Hi, I decided to share this just in case something similar happens to you -hopefully not. My dog ate a very powerful rat poison yesterday...he almost died. We immediately took him to the vet and he said that what actually saved his life was the fact that wed made him vomit right away by giving him hydrogen peroxide (1 tbl spoon per 10 lbs). It was also very helpful that we took a pic of the vomit and showed it to the vet, and we also found out the ingredients of the poison so the vet knew how to proceed.
My beautiful Golden Retriever is doing good know, but he could have died...
If this unfortunate incident ever happens to your dog, please try to make him vomit asap (and take him/her to the vet), this can actually save his life!

Sorry for the typos, I was typing too fast! oops!

What did the vomit look like?

It would also be useful to know what kind/type of rat poison it was (not Warfarin?), what the package, container, etc. looked like and where your dog found it. There are strict regulations governing rodenticides, & this one sound quite scarey.

You did a great job and your quick thinking is the reason he is well today.
its good to know that hydrogen peroxide (1tbl spoon per 10 lbs) can induce vomiting in dogs. -
OQ, the vomit was all green.
Thx, landlord, I'm so happy he is ok
Salix, I knew what the poison was (an anticoagulant, I just don't remember the name right now). The exterminator came to my place and left a bucket unattended on the floor of one room while he was working on another room. He never told me there was spare bags of poison inside the bucket, no warning at all, and I couldn't tell because his jacket was covering the bucket.
I have to say that the exterminator was very cooperative, genuinely worried and checked on my dog several times. He called the manufacturer to know the composition of the bag (paper) and gave me some advice on the treatment (vitamin K1, which is what the vet recommended as well). He also paid for the vet expenses. I think they will be more careful next time, and I will as well. -
Wow--I was wondering the source and that's a really scary one (large amounts of it). I'm glad your pup is okay. That must have been a really horrible day/night.

Glad all ended well. Kudos to the exterminator for doing the right thing. These cases all seem to end up in front of Judge Judy.

Thanks, guys!! BTW, I just looked up the info of the poison. It was "First Strike Soft Bait" and the ingredient is "Defethialone". It is great for what is intended, but terrible if it ends up in your pooch's stomach.
