there's also a cute, round sign that sticks out, but it kept swinging in the wind, defying the treo camera.
in any case, I anticipate something yummy or a short life.

oh boy! I hope they also have an area to eat in and do desserts by the slice. My BF (who has such a sweet tooth he often eats peanut butter cups for breakfast) is always bemoaning the lack of a place to get a nice slice of pie or piece of cake after, say, dinner at Geido (if its chocolate we want, we make a beeline for the chocolate room, but sometimes we want something other than chocolate!)
-
Have they opened yet? Anyone know what their hours are? Oh the possibilities... baked goods for breakfast on the way to work... baked goods as after-work snack... baked goods stumbling home from Soda... so bad, but so GOOD...

So it looks like their hours will be 7-7 on weekdays. I'm not sure about the yellow-frosting-only policy, though...

I think I'm gonna open a milk stand next to this place
Skim, 1%, 2%, whole, organic, soy, rice, almond... no nutmilk though......not that there's anything wrong with that. -

In answer to alafairnadia's question, yes, Delicacies does carry bread, mostly baguetts of various types. I'm not sure exactly where it's from, but it's pretty damn good. Get there early, especially on Saturdays.
-
So they may not be planning on bread, but here's what Joyce wrote back to me when I wrote to her to tell her I was looking forward to the opening:
We're working hard to wade through our inspections in order to bring the bakeshop to Prospect Heights by late-June. In addition to our pastries, we're also going to serve Gorilla coffee and SerendipiTea teas. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Mmmmm. Gorilla coffee. This place is going to be good. -
Alafairnadia, Can you tell us more about Half possibly re-opening? I hope that's true, because I miss that place. I've been craving a toastie and a good glass of wine.

I just heard that they took delivery of a bunch of beer from Brooklyn breweries. that's all I know. but a place that's closed down doesn't usually take a wholesale beer delivery. that's ALL I know.like a smoked meat with an earthy youth overnote -
pulsivism » Gorilla coffee??? Thank God! Now I don't have to walk 3 long blocks for my crack coffee fix! I only have to walk one short block! drive muddy waters out!
I'm wondering to what extent they'll serve Gorilla... just drip or espresso, too? I suspect the former, 'cause I think the latter would... well, let's put it this way - it would become more of a coffee shop and less of a bakery, and that doesn't look like what they're about......not that there's anything wrong with that. -
putz » i'm disappointed with joyce's - would take a fresh baguette over a $2.50 cupcake any day.
I was hoping for baguettes too. I bet the profit margin's a lot better on a $2.50 cupcake than on a baguette!

Joyce must be pretty close to opening. Look at this from craigslist:

A little update from Joyce Bakeshop, they are trying to open on Monday!! If only Con-Ed would speed this process along by actually giving them some gas....

I was all excited for a cupcake tomorrow--Aug 28--but now the website says "doors swing open August 30". Soon, soon.

The place really looks great. Nice balance - comfy, not too cluttered, not too sparse. Counters and display cases get a thumbs up, as does the view in to the kitchen area. Selection was a little thin, but it's the first day. Nice mix though - from work-a-day (chocolate chip cookies), upscale (fresh raspberry torte of some kind) and stuff in between (cherry brownies). My red velvet cupcake - great. Love the frosting, light and not-too-sweet cream cheese. Chocolate chip (chunk?) cookie was good, too - hearty and best enjoyed with milk, but not so dry as to make it necessary - not the crunchy, brittle type. Would have liked to try an espresso, but I had to be on my way - maybe around lunchtime.

Ok so I went and I've returned. Good things, good things. Let me start by admitting that I'm a bit of a nervous consumer, and generally when I go into someplace for the first time and the people behind the counter are staring at me waiting for me to order, I panic and just point at random things that seem safe for fear of seeming like I've never been there before. I realize that this is a particularly hilarious thing to do on the first day the place is open, but, well, it's what I did. I ended up nervously opting for an Iced Vanilla Latte and what was called a "regular muffin," even though there were way more interesting and exciting looking things behind the counter, but I wasn't entirely sure what those were and I didn't want to, god forbid, ask the staff to clarify. Anyway, it turns out that "regular" means "corn" at Joyce, which is cool with me. The muffin ($2) was larger than it looked and definitely delicious. It was nice and moist in terms of corn muffins, but that's still a tiny bit dry. I really could have used some butter or jelly or both atop it, but, again, I'm too much of a f#cking mary to just ask the people who work at the bake shop if that's something they do. Still, the corn muffin was really good - very tasty. The latte ($3.25) was similarly delicious - well proportioned, just sweet enough, tasty espresso, everything. Plus it's about a dollar cheaper than a similarly sized vanilla latte from Muddy Waters. Indeed, though I have had nothing but pleasant experiences at the controversial MW, I fear that Joyce will either run it out or, ideally, inspire a cross-Vanderbilt pricing war. Joyce was really nice inside and they managed to put a lot of seating in there without making it look or feel cramped at all. Plus, it was swarming with young women. Obviously that doesn't matter to me - I have enough trouble ordering a tart in a bakery, no way I'm going to try to pick one up."He said, 'Oh, I should have known that you would go and do some bogus s*** up in my house...'" Subject: Great potential
I am the luckiest bastard ever. I volunteered at work yesterday to pick up pastry for a colleague's birthday today. I thought to myself, "Well, this is gonna be a wild goose chase – unless, by some miracle, that Joyce place is finally open." Walking home from the subway yesterday, I saw lights on in Joyce's back room, with worker bees fluttering around near the ovens. No...it couldn't actually be happening.... But it was! On the very day I needed it! I showed up at a few minutes after 10 (I always straggle into work late) and bought what I think were their first for-sale cupcakes ever. I was not, however, their first customer by a long shot, as the place had been open since 7, and there were already three or four coffee drinkers manning the tables. The cupcakes were a big hit at work. I bought five red velvet with cream cheese frosting and four angel food with chocolate frosting. The cupcakes were tasty – not Magnolia, "kill me now" amazing, but more than adequate. And you can't beat the location. I would like to see them come up with a pricing incentive for buying a box; the cupcakes were $2 each, which made my full box of nine cupcakes...well, $18. But since I was buying a large chunk of their initial cupcake stock – I think they only had, like, 20 out in total – I can understand them making me pay full markup. I was so thrilled to have my problem solved that I didn't mind. If they add fresh-baked bread, cookies, and a larger breakfast and lunch selection, I agree with everyone here that Muddy Waters is toast.__

The coffee, yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting, and red velvet cupcake were all deelish, the atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly... This is what we've needed around here for a long time. I plan to be there a lot. The other coffee places around here will be dead in the (muddy) water.
