Anyone have any idea what is going into the former Chris Creations space at the corner of Prospect and Vanderbilt? I walk by almost everyday and more often than not there is construction going on in the connected room in back of the storefront. It appears to be a kitchen of sorts and from the looks of it the new tenants are doing a nice job and putting a lot of money into the venture. I spotted some nice custom wood fixtures being moved into the space which makes me hopeful it will be well appointed whatever it is.. My guess is that is is going to be a bakery/coffee shop or (god forbid) ANOTHER pizza place due to the industrial mixer I've seen peeking out from behind the front gate/vestibule area. Anyone have more than just a guess as to what will eventually open here?
-
It's going to be a bagel place. The owners are the people from Zaytoons.

a little update via the Village Voice http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/archives/2010/04/zaytoons_owners.php Now I'm just waiting on info about Pequena, Goods, Way Station, and Minor Arcana....
-
603 Vanderbilt isn't on Prospect Place. Nor is Chris Creations across from Zaytoons. Chris Creations permit says no change in use which it would be if it was going to start serving food, no?

RE: Zaytoons bagel place. Sounds promising. Let's just hope that they learned their lesson the first time and don't call it "B69 Bagel." -
Subject: Bagels
I also heard bagels. Saw them moving in some bagel-making stuff. -
with all the trash talking i've heard the owners of the new bagel place doing (long before they open) about how they intend to put milk and joyce out of business i hope the place is a miserable failure. i'd take another muddy waters over this place and it hasnt even opened yet. I don't know that I will ever go back to zaytoons after some of the crap i've seen these guys pulling.
-
where has this trash talking been done? online? in person? i'd like to read and hear more about it.
-
hooray for second-hand information!
-
first hand. the owner said it directly to me. that he is looking forward to putting milk bar out of business. he's a real douche, imho.
-
Sounds like a douche. And he has no chance of putting Milk Bar out of business. People love that joint.
-
agree that douche has no chance of putting milk bar out of business. milk bar is a formula that is perfect for this neighborhood. (probably) bad bagels, not so much. especially if the bagel shop is as dirty and disrespectful to the neighbors as zaytoons is. can't tell you how many times they've piled nasty garbage outside for days, had delivery trucks up on the sidewalk, left dog crap festering next to their cellar food prep area...nasty.
-
if the bagels are even half way decent i'd sooner give them my money than spend $10 on a few morsels at milk bar.I've done a lot of lying in my time. I've lied to men who wear belts. I've lied to men who wear suspenders. But I'd never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both belt and suspenders.
-
I'm just psych'd I won't have to walk all the waly to the Slope for normal size bagels. Bergen Bagels are too huge. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
yeah, the bagel place has already been fined a few times for garbage disposal and hasnt been properly ventilating when they paint so the fire department has made a few visits. i remember seeing the fire dpt one time pouring water into the sewer through a bunch of hoses and it turned out some ass had poured all these flammable solvents down there and they were worried about an explosion. dont know if it was these guys or not, but it was that corner during their painting storm, so i got money on it was-- tho they'll deny it for the epa fines, no doubt. hungry or not, i'd never give these guys a red cent.
-
As someone who is new here and does not know you, I have to assume from your over the top posts in this topic that you have an axe to grind. I'm giving your claims zero weight and plan to try the bagel place as soon as it opens. That said, when I just want a single bagel, I get it at Prospect Cafe. They have Bagel Hole bagels. Milk Bar looks ok from the outside, but it exudes a hipper-than-thou vibe that has kept me out (not to mention all the reports of so-so food at high prices). For me personally, it is not the sort of place I really want here in PH, but I will try it eventually.
-
Nicholas, you are new here and you don't know jayce. The statements are not over the top, but that can be debated forever.i really am from Brooklyn
-
Minet- I said I don't know him or her in my own post. Here is what jayce has accused the owners of new bagel place of: - "Trash talking" about putting Joyce and Milk Bar out of business. - Having been fined "several times" for garbage disposal. - Having improper ventilation when painting which resulted in the fire department making "several visits." - Pouring flammable solvents into their basement which caused the fire department to pour water in due to fear of explosion. - Having pending EPA fines. (I think this one was speculation.) Even if jayce is the nicest most rational person in Prospect Height, these claims are over the top hysteria. If the fire department was actually concerned that the building might explode, would they pour water in the basement? How does this clear fumes? Wouldn't they evacuate the block like they do for a gas leak? Wouldn't they call a hazzmat team to clean hazardous solvents rather than washing them down the drain? It is possible some of the other claims are true, but I tend to doubt them given the context and lack of proof.
-
i do not want to debate the issues- that you don't actually know about. but... - "Trash talking" about putting Joyce and Milk Bar out of business.- True - Having been fined "several times" for garbage disposal.- True - Having improper ventilation when painting which resulted in the fire department making "several visits."- True - Pouring flammable solvents into their basement which caused the fire department to pour water in due to fear of explosion.(this was speculation) - Having pending EPA fines. (I think this one was speculation.) [i](never said there were pending fines- was said that they would deny the speculation of above for the fines /i] maybe other people know things that you do not... May we all move on now.... when they do open, I hope they are nicer to the neighborhood then the Zaytoons occurrences and that you get to enjoy your bagels in peace.i really am from Brooklyn
-
>>maybe other people know things that you do not... Possible, but I'm not in the habit of accepting things I read online without proof especially when the claims are this outrageous. Moving on...
-
Jayce may or may not have an axe to grind, but many of us have actually met her offline, and she was a valued member of our Brooklynian community long before Zaytoons even opened This is NOT someone who created an account just to spread shit about someone.
-
Can anyone provide links to some evidence for the claims against the Zaytoons/Olde Brooklyn Bagel business owners? If I can be shown that these claims are all true then I may decide to spend my money elsewhere, but I'm not going to avoid trying them based on internet message board assertions alone.
-
I am starting to think Nicholas joined to simply promote the new bagel shop.
-
That is about as likely as you having made up the story about the toxic chemicals because you dislike the owners. Oh wait, you did make it up (or "speculated" according to your friend Minet). My only interest in this nonsense is that I take exception to seeing a local independent small business being trashed before it even opens. If everything you claim is true, I'll be the first to boycott them. For what it is worth, I've never met the owners and have never even eaten at Zaytoons (but have been meaning to try it). In fact, I didn't even have particularly high hopes for their bagels as 99% of bagel places are awful. However, if we don't support local independent business people than we might as well invite the chain stores in. That is why I'd like to see them get a fair chance rather than being maligned by anonymous rumors. Anyway, I'm really ready to move on from this discussion and hope others will too unless they have some proof or a source to offer up.
-
"Can't we all just get along" LOL I hope their trash talking was just b.s. Sounds petty. I'll let the bagels speak for themselves.
-
can we move on and talk about bagels? anyone know if they've opened? if not, when? if so, what about the bagels?"Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait."
-
They haven't opened yet. I tried to peer in as best I could the other day and there appeared to be quite a bit of work yet to do...
-
Does anyone know what's happening with this space? I walked by there this week and noticed that it's still not open.
-
Apparently they've changed their name again...
-
according to the brownstoner link, it's back to "olde brooklyn bagel shoppe." that ye olde shit sure worked wonders for the ice cream shoppe.
pathetic name but if they have good bagels, all is forgiven. brownstoner also suspects recent activity means they're going to open soon.
"Here's a little tip I would like to relate: Many fish bites if you got good bait." -
pathetic name but if they have good bagels, all is forgiven.
Agreed. Brought some bagels from my third favorite NYC bagel place (and third not because the bagels are particularly what I'm looking for in a bagel--Bagel Hole & H&H cornering that market--but because it's near my office and the bagels are still quite tasty and very fresh) to friends in NJ last week. The friends thought they were amazing. I know better. I've become such a bagel snob.
-
Saw them getting ready to open tomorrow. I will give it a chance, maybe hit it up before work.
-
Had the pumpernickel with a light green onion spread and a coffee. I'm not a bagel expert but it seemed really fresh. One thing that is good for me is that they open at 6am and the coffe perefectly drinkable.
-
Woo hoo.
Are the bagels huge, or normal size?
I find the bagels at Bergen bagel to be too huge.No more walking to Bergen bagel?
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Walked by this afternoon, looked busy and very nice! We'll give it a try this weekend. I bit my lip at the typo on the window though: "ye olde fashion way." FASHIONED.
-
Went there around 7 am today... and it was OPEN. I don't know why no other place on Vandy realizes that residents want coffee/eats before 10, so this already a huge plus for the place.
Second, the bagels were hot, fresh, soft in the middle, crisp on the outside, and not at all expensive. I got milk, 3 bagels and an egg sandwich (killer, btw) for $8.
The coffee may have been serve-yourself, but now that I'm saying that I am not sure if it was just the fixins... it was early.
Also, they were totally nice and the place was roomy and stocked with good drinks and healthy snacks. I predict a hit.
-
We went here this morning and were impressed. They have a decent selection of bagels, breakfast sandwiches, drinks, and deli products. The dark-roasted coffee was great (self-serve) and the staff was very courteous. The prices were fair, too. The only glitch was that the ordering process was a tad disorganized, but I attribute that to it being a new business. The line was practically stretched out the door, so I think it will be successful. Good-bye Bergen Bagel!
-
I've been twice now (yesterday and today). The store looks good, the selection is nice, and the prices are fair. That said, both of the bagels I've gotten we're a lot softer than I prefer. I think I'll stick with the places where I can get a bit more density and chewiness.
P.S. I like that it's self-serve coffee so I can make it just how I like it. The coffee is okay but nothing fabulous.

Sandwich report: They name their sandwiches after neighborhoods.
I consumed a Carrol Gardens hero, a cliff bar and a can of soda. $9.85
Sandwich was yummy combination of turkey, dried tomatoes and munster cheese.
They have installed dog tiedowns out front. Several people pet Dude while I ate inside.
I predict this place will do well, but do question thier "established in 2010" claim.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
What's their "ProCro" taste like?
If you're happy, you're not paying attention.
spurn Productions, Inc. -
Thankfully, I saw no such offering.
But I imagine the sandwich to be very confused and poorly constructed.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
I was worried that their bagels would be too soft, but I only eat bagels toasted (I know, I know), so it was not a problem for me. Anyway I think everyone is very particular about what they like so no bagel is going to please everyone.
The employees were really friendly on Saturday afternoon. There was an issue with no one knowing how much anything cost, but they'll figure that out.
Good choice of cold drinks, too, and a can of regular Coke was $1. I remember the 75c days well but still cannot bear to pay more than $1. So, pleased with that, too.
-
I attempted to go again today, but the line was literally stretched out the door. Maybe I shouldn't write Bergen Bagel off just yet, as it probably would have taken me less time to walk down there than to wait in that long line. Still, I'm glad to have this new place on Vanderbilt.
-
They still need to figure out the work flow. The people at the cash register need to wait for the actual bagels to be prepared and passed down. I got the wrong kind of cream cheese and got a seriously upset stomach within one hour. The guys aren't wearing gloves like at Bergen Bagels. I went back to Bergen today.
-
I went there on saturday. The bagels are definitely as good as bergen. Had my usual 2 eggs and ham on a toasted everything and was not disappointed. Also took a bite of my friends lox spread on a toasted whole wheat everything and was impressed as well. Attempted to go again on sunday but as the other poster pointed out the line was out the door. I would say in about a month after they get the kinks worked out I will never have to go to bergen again. Bergen is a great place mind you but it is a bit of a hike.
GO BAGELS!!!!
-
We tried them late this morning, 11:30ish. Line was long, place was packed, and staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, but the bagels were delicious and the inside of the place looks really nice. Prices comparable to Bergen Bagel. Great drink/snack selection too. Will definitely be back!
-
Yes, the bagels are excellent. They're substantially smaller than Bergen Bagels though, and not any cheaper, so if you're looking for a bagel that you can eat for breakfast _and_ lunch you probably want to go the extra few blocks.
They didn't get my order straight, in spite of writing it down. This happens at BB as well, but you can keep an eye on the guy while he's making your food, which is more difficult here.
They do have some bagel variants that are interesting. The "multi-grain" is delicious, sprinkled with whole grains. And some of their original sandwiches sound pretty damn good, too.
Will be back.
-
I think the bagels are terrific. My sentiments were echoed by the other 2 native new yorkers I was eating with. This will be my go-to place for bagels now.
-
Finally went this morning. So so delicious. They do salads with 5 toppings for a good price (I think $5 for a small?) and I had a delicious bagel with egg-salad. I am so excited for this place.
I wish they were a tad bit closer. Like in the first floor of my building.
