Slowly, the merchant association is trying to change the block's image.

Doesn't sound comparable to the 5th ave one (or even the vanderbilt ones) but I respect them doing something and may go out to support.

Last years event was maybe 300 people.

I think all of the merchants realize that they are in an improving district, but not one that is close to what 5th Ave has become.

5th has enough mass of people to support the stores.

Washington ave around it still has alot of under utilize buildings.

I think Vanderbilt has realized it does not need to spend money on advertising and events.

Lame! I do sometimes wonder how that many bars/restaurants/hair places can survive there...

Well there are a lot of reasons someone would rather walk down Vandy than Washington. The quality of goods, though, is probably the same.

In preparation for Wash Ave Rocks, a giant chalk board was painted on the Ave last night. Thanks to Kennith from Winey Neighbor and Michael from Park Delicatessen for your efforts, and to all over neighbors for showing your support! We look forward to sharing all of our hard work with you this Saturday!!

This Saturday, August 18th the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA) invites the community to celebrate the history and the future of Washington Avenue with the third annual WASH AVE ROCKS! Street Fair.

From noon until 6pm, Washington Avenue will come alive between St. Marks Avenue and Prospect Place to showcase the neighborhood offerings of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, which have served as Brooklyn’s cultural hub for generations.

This year’s street fair celebrates the essence of the Mom-and-Pop shop, from the neighborhood’s pioneers to entrepreneurial newcomers.

The day will be jam-packed with a host of events and exciting entertainment for all ages to enjoy. Highlights from the day include:

      • A Food Taste-Off judged by food critics from Grub Street, Saveur Magazine and Edible Brooklyn; the appetizer contest winner will receive a trophy from New York City Council Member Letitia James and bragging rights (12:30pm)

      • A Fashion Show featuring local hair salons and clothing shops parading the runway (4:30pm)

      • A full slate of performers, including the nationally acclaimed Double Dutch group the Stan’s Pepper Steppers

      • A photo retrospective featuring images of the area through the decades

Join us this Saturday to celebrate Family, Food and Fashion!

Being listed in the NYT is still fun:

Washington Avenue Street Fair (Saturday) This year’s fair, “Wash Ave Rocks!,” celebrates the essence of the mom-and-pop shop with local vendors offering a variety of food and merchandise. The event, sponsored by the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association, also includes food taste-offs, a fashion show and entertainment. Donated school supplies will be distributed by merchants, and there will also be other giveaways from Brooklyn cultural institutions. From noon until 6 p.m. Washington Avenue between St. Marks Avenue and Prospect Place, washington-avenue.org; free.

It is isn't as exciting as making the NYT, but being listed in the Patch is still a good thing.

How many gunshots at this event. I'll start a pool - mine guess is that with the rain, there'll only be three shots fired.

If you are right, that would be three more shots than we had in the prior two festivals.

As in prior years, this event will be a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and Washington Avenue Merchants.

      Rain or shine.

That was fun. Would have been great if it were bigger than a single block, too!

Just curious what prompted this comment? I went and thought it was a really great mix of people. It's nothing like a St. John's block party or the Labor Day party where there's tons of booze...

    28. Sadly we missed it this year but went last year, it was amusing to see Rohan from NOK automotive officiating over the dog show.

Congrats to all those who put this together. You can count on this being 5 blocks long, then 10 blocks long, in the not so distant future.
