Our building, on Vanderbilt between Park and Sterling, was vandalized in the oddest way last night...someone spread poop all over our front door and in the keyhole. Human poop.

We're a small building, only 8 apartments, and so far no one is aware of any personal issues that might have instigated such a reaction...so I'm wondering if any other buildings in the hood have been similarly decorated as of late?

It was cleaned up before it was documented - realizing later that we should have photographed it for the police first. Such is life.

The same thing happened to our building on Park between Vanderbilt and Underhill twice. First time maybe a year ago the second a couple of months ago. Police not contacted but if there is a next time they will be.

Well, Greenleaf, I'm sorry that it's happened to you but kind of relieved to know that we aren't being stalked in some way. If it happens again, please post...and if it happens to us again I'll update as well.

Eastbloc, if you have a dog, you start to become very aware of the smell difference between human and dog poop (at least if you pick up your dog's poop), which are the most likely candidates. Any kind of poop smeared on the door is pretty freaking nasty. Also, cat and horse poop are pretty recognizable.

Before reading that it is human poop, I just assumed that some hero had followed home a dog owner that did not pick up it's dog's poop and kindly "left" it for them, hopefully with a note to the residents to ID the offender.

I like the webcam idea if it is a recurring problem.

Speaking of poop: On my way down Nostrand Avenue this morning I saw a poop smear the size of a dinner plate that was about a quarter inch high. I couldn't imagine the animal that would release something that size or how anyone could have mistakenly stepped in it. There were smears for a half a block as the hapless victim tried to get it off his/her shoes.

Nothing starts a day off worse than contemplating where poop comes from...

Maybe I have a strange dog (or a strange digestive tract), but her poop is pretty indistinguishable from a lot of human poop I've seen. That's why I was wondering.

I think which smells worse (dog vs human) is subjective, and based a lot on diet.

That said, my dog's poop only smells as bad my own after someone thinks feeding it lots of cheese is a good idea.

Hahaha...this is becoming a great thread. Another way to tell is see if a dog is disgusted by it or wants to roll in it. They tend to avoid the poop of other dogs (except maybe poop eaters?) and have a horribly strong urge to roll in the shit of other species. No joke, there's an evolutionary explanation for this I've read if anyone really needs to know.

What I read at some point said it started with wolves. Supposedly they would roll in the shit of other species to mask their own smell, hence not rolling in the poop of other wolves; this was to help them as predators.

I know my own dog likes to roll in shit (there's so much human feces in the park) but is disgusted by the poop of other dogs, and every dog I've ever had was like this. As a kid, our dogs would find cat poop to roll in. Some dogs in the park go for the horse poop (which is not required to be picked up).

We had someone at work a few years ago smearing feces on the wall in various places of the office - a conference room, the copy room and the men's bathroom. We got an email from HR about someone defecating in the office. I read the email quick and thought someone was defacing the office and didn't understand why everyone was all up in arms talking about it. Then I realized..... wtf is wrong with people. I work in a corporate office where you need a badge to get in so it was really strange.

I do not think they ever found the guy. I know they installed more cameras and it was never mentioned again by HR. My joke back then was "wow, someone hates their job more than me."

Perhaps the person who is doing this in the neighborhood is autistic. I have several friends who work with autistic people and feces related incidents are common.

Do we have a serial poop spreader, or a typo in the Patch?

The original poster states s/he lives on Vanderbilt, yet the Patch reports an incident on Washington. Likewise, on incident may have happened on Monday, and the other on Tuesday!

Serial poop spreader, indeed. We live on Vanderbilt - greenleaf is on Park Place and the folks from the Patch are on Washington.

Kind of reminds me of the arborcide guy last year. Of all crimes, killing trees isn't the worst - but I was awfully sad when he took out the trees on our block.

Yes, the arborcide guy was so rampant and infamous that some people began to fear for his safety and (if I may say so), cleverly figured out a way to get him care after the traditional, preferred methods failed.

I suspect Serial Poop Spreader needs similar intervention, but to pull it off, we will need a lot more crowd sourcing and crowd cooperation.

Although we lack evidence, I think I would prefer to think of this as the actions of one person, as opposed to coincidence.

Hmm, delivers fresh poop to your doorstep in rain, sleet or snow? I go for The "Poostman".

Btw, sounds like someone needs to get a front door camera...they are getting cheaper and cheaper and could provide hours of entertaining footage for this website.

Two thoughts:
1) our dog could be used as a barometer on the human/dog issue. He only eats human poop. So, if needed we can bring him by a door and see if he will lick it.
2) I theorize it to be human because if it were dog, the supply would be huge and more than one door could be smeared per night.

mrs whynot, hopefully it won't happen again - but if it does we may call on your pooch to settle the debate. My assessment was that it was of the human variety, but the (very kind) neighbor who did the clean up says that after being up close and personal with it, he thinks it was canine.

What more does one need to know? The door was smeared with poop. No one knows who did it or what species it was from. Better to interview the pooperator.
