why don't you just stop going there? -

And where do you go? Where do you feel is the 'cool' place for you? EVERYBODY has something that they're willing to pay a little more for, if they feel that it's a better-quality experience. So Joyce isn't your cup of coffee. Don't be bitter, just realize that your 'cup of coffee' isn't so desirable to others, either. I thought that you were against 'group-think' practices, yet you continually sneer at people with priorities different than your own....not that there's anything wrong with that. -
Huh? Paying lots of money to buy tiny pastries so you can hang out at the "cool" new coffee shop is like the epitome of being a group thinker. Also, I stopped going there a couple of weeks ago.their world is entirely different from ours, a whole different set of rules apply, fierce, natural, savage -- it's the only way they can survive in their world.

Are you the sole patron of the establishments that you frequent? If not, by your logic, doesn't that make you guilty of group-think, as well? And though they be tiny, the pastries provide a more enjoyable experience than many of the alternatives in the area, which is obvious from the number of people that frequent the place. How they're more enjoyable seems to be your debate. If the majority of the posters on this thread had stated that they didn't think that the pastries were great, but that they liked the place anyway, then yeah, it's probably all a bunch of hype (groupthink?) that'll eventually die down. As it is, though, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive about the quality of the food... so, again, it's not your cuppa tea, so what? That doesn't make everybody else guilty of being sheep. Go do your thang, player, and leave others to theirs....not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't look at it as the "cool" new coffee shop as much as I look at it as a new, independently-owned business. I would way, WAY rather spend a couple bucks more to support a local business that makes a higher-quality product and provides a nicer atmosphere than give more money to a big stinkin' conglomerate like Dunkin' Starnuts. -

You're succumbing to that most ordinary and American groupthink- that quantity is more important than quality. -
It's a bakery people!!! I shudder to think of a butcher shop opening.

I spend a lot of money on stuff in this city --- like a $4 bag of M & Ms at the NYFF --- but Joyce even gives me sticker shock.

I haven't tasted everything at Joyce and I would like to, but I don't think the sizes justify the prices. I don't have to have supersized food, but I want to feel like i'm getting what I pay for. And with a cupcake that small compared to the less expensive and amazing Magnolia cupcake, I just can't do it and that stops me from enjoying what I believe are very good pastries. One thing that I can thank Joyce for is Gorilla coffee and the incentive to buy frozen croissants for me to bake so that I don't have to pay $2 for a teeny, tiny nibble of a croissant they offer. Even the French don't have croissants that small.I believe in peace, bitch.

Joyce really is quite a ripoff, no matter how "good" there food is. I mean imagine going to Peter Luger, ordering the Porterhouse for two and it is a nugget of meat. P.L is expensive, but what you get also justifies its price. Joyce is a good bakery, but the the size of what they serve is rather eyepopping. What is the justification of overcharging so much? Anybody have an answer for that? Is it the econ notion of supply and demand? People want a bakery on Vanderbilt and they'll pay whatever we want them to to enjoy the privilege of having a homemade muffin or cupcake that is the size of a thumbtack? It is a local business and I think that a local business shouldn't be fucking us out of all the loose change in our pockets. I mean cupcakes at great bakeries in the city don't even cost that much, if they do, they are huge cupcakes, man!The best of men aren't at their "best" at all times.

honestly, the cupcakes I enjoy from Joyce - the red velvet and the carrot cake versions - are about 10x better than any cupcake I've had recently. also, Amy's, which makes a fantastic dark chocolate cupcake (with a great dark chocolate frosting) charges around $4/cupcake and the cupcake is maybe 2 bites bigger than Joyce. some other joints, as I sit here and scan my Seamless Web account, like Mangia and Tossed, charge $4-5 for cupcakes that are mediocre at best (trust me, I've tried them). (as an aside, the best desserts on midtown Seamless Web are the key lime pie at Fresh Basils and the black & white cookie at Essa Bagel. though I'm sometimes suckered into the lemon blueberry tart from Mangia.) so I don't think the prices at Joyce are that out of line. I think the stuff is expensive, yes. but, like other people have said in this thread, I'm happy to pay $2 for a quality, satisfying treat. paying $4 for a lump of sugar in midtown is not satisfying at all. and the quality, satisfying stuff in midtown (way way west - Amy's is on 9th ave) is double the price of Joyce's. for the record, I don't understand why people pay money for Magnolia cupcakes - tastes like Duncan Hines to me. but I'm more than happy to let people wait in line for their cake mix cupcakes - cause I get to go to Joyce whenever I feel like a treat.like a smoked meat with an earthy youth overnote -
Yeah, I don't mind that the cupcakes are small. I mind that they are small and two bucks.their world is entirely different from ours, a whole different set of rules apply, fierce, natural, savage -- it's the only way they can survive in their world.

yeah, joyce is kind of making my favorite cupcake place - babycakes in the LES - look "cheap" in comparison. but babycakes has all organic & vegan cupcakes that are $2.75 but bigger - plus everything in the city is usually more $$$. the problem is for me that i would like a regualr place in brooklyn similar to joyce but a bit less expensive. for example, i only go to babycakes every few months on like dates or something.
