At least some of the commenters have the right idea about hipsters. Although scum is scum no matter where or when you were born. There are plenty of ghetto natives that are much worse than out of state hipsters.
I'm all for community gardens, I have a tiny garden in my backyard, but I also don't walk around in a daze pretending I live in an amazing urban utopia that belongs only to me and those who are exactly like me. Hipsters and Hoodrats are exactly the same, the rest of us are caught in the middle.

Cheese whiz! Those posters on that site sound like a lot of ignorant pucks. I'd take a bus load of do gooder "hipsters" gardening on land owned by The Public Trust for Land over any one of them any day. People who don't create anything of beauty are resentful of anyone who does And its a lot easier to destroy than to create, almost stupidly so. I've been to that garden to buy plants and its lovely. Too bad for the gardeners. There has got to be something that can be done.

that garden has been around a long time; hipsters don't enter into it. as for claiming not to know it is there...um, BULLSHIT.
fyi, community gardens -- besides just being nice things to have around -- raise surrounding property values. whether you're interested in gardening or not (and these gardens are required to have open hours for the public and extremely low barriers to membership), property owners should be happy to have them around.

What % of Property in Prospect Heights is owned by people who live in Prospect Heights?
If (dunno?) a majority of those who live in prospect heights are renters why would it be in the best interest of the community for property values to go up?

Property values go up because people will pay more to not live in a shit hole.
Renters are usually willing to pay a little more to not live in a shit hole. If they don't want to pay a little more, there are plenty of shit holes to be found elsewhere in NYC.
...not that there's anything wrong with that. -
Community Gardens are awesome - but Real Estate as an "investment" is not. If you want to make money on real assets consider investing in Precious Metals.
-
do metals allow you to write off all the interest( @100% of the payment for 3 and qrt years) for almost 7 years? And allow you a host of other deductions through the US tax policy? For a person making less than 75k a year and needs a primary residence real estate is still pretty good compared w metals

People who own houses can also pay off the purchase price by renting it out to someone else.
If I tried to rent out my gold wedding ring, I'm pretty certain Mrs. Whynot would get upset.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
There is certainly money to be made in real estate I can't argue with that. But seems to me we've overextended ourselves as a society a bit with these mortgages.
Work all day and give our money to the bank (for "safekeeping") and then these guys invent money out of thin air based on your deposit---and create mortgage can't possibly be paid off by someone of middle class means.Let's beautify the neighborhood which would in turn attract more people/ prospective residents with a similar disposition. But I just have a hard time stomaching profiteering off of someone place of residence--
but hey--- that's me.

Returning to the garden:
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
It looks like part of the issue was the guy was building a wall to fence his property off from the garden. Wonder why he felt this was necessary after all this time? It also seems clear, given the most recent picture that the plantings went all the way up to the lot line. Seems that good fences do not make good neighbors from the garden's perspective...

Valerie also sounds like a real piece of work.
HISTORY:
The St. Marks Avenue/Prospect Heights Community Garden was founded in 1975 by The St. Marks Avenue Block Association fed up by New York City’s total neglect of the lot at 207 St. Marks where a house had burned down in the 1960s. The city left it unfenced and by 1975, the lot was a rubbish dump, eyesore, rat colony. The Hansfords and neighbors cleared out and took over lot and eyesore in 1975. The neighbors carted out tons of trash and began to garden vegetables in raised beds and flowers in front. The garden is completely organic, no poisons allowed. A 3-bin compost system is in operation .Because the garden is organic, it has become a sanctuary for many different types of butterflies and praying mantis. Neighbors often donate plants and we send visitors home with flowers and a bouquet of herb

Is this the community garden that kicked out the 2 feral cats living there because they didn't want them pooping in their soil?
Go do something useful.
