I saw some cops cuffing a few guys just before 6PM yesterday an my way home from work on Lincoln Place closer to the Washington side. Does anybody know what was going down?
-
They need to come and nab some of the jerkoff kids that hang on the Underhill side. Everyday I have to walk my dog around the broken bottle landmines that they leave. Not to mention the 20+ person impromptu parties and shouting matches in the middle of the street after 11pm on week nights. And no this is not a 'hate on teenagers' type of rant, if they would not litter, vandalize and scream/shout and otherwise ruin our neighborhood, I couldn't give two shits if they hung out until 4am.

I couldn't agree more. -
Be patient. In a few short years, most of these kids will have new homes upstate. By the time their sojourn is complete, their building will have been converted to condos and they will be forced to move elsewhere.

This is not a gentrification complaint. This is about having common sense and not believing that the world revolves around you. As i said, I have no problem with them hanging out and otherwise just being teenagers, but having a modicum of respect for your neighbors goes a long damned way.

Same old, same old..those thugs will be released in a couple of weeks and resume to selling dope and stolen items on the sidewalk or outside of a car's trunk."Never take sleeping pills and laxative on the same night" -

Sadly, I think that IS teenagers being teenagers..... -
Think of teenagers as cycling between adulthood and toddlerhood -- in one moment they are surprisingly responsible and wise, and the next they are totally self-centric and impulsive. This IS teenagers being teenagers -- the problem is with their parents -- where the hell are THEY? Why are these kids out till all hours?

I second you on this...sometimes it seems that those kids live on the streets and just go home for a break! Lincoln is one of the worse block in that respect, despite the fact that Prospect park is around the corner, there is a playground with multile basketball courts in the PS down on Underhill and St marks I believe... but these kids will bang the ball right under your window on the sidewalk for hours and hours..."Never take sleeping pills and laxative on the same night" -

Last time I checked, at any given time one-in-nine darker-skinned men of child-rearing age in this country are behind bars, so that may be a contributing factor. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here. -- Abraham Lincoln -
Well, there's lots of reasons. Including the over-incarceration of black men, yes. "Be their daddy" Funny. How 'bout I be yours?

i agree. and also let's keep in mind, people getting clubbed with wooden sticks is not just "teenagers being teenagers"... nor are the other muggings, attempted muggings, nor are the beat downs. something is wrong. -

Yeah the problem is American society values. It won't be changing anytime soon.Walking on the beaches looking at the peaches. -
We called 311 on them, and got transfered to 911, on Tuesday night. They we banging on the metal utility box on Underhill, which is almost directly under our window. Couldnt take it anymore. It got quiet within 5 minutes. We have zero issues with the kids hanging out on the corner, because better they hang out there together than running the streets doing who knows what. But, they need to learn some respect for those around them. They need to stop with the yelling. I'd love to toss water balloons at them off the fire escape when they wont stop screaming, but that would just cause bigger issues ....
-
My gf said they were up all night on Tuesday, on the street. Literally. She heard them every hour throughout the night and then we she went out for a run at 6am, they were still out there. I dont bother calling 311 anymore, they seemed unimpressed everytime I field a complaint (even when they could hear the noise from the street while on the phone with me). I call the 77, but have yet to see a 'timely' response to my complaint. Not picking on the 77, who i'm sure have a lot to handle, but i have called before and the phone just ring and ring, on the third time they picked up and the officer sounded annoyed that I had inconvenienced her. What ever happened to the Operation Impact presence on St Johns and Underhill? Things were very quiet for about 2 weeks.
-
St. Johns and Underhill is not in the impact zone. For a short time they were using impact personell to combat the rise in robberies in the Underhill area. There is talk of having a second impact zone or moving the impact zone in July when a new police academy class graduates. There is only one police officer answering the phone at the 77 (in addition to the many other tasks he/she may perform. Perhaps she was annoyed and possibly by nothing that had to do with you or your noise complaint but her annoyance shouldn't be taken out on you. The shortage of police officers on the street also causes a lack of police officers inside (not including personell assigned to the administrative staff). There is a great deal of activity going on inside the station house and sometimes the phone just can't get answered right away. And that's the way it is.
-
I can totally understand that. I'm not tryin to attack them, just was a weird pause moment...having the police's phone ring off the hook. Not something you would think would happen.
-
god i hate kids. just kidding, it would bug me if i had to deal with that shit, there really are no kids in front of my place on washington, plus my room is in the back overlooking a lovely garden, first truly quiet apartment i have ever had in bk. when i live off of flatbush in lefferts garden that was mayhem, constant honking, sirens, people yelling, my apartment would shake when buses trucks went by, people playing ball in the building hallway, loud music etc. that shit sucked.
-
The kids on Lincoln are way more out of control than any other summer I can remember. I'm not about to call the police to bust kids for sitting on my stoop, but it's driving me crazy. They're super aggressive and always talking about weed, busting caps and 9mms. Every morning we have to come out of the building and wade through trash, bottles, and chicken bones. There's got to be a better solution than this -us vs. them- dynamic and calling 911 every time it reaches a threshold. /vent
-
jarvis » ...snip ...There's got to be a better solution than this -us vs. them- dynamic and calling 911 every time it reaches a threshold. /vent
But what is that solution? Whos going to be the one who walks out at 1 a.m. and asks them to be quiet? Or call their parent(s)? Unfortunately that approach is not going to work. And as soon as someone attempts that, they're going to be targeted by these kids, and we all know how aggressive they are. Do we have a choice other than to call the police? We should all start hanging out on the corner of Underhill and St. Johns until all hours being loud. It would confuse the shit out of them. -
I agree that there is really no better alternative at this point. Funny, but I was actually thinking that we should all start spending a bunch of time on the stoops..just kicking it. Not necessarily being loud, but at least making it totally undesirable to be there just through our presence. midnight bar-be-que anyone?
-
Solution to kids kicking it on your stoop: Place large, planter on stoop (preferably pink) and plant multiple, colorful flowers. Worked for my building. No kids want to roll blunts by a planter full of flowers cuz flowers be gay.

Don't kids who wanna roll just vandalize the rosebuds so they can bring in their own buds? If that's all it takes to quell shenanigans, then flowers should go everywhere- it would kill lots of birds with one stone. Why haven't you been to Tacos Los Hermanos yet?

If these kids are on your property then they are trespassing and calling the cops might not be a bad idea. Not to get them arrested but to have the cops tell them that they are on private property and they can be arrested if they insist on using your stoop as a hang out. If it's a building and someone lives there it is a more touchy situation but you can get involved in a program with the precint via a tenant's association (I believe) in which the police will make random stops at your building and will question anyone who appears to be trespassing and will require identification and proof of residence. This has helped a lot of buildings that were being besieged by people hanging out or doing some kind of illegal activity. Lastly, since these are teenagers and if you can deal with it, then do nothing as it will subside as they get older. When I first moved to my apartment in CH, I used to hear people on the front steps all the time. As time moved on, and the teenagers became adults this activity calmed down.Reach for the Stars, saying I am and I am going to be.

Hi there--
I just saw this thread-- anyone who commented on it four years ago still around on the block and able to give some feedback on what's going on now? Has the situation improved or are the kids still hanging around sometimes?
thanks

Nomadgirl,
You may want to take the discussion offline for best results. For example, Bar Sepia is showing the VP Debates tonight, 10/11/2012. The bar's owner, Delissa, will be there.
Her audience is very local and knowledgable about the area. You can ask them questions as they hiss at Ryan.
If you ask Delissa, she will even point out a guy who answers to "whynot_31".
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
hey there again!
yes- I think you are right. I can't make it tonight- but I will make sure to look for you at Sepia over the weeks to come and will say hello to Delissa. I am pretty sure I am going to take the apt. I have walked back over a couple times over the past few days and night- and think it is going to be quite alright.
-
The neighborhood has changed a lot in the last few years, and continues to change with each move-in date. Not passing judgement, just an observation. Sepia is a great call, a friendly smile and hello to those who live in your community goes a long way.
