Carnivore »
We ate at Maya last weekend. Food was great & we'll definitely be back. Hubs and I were remarking that within a half-mile radius of Chez BKChickie we've got a lot of very good Mexican choices. La Taq, the Mexican on Franklin, and Chiles y Chocolates.

      Don't forget Chavella's!
Chavella's--I did forgot the name. Isn't that the "Mexican on Franklin" I was referring to?

      Chavella's is on Classon.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Thanks. Then I don't know about a Mexican on Franklin, just Chavella's on Classon. But, we're pretty spoiled for choice around here.

Do you think that Pequena's will ever resolve its issues with the space on Vanderbilt and open?

I have no further actual information.

...but if you want pure speculation:

      a. Yes, I think they have put enough $ into the place that they will stick it out and open eventually.

      b. Maya will have built such a following by then that they may be unable to compete in the massive size burrito market. They may have to become a restaurant that is mostly a bar. ...and there are lots of those on Vandy.

      c. Sucks to be Pequena.

The rumor is that Pequena's is supposed to open within the month. I don't think Maya being on the same block will be much of an issue for them. As long as they make better food (which from what I've seen from Maya so far is a definite possibility), they won't have difficulty winning people over. And there's always room for another bar. The more bars there are in the neighborhood, the better it is for all of them, because it makes the area more of a destination for night life.

I think if Pequena ever opens that it will do well. Maya is mainly for take-out, whereas Pequena will be mostly a sit-down place and (hopefully) a bar.

Just got around to trying this place today - I ordered delivery. It was pretty terrible. The taco could have been good (how do you f'up a bean taco?) except they wrapped it in aluminum foil and by the time it got to me the flour tortillas (?!) were mush. The burrito bowl had tons of liquid in it I had to pour out before I could eat it and the zucchini tasted like Chinese food. The worst though was a salad. It was a tofu salad...that I found two pieces of chicken in. As a vegan this was pretty disturbing. The 'dressing' tasted like processed cheese, yet there was no cheese listed as an ingredient. There was also supposed to be hot sauce in the dressing and if there was it was incredibly weak. All of the food was bland.
And yes, I called them, but the guy on the phone just kept repeating the same thing about sending the salad. I really had my hopes up for a taqueria and this isn't it.

I got chicken in my veggie burrito a few weeks back. Terrible.

Wow this has never happened to me (objectionable meat in my burrito). I am shocked and grateful too, since my gf and I order veggie burritos from here pretty frequently.

My enthusiasm for Maya Taqueria has been slightly tarnished.

      Update Jan 2013:

Maya has applied for a beer and wine lic.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
