i need to make a copy of a Mul-T-Lock key but they have that "do not copy" thing stamped on them.

Anyone know of a key maker/copier/whatever it is called in NYC who would duplicate this key for me? We want a spare set of keys but our super wasn't being amenable to the idea.

Also I have laryngitis which makes negotiation kind of difficult.

We had it done once before for $30 but I don't remember where....PLEASE help! Thank you.

Anywhere with the machine will probably do it... there's a locksmith on Flatbush near American Apparel... isn't there? With Mul-T Lock on their awning?

Does anyone actually pay attention to the "Do not duplicate" stamp?

SW corner of Flatbush and Prospect:

      All Star Locksmith

      http://www.allstarlocksmith.org

Just had more Mul-T-Lock sets cut there about a month ago.

Note: they apparently charge less if you pay cash.

Another note: I find their website to be completely awesome.

Yes hat has happened to me before awkwardly. I could probably start crying if it helps. So stressful. I will look for that locksmith and report back if it works but if anyone has any other leads please let me know!

I am technically in Crown Heights but am in Prospect Heights enough to pretend I live there.

Do not go to Mayday Hardware on Washington.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Oh wait. I missed the important part.

Guessing you don't have the plastic card (like a credit card) for the lock?

We had ours cut as usual, with the card.

The benefit of Mul-T-Lock is supposed to be in having that card, so you get originals cut every time and since it's a deterrent to unauthorized copies.

Not sure All Star will do that for you. They will probably mention something like "fyi, no respectable locksmith would do that, without the original card."

Especially in the age of the internet (with yelp and sites like this), they probably have to be more careful about people posting that they cut unauthorized keys without the card.

Wonder if the super is the one that has the card. Kind of lame that he wouldn't allow for another set.

      Good luck...

Yeah we don't have the card. I guess my mistake was in saying I wanted a spare set--which seems totally reasonable to me -- but he wouldn't do it.

It isn't anything malicious just in my neurosis to have a full spare set in case of emergency or house guest. Sigh.

Maybe if you offer to pay him, your super will suddenly become more amenable (not that it's right, but just sayin' ...)

I convinced my landlord to give me an extra key, but had to pay $10 for it. Totally worth it to not have the hassle of finding a locksmith who would duplicate it.

Yeah, call a locksmith and ask how much it costs to get another set made ($10 per Mul-T-lock key, maybe?), then throw another $10 or $20 on top of that total and offer it to the landlord or super or whatever.

It may be $40 ($20 for keys, $20 tip), but you need to ask yourself if it is worth $40 just to have it over and done with.

Or have no extra keys at all.

No reputable locksmith will duplicate a multilock unless they know you. And now with the new machines it will be impossible to duplicate without the card. This is for your own safety, so people wont make a bunch of keys and hand them out.

It is not unreasonable, in fact isnt it the law that you get 2 keys . My old management co would charge $15 for a new key. The keys themselves are 7 or 8 dollars to dupe.

I bought copies of mul-t-lock keys about 4 places ago without the card, but my landlord gave me a number (It was a 2 digit number like 23 or 42) and told me which locksmith to go to...It cost ~$15/key...The whole point of Mul-T-Lock is that you can control the number of keys in circulation...I don't think you can get one without making some sort of arrangement with the landlord...

What do you do if you have misplaced your card? Any way to replace it?

Whatever you do don't go to All Star Locksmith on Flatbush. They lie. Will tell you one price and then, when they have your key in their hands, say it's a different, higher price.

Go to Flatbush Hardware another block down - Prospect Heights side of Flatbush Ave, next to Haifa grocery. Just below St. Marks. I am unaffiliated with that business but have been a long-time customer (All Star was more convenient but after they screwed me I started walking the extra block). They are old school, have been here for what seems like forever and I hope are able to continue to be.

Flatbush Hardware is good. I'm starting to like them better than Pintchick.

Miguel Locksmith, 74 4th Ave has made me copies of my building key.
