I was walking down Washington Ave and noticed there is a "coming soon" banner up for a Indian restaurant. The place is between Dean and Pacific; basically across the street from Ortine (on the Crown Heights side, I know). I peeked in and it looks like its got a bit of work to go yet, but we'll see. Hope it will be good.
-
i think that coming soon banner has been there for months.
-
First time I had noticed the banner. Nonetheless, there were guys in there working pretty hard.
-
It had been a "COMING SOON" juice bar for almost a year, and now they're getting somewhere with the new Indian Restaurant direction. So, it's on. I still like India Place on Vanderbilt a lot though.
-
bombay masala on franklin is way better than india place and most other indian i've had in this section of brooklyn. you can actually taste the veggies - they aren't just mush. i think they have outdoor seating but so far i've only had delivered
-
There are no good Indian restaurants in Brooklyn. I hope this will be an exception, but I'm not optimistic.
-
@carnivore There are no good Indian restaurants in Brooklyn Sad. But true. The best of the OKs are Joy on Flatbush and Bombay Masala on Franklin.

Carnivore » There are no good Indian restaurants in Brooklyn. I hope this will be an exception, but I'm not optimistic.
Yeah, what's up with that? I feel like I can get better curry from the two-bit takeout counter on 29th Street than I can from most of the Indian places near here. Joy is pretty good, though. There's a total dive of a take-away place in Manhattan in an alleyway between Broadway and Crosby, just south of Houston. It's about as wide as a doorway. If you happen upon it one day, stop in. Food's good. I feel like there should be a good Indian place or two in Flatbush. -
if it's the same place i'm thinking of, it's on crosby, between houston and prince. it's called lahore and is pakistani. all the taxi drivers go there. quite good -- for a refrigerator to microwave kind of takeout joint -- and cheap. anyway, we digress. would be great to have a place of that caliber here."Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait."

It's got to be the same place. I mean, that place is a hole and the food is easily better than what the Indian restaurants here are pulling off. It's one food area where Brooklyn has yet to impress me. Besides Jackson Heights (which I haven't sufficiently explored) where else is the Indian food good? New Jersey? -
Joy is not the best Indian food ever, but it's pretty solid in my opinion. The lack of event halfway decent Chinese restaurants around here is a more serious (and more puzzling) problem than the lack of superlative Indian food.

The Chinese food issue is an extremely local problem. You can get superb Chinese food within the confines of Brooklyn with a short trip to Sunset Park. But I'm not aware of any good Indian anywhere in the borough. I used to think Joy was ok a few years ago, but then they went way downhill. I haven't been back in over a year. Have they gotten better again? -
Joy is good, but certainly not a destination. Little India in Manhattan (Lex and 26th) is a destination. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

But then, I do usually order the same few Indian staples (chicken tikka masaala, chicken madras, saag paneer, mattar paneer, etc.). It's true that there's good Chinese food in other parts of Brooklyn. But I would kill for a decent delivery option around here--it's just odd to me that the local Chinese place five minutes from where I grew up in the Boston suburbs is much better than anything in the Park Slope area. -
Using Grub Hub might expand food options in PH. http://www.grubhub.com/

>>I have been ordering from Joy for five years, and have never noticed any dip in quality. I agree. Terrible five years ago and still just as terrible now.

In regards to Indian --- Bombay Massala on Franklin is great We usually do take-out, but when you eat in, you can sit in the back garden (nice!), get all-you-can-eat roti and rice (rather than paying for roti with take-out), and they usually give a complimentary dessert or pudding at the end of the meal. They are really friendly when you eat-in too. Also, it's BYOB, which is nice since one of my favorite wine shops/bodegas for beer is on that block too. In regard to Chinese -- They aren't GREAT, but the new-ish Jay's Wong Chinese on Franklin at Park is much better than most in the area. FRESH veggies were chopped and cooked for my order and it wasn't overly oily or sauce-y. It was still take-out chinese-y, but it was much more fresh and better than any I've had in the area.

I enjoy the food at Joy. Anybody can trash any restaurant they deem inferior. All a matter of opinion.

Totally agree with both of these reviews. I was very surprised by the quality of the food at J's. They're now my stand by for when I'm too lazy to steam my own veggies and make brown rice. -
>>I enjoy the food at Joy. Anybody can trash any restaurant they deem inferior. All a matter of opinion. Not sure I understand what you are getting at. Are we not supposed to post negative opinions of restaurants? I'm a huge fan of Indian and Asian cooking. I think Joy and the place on Flatbush are both bad. Like most Chinese and Thai places in our area, they serve a fast-food version of their culture's cuisine. To me, it tastes greasy, leaden, overly sweat, and under-spiced. The vegetables do not seem particularly fresh. Chicken is usually very dry. I wish it were better.

Joy is super good. And if you consider the price I bet you can count on one hand the number of better Indian spots in all of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I aint even gonna act like I know whatsup in Queens, but the best spots gotta be up there.

There are more places than that that are better than Joy (even including the price) on the one block of Lexington between 27th and 28th alone. And Queens has much better. -

I think Kinara's in Ft. Greene is good, If you can talk them into delivering all the way to ph. actually even if you can't, i still think they're good.

Bombay Masala is good. Best Indian food i've had is Roti Boti in Queens.

The aforementioned Sapid is open. I stopped by and grabbed a menu.

Thanks for the review, whynot. Based on your post, I'm going to give this place a try.

doublediamond » There is no Indian community here in Brooklyn, correct? That's the crux of the problem. Both Lexington and Jackson Heights serve the community.
True. But there is a large Bangladeshi community in Brooklyn. The guys who run Bombay Masala are actually Bangladeshi. I think the food is pretty good. My only complaint is that they serve watery, British-style tea instead of chai. Otherwise though they do a great job impersonating an Indian restaurant with the Bollywood videos running and the pictures of the Taj Mahal all over the place.Very un- "sivilized". -
We went there tonight--same basic experience as detailed by whynot above, with the exception that the television was showing Being Human on BBC America. The pakoras were amazing. Everything was really good. Hard to compare it to Bombay Masala or Joy (it certainly is up there with them, but we tried different dishes at each), but these folks know how to cook. I hope it makes it.
-
I ordered delivery from Sapid tonight--a simple dinner of plain naan, papadum, and chicken tikka masala. I definitely give it the thumbs up. It was about equally good as Joy, but quite different. (I know some others on this board don't like Joy and will see that as a negative, not an endorsement. Oh well.)
-
Repeat customers. Food was every bit as good as last time--I think they're better than Joy and Bombay Masala by about half a nose. 20% discount for those eating dinner in. We were still the only ones there for much of the time. We really want this place to make it. Give it some love.
-
Went there recently and had a very good dinner. We ate in and were the only couple there through out most of our meal, but had a very pleasant time. 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, a tea, a soda and an order of naan all came out to less than $25 when they took off the 20% off (before tip, but after tax). And on top of that they gave us desserts on the house. Really hope this place makes it. So far, they definitely get my seal of approval.
-
I ordered from them again and was even more impressed than the first time. This place is seriously good.
-
I'll be going to India again (4th time) in October, so I have to try this sometime before then. If I tried it after I got back, I don't think it would really be a fair review. I'll report back soon, hopefully sometime this week.
-
They are a very good place. My girlfriend and I went tonight around 10, knowing they were closing at 11. We grabbed a bottle of wine at the corner of Bergen and Washington and went in for a quick dinner. The service was great, and even though we were the only dine in customers it wasn't awkward (right now they are offering 20% off dine in). The food was delicious, we had samosas, a cauliflower dish and an okra dish (vegetarian). They insisted that we stay and finish our meal, but the portions were large and we didn't want to stay too far past closing. They are definitely worth checking out, very nice people.

Subject: highly recommended
So, I love Indian food (and so does gf), but we rarely eat it, for reasons I cannot explain. We decided to give Sapid a try tonight since we live very close to it, and let me tell you, it was well worth it. The food was incredible. I highly recommend the okra dish, which unfortunately isn't listed on their online menu. I can't say much else besides: please give this place a try if you haven't already! We were the only ones in there and I want this place to live on. We repeatedly told them that we'd be back again, and it ain't no lie. The helpings are plentiful and so we took leftovers home. I can't wait to digest and have more! -
