I witnessed a mugging on Sterling between Vanderbilt and Butler yesterday around 2:30 PM. Late 30s - Early 40s black male in blue pants, a turquise shirt and a denim jacket. He was asking an elderly woman if he could see her ring. Saying it looked just like his grandmothers. I walked by as he is harrasing her. I made sure the guy knew I was checking him out. He obviously didn't care. There were a ton of people on the street at the time. He got the ring and casually jogged off turning right on Butler. I called 911. I am not sure if the woman reported the crime to the 77th.

Did he grab the ring off of her finger? I don't fully understand the situation. Yes, what happened is bad, but it also sounds like the woman got suckered into giving this guy her ring. This might sound cold, but if she hadn't given him the time of day, then nothing would have happened.

you sound like a defense lawyer.

I just don't understand what happened. The guy stole her ring, but how? Did she give it to him to examine, and then he trotted off with it? Or, did he snatch it off of her finger? It's a crime, for sure, but it's also a street smarts issue. Don't wear your iPod while walking home from the subway; don't hand your ring to a stranger just because he asked.

Are you sure this is not some Ashton Kutcher prank? Did the guy ask for a cookie recipe or to borrow a cup of sugar? Walking down the block and found magnetic admiration for an old lady's ring? -
You got such a good descritption, maybe it would have been nice to see if the woman was alright, and helped her file a report with the police.

After I got off the phone with 911 I went up to the woman and let her know that I had called the police and that they were on their way. She was talking to two other women who had seen the guy run by. She was shaken but seemed ok. I left her with these two women and went upstairs to my apt and went to the window to watch for the police. When I reached the window the phone rang. It was the 911 operator. She asked if I was still there said the the police were on the block and asked if I would go and speak with them. I said yes, and went back downstairs. I did not see the police or the victim anywhere on the block. My hope is that the woman stoped the police and they picked her up and did a drive around to look for the guy.

Subject: Mugging
Could it be any more wrong than mugging an older woman? What scum. And it's been my experience with much older people that they may not be completely on the ball due to possible age related impairment. That they just don't realize what situation they're really in. That was probably a special ring to her and can't be replaced. Great that you called the cops and helped her out. I just don't get people who steal from those who show any signs of weakness. I have to think they come back in a future life as someone they would have picked on.
