i definitely heard what appeared to be gunshots, but i dismissed them as belated firecrackers since there seemed to be so many in a row... but now a copter is swarming. anyone know what happened? sounds like something big went downmy beat is correct.
-
Lots of police cars and ambulances on Washington between Sterling and St. Johns... Not sure what happened though.
-
Maybe the St. Johns Place block party got out of hand. It seems to be hovering over that block. I didn't hear any gunshots but all my windows are closed and my music is turned up because my annoying neighbor was listening to Purple Rain AGAIN (for like the 200th time in the last month).
-
I counted eight shots. Sounded like St. Johns and Under/Wash
-
yeah. def. hear the helicopter. just was walking home and saw three cop cars wiz by on park twds washington.i'm a traitor from queens
-
Yes, there are tons of cops, many ambulances and that chopper is getting annoying. Tons of people on the street. I'm on Washington between Sterling and Park. I didn't hear anything that sounded like guns, was it a shooting? Didn't we just have one here last January?
-
Cops and ambulances were mostly concentrated on the Washington / Sterling corner. Helicopter seems to be circling from Classon to Underhill between Sterling and St. Johns.
-
I saw one dead man in the middle of washington ave behind a taxi. the police blocked the sidewalk after that.
-
that's right -- 8 shots, a taxi cab sitting in front of tom's restaurant on washington, and i saw a person (cab driver?) being lifted into an ambulance. there is a rumor that three people were shot (presumably passengers), something about a robbery, but no one knows. things are starting to calm."We are all the President's men."
-
Yeah. I'll back that up. Was at the bodega and heard the news. Somebody got shot.
-
yea, i definitely heard those 8. loud and clear...shit. sucks when things like this go down... terrible that people have been hurt/killed. that helicopters been circling for a good 30minutes now.my beat is correct.
-
makes me wonder if it had anything to do with today's block party on St. Johns... (not that BBQ causes people to shoot people, just that it causes enemies to see each other)For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
Yes, Washington is still shut down between Sterling and St. Johns. Cops told me it was a shooting.
-
Bummer. All around.Have character, don't be a character.
-
Someone was still sitting in the cab (driver's seat) when the guy was laying out on the street (presumably deceased). There were ambulances around, and no one was working on the guy on the ground. Multiple victims? So unfortunate.
-
Subject: Person shot not dead...
Yet. I saw them clearly from my window they loss some blood, but 30 min later when the paramedics arrive they attempted to treat him/her. If he/she was dead the wouldn't have started CPR. -
any way to get official information on something like this?
-
Well the Taxi # is 7828, the shooting happened in the 77th precinct. The first officer on the scene is still at the scene an asian woman. She is a uniformed officer, but was present for most of what happened.
-
The police were discussing blocking off the street when I walked by. No one was attempting to perform CPR on the man behind the taxi. You would think cops would be trained to perform CPR. Unless the paramedics from the two ambulances were busy working on someone else, the man behind the taxi was being severely neglected.
-
CPR wasn't performed until the paramedics arrived nearly 30-40 min after the shooting. You are correct no one attempted to do anything to the person lying in the street other then stare at him/her.

rednaxela » any way to get official information on something like this?
gothamist presently reports it as a shooting http://gothamist.com/map/ ...if the victims die, they'll update it.For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Gothamist Maps lists nothing on Washington Avenue in Brooklyn.

Wow, I thought the shots were on St.J's directly. I left a monitor on in the kids room to go upstairs to a neighbors house and had to bolt when I heard the shots. Jesus, it sounded like the shots were in the apt! F'ing crazy. We are in the back of a building on St.J's, it faces out to Butler and Underhill. I guess sound can jump buildings and what-not. Dang!Loving PH since '98!
-
i just read the MYFOXNY.COM report. it doesn't make sense -- the shooting was washington at sterling (right in front of tom's) and it was a taxi cab, not a chevy caprice. i am wondering: were there separate shootings yesterday? jesus..."We are all the President's men."

Remember how you were once involved in something first hand that made the news (big storm, murder, building collapse, business failure, etc) and they got a lot of the details wrong? ...they report just about every other story the same way.For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

CBS and NBC out on Washington and St.J's interviewing people now. Guess this will make the news after all!Loving PH since '98! -

I too think there were two sets of shots, first 7 or eight behind between st johns and sterling, very loud, which I called in because it sounded like shots back and forth, not your typical fireworks. Apparently a little bit later the shots at sterling/washington. Was called back by detective at 2:30am for phone interview. He was mostly interested in my suspicions of crips/bloods from elsewhere (large group of 'kids', all dressed in blue, walking with a swagger) seen earlier that night, and motorcycle 'group' around 9:15pm at stj/washy. He told me two were killed, one injured. Note: block party and DJ shottakid vs DJ Lance (explaining the silly competing sound systems) was announced in flyers elsewhere in BK, see http://www.myspace.com/GETMADLADIES

except it was a minivan cab, so SterlingGuy's confusion is understandable. -
yeah, thank you sayra72 -- it was a minivan cab. but thank you for the visual."We are all the President's men."

Very scary - we were on Washington Avenue at a restaurant and it was sheer chaos. We walked through the block party earlier that night and were surprised that we didn't see one police officer. This was a large crowd - the biggest we've seen in years - and there didn't seem to be anyone in charge. The cops were totally caught off guard (or so it appeared to us). After the gunshots, it was frightening to say the least. We're curious: why did the copter buzz the neighborhood for over an hour?
-
...the crowd was likely left over from the block party that occured all day on St Johns btwn Underhill and Washington. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
wasn't someone shot or killed on classon and st. john's recently, too? there's one of those camera towers at the corner. i know it's not technically PH but for those of us who live on washington it's on our way home from the train.

I walked by that block party earlier in the day and that sound system looked out of control. Sorry to hear that the party escalated and ended in this way. This is certainly going to perpetuate some stereotypes.
-
One wonders if this will be the last block party Mike Jones has on St Johns Pl for some time.
Why attack God? He may be as miserable as we are.

GOD » One wonders if this will be the last block party Mike Jones has on St Johns Pl for some time.
Should be the last, but I expect it won't be.
-
It was just on Fox news (am too tired to wait until 11!). They showed the Caprice - it was blue. Said shooters took off on motorcycles.
-
I hope we never have another block party again! It should be BANNED!!! Funny how the police are NOW patrolling the neighborhood. Too little, too late!
-
Its an election year

I was possibly the annoying purple rain neighbor, ha!The best of men aren't at their "best" at all times.

Subject: Block Party security?
Why wasn't security provided at an event of this size? What was the city thinking when they issued a permit without providing some kind of police presence or why didn't they require the organizers to do so??? How tragic and disheartening. I think we should all write or call Letitia James and try to make sure this doesn't happen again. And FYI, guys on motorcycles peeled out with their tires to burn marks in the road somewhere near St Johns and Washington late last night. -

They had a permit? -
Subject: Get involved
I agree, why was an event this large allowed without a security/police presence. Regardless, if you want to write a letter or get involved to try and prevent further issues, I think it is best to involve the local politicos. Specifically Eric Adams because: 1. His Chief of Staff, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, is a no bull kinda woman and will get things done. 2. He is former law enforcement. 3. After all that has been happening in the State Senate, they owe us a favor
Here is Eric's info:
572 Flatbush Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11225
Phone: (718) 284-4700
Fax: (718) 282-3585
Also, should reach out to Hakeem. -
Not sure if they had a permit, but if they didnt, the responsible party should be found and held accountable. They did have "No Parking Saturday" signs that claimed to be put up by the police, but I think thats highly unlikely. I'm all for community around here, but not at the cost of life or limb.

gothamist is reporting it now too: http://gothamist.com/2009/07/20/prospect_heights_double_murder_two.phpyou're welcome to stay, but even your company must compliment the feng-shui.
-
Even if they did have a permit there should be SOME police presence for a gathering of that size.
