When did this happen? I'm pretty sure it was open on Friday night, but I walked by last night and there was a "For Rent" sign in the entryway.

Note to readers: This is the diner that was located by Sharlene's Bar on Flatbush avenue. It was there a long time.

The guy who owns the diner owns a couple of buildings on the block so I don't think it's a rent issue, it's a mystery!

Ya know, when I walked by there a few days ago I wondered if it was being closed or renovated or what....it looked deserted, but I didn't have time to examine it too closely.

This stinks! They made a MUCH better burger than "The Usual." I hope that crappy chain 5 Guys didn't do them in, but that would be too short a time since that place opened to blame them, I guess.

There are rumors that a lot of buildings between GAP and 7th are about to get a makeover.

I wonder if this is an unofficial part of the area's change.

Hmm, well that wouldn't be a terrible thing because I think that stretch of Flatbush between Park and Sterling is looking pretty shabby, but it will be a terrible thing if this means that we're stuck with more of the same cellphone store/bad bodega mix that seems to be the recurring theme.

A few times a year I get a hankering for a cheeseburger. Parkside's always hit the spot for me.

I suspect that Flatbush Ave between Grand Army Plaza and the arena will become increasingly corporate over the next few years.

I'm thinking suburban mall type stores: GAP, Lane Bryant, etc.

...sort of like Broadway near Spring St.

OK so the guy I thought owned both the diner and building actually owns neither. I assumed he had something to do with the diner because he's Greek... I know, sorry .....
He is the nephew of the owner of the building the diner is in as well as the one that used to be the Dreamy's mattress place, he just looks after the properties for his uncle in Florida.
The diner was closed by the Health Department, not for anything really gross but because no one on the premises had a food handlers certificate.... Owners just decided to walk away..

so, give its location between Sharlene's Bar and Kings Pharmacy, what would you put there?

I would take advantage of the current kitchen infrastructure, and put a mid level steakhouse/ribs place there.

It would have beer, and live music. Many people would come via the B/D.

I love Five Guys! I've eaten there a few times since it opened and plan to continue doing so. Nothing like a fast-food burger afer a long, stressful day of work...

What about another diner? I thought the location was pretty good for that.

Too bad about the food-handler's certificate. The place had a "B" and I wonder if it was on some kind of probation because of the certificate.

I am thinking with a little work, those blocks of Flatbush could become a shopping and dining destination.

... A row restaurants and shopping that is slightly more upscale than diner.

Needless to say, Sharlene's would also get some changes.

Hmm, this is an interesting idea. I was initially thinking bland chain stores, but you're thinking of something with a bit more character. I like it. Something along the lines of what you might find on Main Street in Greenwich or Darien (just to throw out two walkable main streets which immediately come to mind with upscale retail.)

People could shop on Flatbush, and then get a drink and a bite on Vanderbilt. Park at Atlantic Yards if they're driving in, or hop on the 2/3 if they've come by subway.

On the other hand: don't you go messin' with my Natural Land.

I'm not sure the neighborhood would support a stretch that upscale.

I'm thinking some mid level stores and restaurants. The person who is revamping the stores near the former Blockbuster is the same guy who "developed" Bergen between Flatbush and 6th [Bark, Babeland, a bike store, some fufu places I don't go, and City Sub.], so he may have a similar vision.

Natural Land would not be messed with.

I'd mostly eye the vacant storefronts. As a PH resident, I would focus on retail that Vanderbilt does not presently offer, such as a housewares store.

Pintchik's involved with the Blockbuster space? I did not know that.

I'd love to see a housewares store akin to A Cook's Companion on Atlantic, a good stationery shop (why Heights Stationers didn't change with the times and upscale its inventory a bit is beyond me) and I'd like to see the Key Foods expand (and stretch out its aisle space a bit) into the vacant storefront next door.

I have to think the Parkside Diner space is NOT part of the Pintchik renovations across the street. I walked by last night and it's available for rent through a third party realtor. The Blockbuster space, on the other hand, has work permits issued to Michael Pintchik.

I liked the diner for what it was, but the food was only ok and the place was getting pretty run-down.

Given the amount of competition now present in the neighborhood, I do not think anyplace with only OK food and atmosphere will survive.

....a competitive, capitalist scrub brush may soon attack Flatbush, just as it has already attacked Vanderbilt.

Hopefully there's still room for some authentic old-school no-nonsense establishments. El Gran Castillo will just have to fight the good fight and represent.

It would be a sad day if Gran Castillo (el Carneviento) were to be affected.

...where would I get a yummy pork chop sandwich?

This is sad news. I always used to get their mexican grilled chicken wrap. It did always seem to be empty though, so maybe the health department thing just gave them a reason to do what they had been thinking about.

I would love to see a nice magazine shop, something that sells more than just GQ, Elle and a bunch of pornos. Something like Around the World on 40th or Universal News.

It'd also be great if there was someplace that delivered good american food. Comfort food perhaps. I really liked the food from that place that used to be in the mattress store space. They made an excellent meatloaf and a mean catfish.

Parkside Diner is reopening, but presumably with a new name to go along with the new ownership brought in by the building owners:

... it will be re-opening soon, possibly by the end of the week ... Looks like it will indeed remain a Greek Diner, albeit with new ownership ...

Sounds like there will be little in the way of Greek food despite the Greek ownership.
