Hey I've lived in PH for 6 years. I haven't found a decent fish market yet...pathmart has ok selection, but i HATE shopping there. so anyway i just moved a few blocks to park place... and i noticed there is an awning next to caree cleaners that says - fresh fish market. I've never see the place open... is it closed or what? Any places nearby to get decent fresh fish?

They have odd and inconvenient hours. When I decide I want to buy fish, it's closed more often than not. I have had no problems with the selection or quality there, but I'm not picky at all. How about the fish store at Natural Land on Flatbush (between Park and Sterling)? I know it is technically Park Slope but... :roll:I've been happy so far with selection and freshness.

The best and freshest fish available is at the farmer's market at GAP on saturday. I used to buy my fish regularly in chinatown but the hygiene level at those places is beyond creepy. The store on vanderbilt is ok in a pinch but they do have strange hours...fortunately I can look out my window and see if they're open.

I could not agree more about the fish vendor at the GAP green market. The fish is absolutely top notch, and cheaper than the supermarket to boot. You have to get there early for the best selection. For the best deal, get the whole fish, most of which are around $3-$4 per pound. I only wish it was there more than once a week! I say this as a 9 out of 10 on the Chowhound Uber Alles scale.

Angel's Fish Market on Venderbilt is not bad. Not a huge selection but they are nice and pretty inexpensive. If you need something and they do not have it they will bring it from their market on Fifth Ave and call you when it arrives. -
Natural Land on Flatbush is good, always fresh and friendly, and they always tuck in a few lemons for free. But stay away from their pre-made sushi in the refrigerator. I had a bad experience with that once.

I once got violentlyl ill from some shark meat bought from the GAP fish market. Not a pleasant experience. On the other hand, the premade sushi at Natural Land has been my dinner dozens, if not hundreds of times, perhaps I've just been lucky?

Oh yes, Mr. Carnivore. My dining friend found himself projectile vomiting out of the window of a moving van on the Williamsburg Bridge, while driving.

Sorry to hear that. I still think that was a rare outlier to the usual GAP fish experience. I got some scallops from there on Saturday, and they were some of the best I've ever eaten.

anyone been to fish tales? i think it is in carroll gardens. someone told me this is one of the best fish markets in brooklyn -- but not close by.

sje - I guess maybe sometimes you just get some bad fish, and probably not the norm for most good places. Overall, Natural Land seems really good. I can't drink anything on tap at Soda, either, without getting deathly ill, so maybe I just have a delicate stomach!

I'm not saying bad fish is the norm at GAP. It happens everywhere occasionally, I think.

My partner went to the new fish market on St. Johns and Franklin - he said it was fine - they don't have a huge variety but the fish seemed fairly fresh. I get oysters from the Farmer's Market. Cheap and YUM! -
