elsewhere for their pizza, but Roscoes is on the way. They are betting people will support a nicer place, with better food and service.
....A less upscale place (Rumored to be a Not Rays) will open on Franklin near EP and cater to those looking for lower prices, less aesthetic and service. I predict they will do a better job than Slice of Brooklyn did.

The only thing that was 'wrong' with A Slice of Brooklyn was that there were no Whitefolks working there. Everybody knows that it's the rare White person who patronizes a Black business. And, ask a Black proprietor if they got the hipster working for them because he or she is really deserving of the 'jay Oh bee'. Likely that tattooed dude or dame is there to appease the ever-seeking wannabe beatific personality's need for 'rapproachment'.
A Slice of Brooklyn had great pizza and reasonable prices but the hipsters just weren't going in. Every Black business on the Ave that has suffered the same fate has had the same complaint. Recall Nairobi's Backback?
-
Recall Shane's on Washington?
Cheryl's on Underhill?
Candy shop on Franklin?....those places are thriving due to good food, prices and service. They meet a desire that people are willing and able to pay for.
I believe their owners describe themselves as black, but you'd have to ask them.

From what I have heard, Roscoes will be similar to Amorina on Vanderbilt. ....less upscale than Barbachinos, but more family friendly.
Less of a "take your date" place.

I used to go to A Slice of Brooklyn until I saw chicken salads sitting out in melted ice water in the middle of summer with no AC. I don't care who owns a place, I'm not getting sick for anyone. Before I moved I went to Pasha Pita Pizza, the white pizza with mushrooms and spinach is really good.
Go do something useful. -
Let us not forget Janelle's, a Trinidadia-owned business that attracts people of all races. They now feature live comedy, so you can get a few chuckles with your roti.
-
Whynot makes my point: All of the above businesses -- in MY opinion -- make a point of hiring White people to be in the store for fear that the establishment will be 'too Black' for White patronage... I've had conversations with the owners of SOME of those that he mentioned, and yea, they have told me such is the case.... Recall Bristen's? Dude, and all the other dudes out there, if you are going to tell me that this is not a reality, that Whitefolks don't do this, that Blackfolks don't do this, then, we are not having honest discourse. Are you saying in the entire penumbra of reasons why a business succeeds or fails, race isn't a factor? At any time, in REAL time??? On Franklin Avenue? You mekkin' joke....

I liked Slice of Brooklyn 1/2 the time. Pizza was too hit or miss.
But your theory seems weird in light of Candy Rush, Lily & Fig, Tastebuds, .etc. I go to places with consistent food, hours, and service.
-
I can't say I pay much attention to the hue of those serving me food, but (suffice it to say) I think quitting my job under the expectation that I will "be able to get a job in foodservice on Franklin Ave, loaf, and be immune from unemployment because I am a white dude" to be poorly conceived plan.
Over the the past few years, businesses owned by all sorts of people have opened and closed.
Many closed because they were unable to adapt to the preferences of the changing neighborhood. Others closed because they didn't realize they had to "change their game" in light of increasing competition. Others closed because, no matter how well they ran their business, it was I'll suited to an area as high rent as ours has become.
We recently discussed the changes happening on Nostrand, and I argued that the Carib. bakeries might have to change their offerings in order to survive. When someone prefers a muffin over Carib. item, is it inherently bad or racist? Can't we like different foods?
We don't all have to eat in places that look alike and play the same music, do we?

It is hot outside, so I will yammer on in the comfort of my A/C.
Blaming things on racism (hue-ism?) seems simplistic to me. Isn't is it reasonable to believe that power can stem from a complex array of forces, like money, education, gender, "race" and simple majority?
Is there a level playing field, in which which we all started with the same chances and got the same opportunities? Nope.
But here we are.
And, regardless of how we ended up living in this section of CH, we are not unified in the aspects of it we dislike or like.
Based on who we are and how much we make ("demographics"), businesses guess at what they think will make them a good living. When they are right, the food and services in a given neighborhood changes.
As a result, any neighborhood that has changing demographics will naturally undergo changes of all kinds.

I hope Roscoe's is as good as Amorina's on Vanderbilt.

Whoa, whoa, has everybody forgotten about Cataldo's on Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean and Bergen? They make not only great personal pies (What a selection!), but also offer a full old-country, family-style dining experience. A terrific value for the money.

Cataldo's is good, but I put them in the same league as Barbachinos.
I think Roscoe's is aiming a little lower, for the Amorina level.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
I would not in any way put Cataldo's in the same league as Barboncino! It's good pizza in a nice-enough environment. Barboncino is best-in-the-city-league pizza in a very nice, if gentrification-cliche, space.
Amorina, which I love, is good and inventive pizza in a friendly environment. I pick Amorina when I just want a good meal, Barboncino when I want an experience, and Cataldo's when I want old-school.
The one that is totally getting forgotten isn't Cataldo's, but the Brooklyn Pizza place across Vanderbilt from Amorina. Which is apt, as I always forget they are even there!
-
Brooklyn Pizza is a simple slice place; they do not have beer and wine or table service.
...we have also forgotten to mention the fusion pizza place; Pete Zaaz. They are something between slice and sit down.
In rank order of least fancy to fancy, I submit the following for your review:
-1. Gino's nasty pizza on Washington
1. Antonios on Flatbush
2. Pizza Pasha (sp?) on Classon
3. The pizza place on Bedford, near MEC
4. Brooklyn Pizza on Vanderbilt
5. soon to be Not Rays on Franklin
6. Pete Zaaz on Classon
7. Amorina on Vanderbilt
8. soon to be Roscoes on Franklin
9. Cataldo's on Vanderbilt
10. Barbachino on Franklin
11. Basil ...the expensive kosher place on Kingston. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Roscoe's had its grand opening today!
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Went to Roscoe's
They are using the very same ovens that were there when the place was called 'A Slice of Brooklyn'. I say this because they look the same, and they are definitely in the same place. Bought a large pie; it was 18 bucks. There isn't enough cheese on the pizza. There is a thin cheese base, and then there is a slight reckoning of tomato sauce, and then there is some sort of dusting of cheese on top. The pizza dough is soft -- which I enjoyed, but the dough itself seemed flavorless.
It was awfully hot in there. They need either a few well placed fans or an AC. All in all, 'A Slice of Brooklyn' was better.
-
It is certain not an 8 on my above scale. I'd put it somewhere around 4.

I've heard not good things from friends as well. I'll try them this week myself.
Also, Nice pizza is really good. Whynot's list seemed to be Crown Heights and Prospect Heights, but I'll include Nice which is either Clinton Hill or Bed Stuy. Either way, good pizza...but of the small pie variety like Amorino or Barbacino -
My dog and I rarely cross Atlantic Avenue, so we are not fluent re: the pizza over there.

xlizellx, thanks for the recommendation to Nice Pizza (which I'd wrongly assumed was "nice" like the adjective, not "Nice" like the city in France). I was in Bed Stuy yesterday and needed a takeout pie for a couple of friends. The margharita hit the spot. Will definitely go back and try some of the yummy sounding toppings. FYI if anyone else wants to check them out, they're cash only unless you order thru Seamless/GrubHub.
