Seriously how many new store fronts are being worked on? I have kind of lost count.
I know the City bakery outpost is going in near milk bar and I saw another bar being worked on near Branded. Does anyone have any new info?

The Australian restaurant is being worked on (near Nick's barber shop). There is also a site two doors down from Pequena, but I have no idea what it will be. I think the only yuppie amenity lacking on Vanderbilt is a Thai restaurant.
-
Most of the bodegas have now gone upscale, and turned into places that sell fresh produce.
Only one classic yellow awning bodega is left.

I do not expect any Dollar Stores either.

-
Yes, I heard it and then had it confirmed by one of the guys behind the counter.
-
Sunburnt Calf? Thoughts? Vanderbilt impossibly becoming even more of a white, cowboy hipster trend town.
-
just curious as to why pena's closing is such terrible news. we could use a good bodega, but it's pretty dirty in there and doesn't have particularly good hours. i also heard that they had enough money to buy the building if they wanted, but that they opted to move their shop to clinton hill instead.
-
in my experience, the guys who work at pena's are always nice and their prices are good. i think they're open til 11 pm which is fairly late.
-
Shame about Pena. Those guys are so nice. I buy the basics from them. Beer and TP.
Sunburnt Calf has another location on upper westside
http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-sunburnt-calf-new-yorkedit - Found their site http://moolifegroup.com/
not sure what to make of it. Don't want to judge it before it opens but seems like something that will be popular once the stadium crowds appear.thoughts?
-
Food looks pretty good, actually. Plus, the main drink special will definitely appeal to the drunks amongst us (of which there are many). I doubt we'll have to wait for the arena for this place to succeed.
-
Sunburnt cow/calf/bondi road are all good.
Its not a hipster hangout though, its an aussie bar. Pretty decent food too even though I'd consider it more of a watering hole/college bar.

I looked at that spot a few days ago and concluded that a medium to high-end, kitchen accessory store would be profitable there.

I agree, whynot. I would shop at such a place, especially if they sharpened knives.

Things that are not, not going up on Vanderbilt...an artisanal mayo shop. I'm calling the top.

For the first time in recent Brooklynian history, I am speechless.
Maybe chefs will shop there?
Maybe it will be gone as fast as the frozen yogurt place that was closed on weekends?

Ha, artisanal mayo.
Im convinced that yogurt shop was a money laundering front for the korean mafia. -

This was a response on the voice article:
"Hey guys - I get why it sounds a bit frivolous. You're going to understand when you see how TINY this place is! It's really only big enough for one thing! Hahah.. Seriously though, we are excited to come to the neighborhood. We wanted a kitchen we could call our own where we could do wild flavor science and pack orders without the hassle of moving from rental kitchen to rental kitchen. In the front will be a small retail space for customers to taste and buy. Should be fun. We are excited."
Who cares. Make some mayo!

I. Love. Mayo.
Seriously - yummmmmmm. -
As a mustard person, I demand equal time from Vanderbilt.

White people problems:
Someone stole my pony
My GPS took me through the ghetto
Rolling over my 401k is so annoying
My coop board won't let me install a dish washer
People are giving me grief about opening up an artisanal mayonnaise shop -
please add:
Having to cross Flatbush for my favorite locavore Bloody Mary Mix
but this is excellent news! i love to hear that we are getting new businesses in the neighborhood: facades freshen up and the street gets a little cleaner. the hair salon/bar/restaurant/hair salon/bar/restaurant thing was getting a little old, even for a devoted hair doer/drinker/eater such as myself. and if they actually sell fresh roasted coffee beans, i'll be there weekly!

Maybe the mayo place will attract an upscale kitchen shop.

Belgian Fry shop hopefully
-
Could you buy a sub sandwich locally and then bring it to him to get a schemer of mayo?
Could I ask him to stock a variety of mustards for this purpose?

Gah! I just heard that the guy from Plan B is taking over one of the spots across the street from him to open another place. Not sure if it's the Forest Floor or the Allstate place but jeez! I was really hoping for something that's not another bar.
I live on that street. In retrospect I would totally love a condiment shop of any kind instead.
-
I've also heard that the old Plumbing place between Soda and the vintage shop has some fancy restaurant guys attatched to it now too. Anybody know details?
-
Is that the place with the really skinny windows and brick facade?
I thought it was beeper repair shop.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/27/nyregion/27beeper.html?scp=1&sq=pager%20repair%20prospect&st=cseThat space would make for a cool high end sushi spot

Never heard of the beeper guy. That was a good read, thanks! I would love good sushi but my dream would be a good butcher or fish monger.
-
I second that dream of a fish monger on Vanderbilt.
-
Joyce's bake shop actually used to be fish store back in the day. up until 2006 I think.
-
Yup. The closest places for fish is now the expensive Natural Land on Flatbush.
Compare supermarket (located in the former hospital complex in CH), also has fish, but is sort of hike.
The Green Market also has fish, but is only open on weekends

A fish store would be great! I think it would do well.
-
We usually go to Brooklyn Fish Camp or Ocean Fish Market on 7th in Park Slope. They both seem to have a great selection of fresh fish, but it's quite a hike to get there from PH.

They are open -- limited menu right now (only 3 starters and 4 entrees for dinner last night) but said they'll be fully up and running soon. They have a nice big garden out back as well.

I want the Mayo Store to have an opening with Marty Markowitz and a Caribbean steel drum band marching down Vanderbilt
-
The last time that happened in the neighborhood, the steel drums were accompanied by almost naked Soca dancers.
We should tell Marty NOW, that he may not dress as an almost naked Soca dancer.
While the opening of a mayo store is big news, it is not worth damaging our eyes.

Jack Krohn approves of naked Soca dancers!
