RIP.... a for rent sign was up in their window yesterday.

I know there was a previous thread on this but I was too lazy to look for it.

I think the opening of Prospect Perk and eventually Heights Coffee put the last nail in the coffin.

I wasn't a big fan of Lorena's so no love lost here... their bagels could have doubled for hockey pucks!

Muk said he liked the coffee there.

I think it had zero character. And one time, the guy behind the counter refused to make a sandwich for me.

I can't remember the situtation exactly, but it was something bizarre and amusing, like: they had bagels, and they had sandwiches, but they wouldn't make the sandwich on a bagel! That could have been under the "previous" management, though.

Oh yeah, almost forgot about this gem:

iowagirl » Just a note about Lorena's...when I was on my way back home from Gorilla (ironically enough) with my son a couple of months ago, we asked to use the bathroom at Lorena's. The two guys behind the counter looked at each other and pointed us to the back, where we found a very dirty bathroom with NO SOAP. While I'm sure that most of us hear our moms' voices in our heads reminding to wash our hands every time, it's not possible if there's no soap. We scrubbed when we got home, but NO SOAP MEANS THE STAFF WEREN'T WASHING THEIR HANDS.

They used to brew Porto Rico coffee with near-perfect consistency. No one else came close to Lorena's quality until Gorilla rolled around IMO.

Zero character... more like negative character. I actually boycotted Lorena's for a about a year when one of the surly guys behind the counter refused to give me a spoon to stir my coffee. There was a box full of spoons and he simply refused to give me one. Yes, I am picky about how I stir my f'ing coffee

As far as food, eh. Hockey puck bagels indeed.

      Lorena's Coffee Shop: DEAD"

Whoa, are we in the future now? Or is something up with the servers?

word in park heights stationers is that Lorena's will reopen under new management. don't take that as gospel.

Big Daddy is down on Fifth, but it has a different, more generic name. And no yellow sign!

I hope Lorena's opens under new management and has their own identity. It seems Heights Coffee has to take ideas from everyone else in the neighborhood instead of having an original idea. I see that guy constantly snooping at every cafe/restaurant in Brooklyn. Park Slope, Ft. Greene, Windsor Terrace. How does one find the time?

Whether you like it or not, it's smart business to "snoop" on your competition. Reinventing the wheel usually ends in failure. Adopting ideas from successful businesses pays off. I plan on opening a business, and you can bet that I'm casing out joints like I'm gonna pull a heist.
...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Let me guess... is it going to be a chicken place?

Someone mentioned Prospect Perk as an alternative, a suggestion I'd like to nip in the bud.

I've been engaged in a casual boycott of the place ever since my sister went in there with her 7-yr-old who was in dire need of a place to pee. Bathrooms are for customers only, she was told as her daughter squirmed. I am a customer, she said. I come here all the time.

She begged. Her daughter wriggled her legs.

Sorry, the manager replied, in a way that made it clear she wasn't.

Now my sister's no longer a customer and neither am I. It may seem like a small thing, but if you've got to go, or have a little kid who needs to, and blocks to go before you get back to your apartment, it's not so trivial.

Public facilities should be for public use. Anyone who is granted a license to serve food or drink, who receives city services to do so, and who profits from our neighborhood, should make their bathrooms public.

I don't know what the law is on that. Judging by the number of "customers only" or "private" or "out of service" signs posted on restaurant bathrooms, public access doesn't seem to be a requirement, at least not one that's enforced.

My recourse is the free market, to take my business elsewhere, and free speech, to urge you to do the same.

Furthermore, they copied their name from a dumb tv show.

There are plenty of other coffee shops around. I haven't been to Heights yet, but I will say that I have never had a problem being allowed to use the facilities at Ollies, whether I'm buying a coffee at the moment or not. And I remember that when I do want a coffee.

Did anyone notice when the place with the plaster statues in the window disappeared? Was it a botanica or something like that??? The neighborhood is losing its character.

It's a health code issue. To get to their bathroom, you need to walk by the preparation area, which is verboten for anyone but employees according to the NYS dept. of health. Call it what you will, but it is the law...

Also, restuarants only need to provide bathrooms if they have seating for more than 14 people (ala sh coffee, ozzies, etc.). That why lots of small places lack them...

(Yeah, I had some guy who took the health code test thingy go over the rules with me. LIke why it's bad to mix clorox with ammonia, to prepare food with your bare hands, etc.)
