I have been in my apartment on Sterling Place between Washington and Classon for 3 months. Since it's been warm, there have been two parties at a house on St John's Place. The music from the backyard is very loud - the bass is vibrating in the back of my apartment on Sterling Place. There is a live DJ and a very legit sound system. I'm writing this message at 1:38am, during the second of these parties. The parties seem to be happening at a house immediately next door to FDNY Engine 280/Ladder 132.

I actually like the music the DJ plays, and the party sounds fun. But this is a neighborhood, and that's not a club on St John's.

      1) Who else is bothered by this?
      2) Other than calling 311, what can we do to prevent this from happening anymore?

    2. I just posted about noise too. I finally went in person to the precinct to complain, and a car was actually sent out. They also told me to complain to the community board which I plan to do.

Are you sure it's the same party? St. John's Place between Washington and Classon next to the firehouse? That party is still jumpin. 2:10am.

Welcome to Crown Heights, where newcomers are expected to be polite to the old timers, but the latter are free to treat the former any way they please.

"If you don't like it... Move! We were here first!"

I'm kidding. That's what was said to me back in 2004 when I complained about a party outside my building. It was 3 am on a Wednesday with cars blaring out heavy beats.

It was very inconsiderate of me to ask if they would turn down their music so I could sleep and go to work.

St John's is known as the "Party Block". The parties have greatly diminished in 7 years

      I see.

I called the 77th Precinct sometime between 2 and 3am. Though I had called 311 earlier, they didn't have this particular party on their list (they had a long list of noise complaints and real policing to do, so I understand).

If you speak up early enough and in great enough numbers during the party to 311 and directly to the precinct, maybe it will work. Also, I'll be at the next precinct community council meeting, Monday July 11 at 7:30, 127 Utica Avenue.

And yes, it was reggae after midnight.

There was one heck of a party happening closer to Rogers on St. Johns last night. The music and yelling finally ended around 5:00am.

It is unfair to assume that the people at the party last night (or at parties like them) are either lazy or uneducated. The issue is that the parties are loud, in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Let's keep it at that and be on top of calling 311, calling our precincts and being involved in community meetings.

Correct, and (if I may so so...): Well stated

...those who go after the law breakers on the basis of "who they believe them to be", denigrate the cause.

Your cause is simply that they are breaking the laws, and that you seek enforcement. If you expect to gain potential allies, you must be able to convince readers that you would want the law enforced against WHOEVER is breaking it.

It's hilarious to me this whole community. My super (who never does any work in my apartment, mind you & who I have also not talked to in years) informed me that the neighbors would be having a block party as soon as they get the permits.

He wanted to know if I would feel welcome. Ummm.. No? Considering my neighbors have attacked me and degraded me on multiple occasions.

Why would I want to hang around people who do not play music I have any desire to listen to..

It is super frustrating living here, paying ridiculous amounts of rent and not being able to have any peace or quiet.

I get the idea that these misguided partyers think that if they are rude and objectionable enough, the middle class will take flight again. They are sadly mistaken. What is likely to happen is that their landlords (for those of them that rent and have not bought) will evict those who are illegally occupying apartments, and increase rents to the legal maximum for the rest (many apartments in the outer boroughs rent for less than the legal maximum). Gradually these people are displaced.

I have noted that in the three years I have lived here, the weekly parties at Elijah Stroud have disappeared and the weekend noise level has dropped. There are still some pretty objectionable people around, like the kid who through a bottle of water at my neighbor last night or the kid who called a bunch of us faggots.

I have also wondered whether some of the anti-social activity is the last gasp of the neighborhood gangs to hold onto power.

The past 2 nights someone on St Marks between Carlton and Vanderbilt (nearer to Vanderbilt) has been blaring a radio ALL NIGHT LONG. It was still on when I left to go to work at 7:45a this morning. I can't figure out where it's coming from and can only hear it in the back of my apartment, not from the street. Has anyone else noticed this? I don't mind so much on the weekends, but I draw the line on a Sunday/weekday night.

      Bohuma-
I once read somewhere that the weekend of July 4th is the most popular weekend to move, and that many annual leases expire on June 30th.

Can we hope that these people have a version of Senioritis?

Senioritis: a phenomena is which high school seniors start breaking all the schools rules because they know that their time left in school is short, and the school has limited reprisals.

As a home-owning, first-generation Caribbean-American who was born and raised in Crown Heights, I couldn’t stay quiet on this.

The implication that the partyers are acting out in an effort to expel the middle class is beyond ignorant. They are simply partying, in the same way they have been for years. It is customary in Brooklyn’s Caribbean communities to have a DJ and sound system at practically any celebration—even baby showers and Christening parties. And yes, even those of us who are educated, employed, and middle class party this way.

You are talking about a neighborhood where it is—like it or not—part of the pre-existing culture and where noise regulations have not been enforced (in the same way that many laws are ignored in nabes all over the city). You have every right to call 311 or your local precinct and to raise the issue at community board meetings if you don’t like it. But please stop acting as though behavior is low income or gang-related just because you find it objectionable.

Heeheehee. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone played the race/ethnicity card. Blasting music at seismic labels late into the night without consideration for others is indeed rude, low-class behavior.

The use of DJs for celebrations is customary in most communities. The OP and others are not complaining about the usage of a sound system, but the volume and timing of same. Plenty of people, including first generation home-owning Brooklynites of Caribbean descent, are justifiably upset by this type of behavior.

Right-- When I go to parties with my coworkers, I (personally) find it really loud and hard to talk at, but that's me personally. But the parties happen only on Fridays or Saturdays and all music is off by 10pm (we start the beers, chicken, salt fish, and macaroni pie by 2pm). It's about timing and understanding that other people live in the community - regardless of their race/upbringing/hometown/etc.

    23. I don’t take issue with people being justifiably upset about the timing and volume of the sound systems, or with anything the OP said. I was responding to certain others on this thread and in similar threads about noise in the neighborhood. Just because the partyers may be loud and inconsiderate doesn’t make them uneducated, unemployed, low-income, or gang affiliated. And those are not the same thing as rude or low-class.

It's Memorial Day, and 495 St. John's Place is back at it.

There is a loud party with an amplified DJ, outside.

The party at hand is next to FDNY Engine 280/Ladder 132. If you're in the neighborhood and have a problem with the noise at 495 St. John's Place, communicate this to the 77th Precinct and/or 311 that partiers may be blocking the driveway of an active firehouse.

495 St. John's indeed. The noise was so loud last night, it might as well have been in my bedroom. I called 311 to file a noise complaint just after 9pm. At 11:14, I got an email from the 311 system reporting, "The Police Department responded to the complaint and determined that police action was not necessary." OK then! Is it wrong to expect FDNY personnel from the fire station directly next store to pay a visit and suggest that the volume come down a few decibels?

These parties happen every year. The firemen don't care. They sometimes go until early morning hours but often end at like 12am or so. Fortunately the parties that the guys at 495 Sterling throw don't get violent ie no gun play. That's a good seeing as many parties around this area do end in violence. I personally have little issue with the noise. I would never call 311 or the police due to people throwing a party this is Crown Heights not Bay Ridge. Those guys have a few parties a year and also have loud get togethers for big boxing events. I'd turn on the AC or get some earplugs.

    29. I empathize with the people who have to put up with the party noise. I'll just suggest it might not be most effective to report partiers that "may be blocking the driveway of an active firehouse" unless one actually sees the firehouse driveway blocked at the time.

To all those that are complaining, this area has been like this for ages. What you consider noise, is just the regular sounds of the neighborhood. Remember that you are the one moving into this neighborhood. Every block has a different feel and culture. If you don't like the one you've chosen, make another choice or learn to live with it. I think the most selfish course of action is to make fake accusations about firehouse driveway obstruction.

Playing loud music at 3:30 am is NOT a cultural issue. It's being selfish & rude ass to the people who live & work around you. Parties that go till midnight are fine on weekends. After that, it really needs to shut down or get turned down. It's still a residential area. People need their sleep. I do agree with you that making fake accusations about firehouse driveway obstruction is also a selfish course of action as well.

Well said, GOD. I always scratch my head when people try to market inconsiderate behavior as "culture". My building is a mix of yuppies/buppies and long-time residents, most of whom are Puerto Rican, African-American or Haitian. We all consider noise to be a respect issue and have all complained at one time or another when neighbors have violated what we consider to be standards of common courtesy.

      Yes.

Perhaps needless to say, most people find attributing rude behavior to "culture" to be a simplistic explanation. For example, I can think of so many people with whom I seem to share a heritage, skin color, social class, etc that act in an INDIVIDUAL manner I do not want associated with me, or the "culture" I am part of.

Over the past several years, this neighborhood has gone through a radical transformation of what Respect means. Hint: The new definition involves more norms embodied in laws, and relies a lot less on individual intimidation.

I've lived in this neighborhood for 10 years. Whether it's carribbean culture, black culture, or just neighborhood culture, the folks in this neighborhood have been being loud for a long time. Yes, it's rude. Yes, it's annoying. But every neighborhood has its annoying aspects. To some it might be annoying that there are babies crawling all over the place in Park Slope. For some it's that the music is too loud. For some it's that the teens seem to not care whether they walk straight into you or curse at the top of their lungs while running down the street. It sucks. But! I think it is wrong headed to say that it is "common courtesy" or "common knowledge" that one is supposed to be quiet after 10 p.m. That's ridiculous. Hell, I went to wasp-y boarding school and never heard that rule.

It might be common knowledge amongst the folks you grew up with or associated with. But let's not confuse your rules with everyone's rules. I have a friend who was raised to think that a girl must accept every date she is invited to go on. When I said that I'd never heard that rule, she looked at me like I was a heathen. I had a boss once who looked at me sideways because I'd never heard of Bendel's. I know kids who grew up on the Upper West Side (and go to tony private schools) who are surprised to hear that Harlem is a part of Manhattan. I know teens in Bed-Stuy who think that anything above the Bronx is Upstate New York.

We all have different knowledge bases. And different social norms. People who don't know what you know aren't necessarily low-class (and really, who are you, William F. Buckley, Jr.?) or uneducated. Also, they might be. But really, who cares? If you want them to be different, say you want them to be different. But don't call them stupid or ignorant just because they aren't like you in the ways that you think are important.

That's why I mentioned the variety of races, ages, nationalities and income levels in my building, while emphasizing that we all agree that loud music played at late hours is rude behavior. People from different worlds all agreeing on standards for common courtesy. Really.

But since egg woman implies that all standards of conduct must be honored, I think I will walk down Franklin Avenue naked while smoking angel dust and calling everyone vile names. When people call me rude, I will simply state that they don't understand me or my "knowledge base" and must therefore respect my "social norms".

This used to be Amerika where people worked a regularly hour jobs!! People expected other people to lower the noise around a certain time so people can go to work and make a living for the others who leech off them.

alot of times people of the street mistaken violence and intimidation as respect.

Yes, I think it is pretty common for people to confuse the difference between:

      "violence/intimidation/fear"
      and
      "respect".

However, we should still encourage those who live their lives based on violence and intimidation.

This classic clip from Bronx Tale explains that a long, happy, successful life (perhaps especially one based on intimidation) involves thinking about the consequences of your actions.

If you were a medieval ruler or dictator it is better to be feared than loved.

God gently bangs head against wall. Why did I make the dinosaurs extinct?

Why attack God? He may be as miserable as we are.

      God,

I just want to tell you that many people believe you and the late, great Haile Selassie share the same drivers license.

At this very moment, in graduate schools and marijuana palaces around the world, people who have never met Mr Selassie and were born after 1980 are debating whether Mr. Selassie's rule was based more on respect or fear.

      It is awesome....

11th commandment: Thou shall turn your music down at 10pm weekdays, 12am weekends. God needs to get up early in the morning and needs his rest.

Why attack God? He may be as miserable as we are.

      Fine.

But I am still going to donate $10 to Grand Army Plaza fund, so they put up a statue of Mr Selassie this year.

Did anyone else hear the loud party and gunshots that broke it up last night at 495 St Johns?
