I finally tried Piquant on Friday night with my husband and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. First, they had half price margaritas which were great - $4 for a really well made Sauza margarita on the rocks. We tried a couple of appetizers -- grilled chicken skewers with chipotle aioli and chimichurra sauce, a sweet potato tamale with pulled pork in green chili sauce and beef brisket sliders. The chicken wasn't that exciting but the sliders and tamale was really good. Definitely would recommend it for drinks and appetizers. Looking forward to checking out their brunch menu soon. It's the old "mitchell's " spot on Flatbush near Bergen Street 259 Flatbush Avenue.

They seem pretty pricey. $9 for chicken tacos?

How much did you spend on food there Dee Dee, did you feel full afterward? Just curious because I do love southwest food did it seem authentic?

I went for lunch and had the three fish tacos for $9. For lunch it wasn't a bad price and I was impressed with the caliber of the food. It wasn't amazing, but the portion size and quality were above average. It seems to have an identity crisis though. It is the same owner from Mitchell's and he has left a few items on the menu that have no place being there, i.e. a pastrami sandwich...

I think the concept could work for them, with the bar scene being a good focus, it just does seem pricey for certain items and with Maya Taqueria opening up on Vanderbilt they will have some competition.

Side note, the owner is looking to open a Mitchell's 2.0, where he will sell only sandwiches. Word has it he is looking in the Prospect Heights area. Hope it works out, those were some of the best sandwiches available in the area.

I tried this place not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised. For reasons I don't know, I never took it seriously, but now I'm glad that I gave it a shot. The atmosphere is more upscale, so that might account for the higher prices. Drinks were great and low-priced. I was surprised to see how crowded it was, given how in the past incarnations it always seemed empty.

I had brunch there a few weeks back. The food was good and it wasn't crowded. It was a good value for brunch and I'd go again.

we tried it out when they started brunch and it was kind of a disaster (bad coffee, slow and incompetent service, ran out of stock items like english muffins, got our order wrong, etc...). they tried to make it right, and we chalked it up to the somewhat-recent addition of brunch service, but it was still disappointing. glad to hear it may have improved - it's a good space and the price is right for a slightly-better-than-diner brunch. we'll try it again!

Went tonight and was pretty good. Duck tamale and churros for dessert were the highlights.

Though I hate false advertising. Happy Hour sign outside doesn't say it's for the bar only.

I ate there last night. I had mussels and steak. The food was pretty good. Something about the place was off though. I cant put my finger on what it is but the atmosphere wasnt inviting. The food made up for it though. I would definitely go back.

This actually puts a damper in the "bk4ever is a Prime6NYC shill" line of thought. While, yes, you're somewhat dissing the place diagonally across the street from the soon-to-be-open place two of your three posts seem to praise, I actually completely agree with your assessment of Piquant.

I thought the food was very good the one time I went. The menu was thoughtful, with many of the descriptions making me yearn for New Mexico itself. If anything, the menu was trying TOO hard, with TOO many choices. The atmosphere was off, though, with the only thing I could figure being the constant presence of the owner (the Mitchell's/Charcuterie guy) up front. You need to be able to trust your business enough to leave it alone every now and then. This is the same problem that plagued Helios as well. Owner never left the damn place.

From what I've heard, though, there's a new manager there who wants to turn Piquant into a "private party" kind of place. For a place with food that good, that would be a mistake. Tweak your menu, lower the price point a little, tell the owner to stay home, increase your neighborhood presence, and you've got a winner in Piquant for sure.
