I'm on a personal mission to rehabilitate the patch of dirt in my front yard. Does anyone know where I could rent or borrow a rototiller here in Brooklyn? Has anyone had success at Home Depot with a rental like this? Any information would be useful. Thanks Brooklyn! Get out there and green up your yards this spring!

How big of a patch? If it's a small area you should just use a good old fashion shovel and a bow rake. And that's the way it is.

Go to the hardware store and get an old fashioned pitchfork. Stick, stomp, pry, turn. Do it soon while the earth still has the winter wet in it. Spread some bagged compost or manure on top before you turn it. You can do a 20x20 patch in less than a half an hour. Put down some more compost and you'll be ready to go after the next rain. Soil turns easily this time of year.

There's equipment rental places on MacDonald Ave, but I don't know about rototillers. Shovel/pitchfork sounds good for a small patch anyway. Alternately, you could hire someone to do the the shovel/pitchfork...there used to be young Irish guys in NYC to work that would turn over your garden. Wildly quaint...

Thanks for the advice folks. I think the pitchfork idea is the way to go. I don't know that I'm going to need any Irish guys to help me out though. Maybe I'll just buy one of my own... if anyone needs to borrow it in the future, let me know!

If you need an Irish guy, they'll be on drunk on 5th Ave next week. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

I prefer a Grub Ho.
No! Not that kind!
This kind works better!
