Commentors on Brownstoner have called Lincoln Place between Underhill and Washington "one of the worst locations in the PH." I wondered what people here thought of that block (not looking for suggestions about other "worst" places, just a discussion of this particular location). Here's the B'stoner thread: http://bit.ly/aQ7nDS

I've lived on that block for about three years now and haven't had an issue other that the occasional street bbq that runs a little late and loud. I have trees outside my window. A short walk to the botanical garden and park. The majority of the people on the block are friendly. Sorry we all can't live in a brownstone on a street lined with baby stores and overpriced produce.

-
When I first moved to the area (around 2002), locals who we befriended used to refer to that block as the "gauntlet". When Sepia opened, the owner recommended not walking down the gauntlet if you were leaving drunk and it was late. That was a long time ago. I'd say it isn't really problematic anymore. Not for at least the last two+ years. If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

and in close competition was St. John's between Underhill and Washington, known as "Crazy Lane". ....both blocks have improved over the past few years. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Glad to read these comments. I was mostly concerned about the drug dealing references and the comments that it was unsafe to walk here at night.
-
As long as you keep your wits about you - you're good. Just don't go running down the street drunk waving your new iPhone.

That block is a shit sandwich.

Remember, the more bread you have, the less shit you have to eat!!!

Oh, I didn't say there was no dealing going on there. Just that the block was only marginally dangerous compared to what it was several years ago. Dealers are certainl still present... they've never bothered me, and I've never bothered them. Just a friendly head nod or greeting every now and again, and its always been reciporcated. If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

The change in the last couple years has been positive. It's been a long time - maybe three years - since we've been woken up by late night screaming and fights or partying. One of our neighbors walks his dog after 11 pm and says it's a safe block. Perhaps the drug dealing is less obvious but he's never seen it.

problems with dealing drugs is there would be eventual shootings and turf wars.Fight white guilt and injustice by smoking tax free guilt free Reservation Smokes or go gamble in a Native Casino.
I like to stick it to The Man, The Man happens to be Liberal in NYC(power Structure). -
Eventual? There have been, numerous times over the years. Particularly on the Underhill side of things in the last two. But this particular block is still much improved in recent years as compared to former. If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

correct. In my recent memory (aka within the last 4 years or so), on Underhill: there was a shooting by teenagers. guy stabbed near corner of Lincoln and guy killed near corner of St JohnsFor better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

whynot_31 » there was a shooting by teenagers.
For this one, you mean when shots were fired across the street from the Underhill Playground and then the guy ran into one of those houses on Underhill, right, or is this a different one? -

The one I'm thinking of: Teenagers were located between Lincoln and Underhill, and fired a gun at teenagers near St. Johns. I don't think anyone got hit, they were too far away. It was a few summers ago....For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Subject: narrow street / hill configuration theory
walked down that block the other night and not to get all feng shui but it's a tight block -- buildings close to each other from one side of the street to the other -- compared to other blocks, which is part of what might make folks feel uneasy. plus strange hump in the road that means you can't see down the block, the dealers on the corner, the asshole liquor store with the captain morgan statue outside on the corner, etc. which is not to say worst block, or not improving. worst block IMHO would go to st john's b/t washington and underhill cuz of the shooting/murder there last summer just after michael jackson died, or perhaps one block east on st. john's where there's that crazy late open air dance party thing on the weekends next to the fire house that makes my friend crazy when we have coffee the next morning. -
oh please this block is fine. so is st johns bw underhill and wash. nice buildings and clean sidewalks.
-
both have improved a lot ....seems one of them is having a multi building stoop sale this weekend (somethng that might not have happened a few years ago) http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=58381For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

if "worst block" means "ugliest block," it's gotta be one of those just south of Atlantic b/w wash and underhill

Don't discount the "temporary" destruction by Ratner. ...aka Pacific St the entire length between Vandy and FlatbushFor better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
true, whynot. i'm not over there too much.

Really which one because I happen to think that they are all pretty nice. -
>or perhaps one block east on st. john's where there's that crazy late open air >dance party thing on the weekends next to the fire house that makes my friend >crazy when we have coffee the next morning. I am glad somebody brought this up. What is the deal with this? How is it allowed to go on? I am assuming this is the same location that brought us the unbelievably, unbearably loud music that went from 7:30 until after midnight on the 4th of July?

hi there
I know this is an old thread-- but I am hoping to get some fresh opinions on this block now after two years? Anyone have any insight to how the block has changed.. or not? I am considering moving into one of the buildings close to the Underhill corner. How is the noise factor for the most part, if you allow for those loud dance parties I have heard happen a couple times a year that rock the hood? If I am alert and not waving my iPhone around how wary should I be coming home from the subway after dark walking down the block? I am a woman. Am a little concerned after reading about the rash of violent activity that has happened in the neighborhood over this year. How do you guys who live on Lincoln or St Johns/Underhill area feel about that? Do you feel it was just some unfortunate isolated incidents or that there is a serious random crime presence? Do you know if any of the buildings on the block have been burglarized in the past few years? Any advice or feedback is very welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

I've lived on this block for 8 years now (and other areas in the neighborhood before that). I routinely walk around after dark and walk to and from the subways late at night. I don't pull out my phone at night at all though. The noise level really depends on what your windows face and whether they are on a loud courtyard/alley or not - it really depends on the location. For example, my kitchen windows face onto a courtyard that is shared by another building and, from what I can gather, a bevy of pre-teen girls live in that building.. they routinely sing along to Rihanna or whatever, but it doesn't bother me. On the other side of my place, it's almost always quiet, but we can sometimes hear music from St. Johns. It also depends on your floor.
As far as Prospect Heights goes, this is one of the blocks that will most likely change the least because it is so long and dense, and is pretty much just big multi-unit buildings. I've seen some changes in my section, but mostly it's just fewer people hanging on stoops (which didn't bother me before anyway). In my opinion it's actually sometimes safer than more remote/brownstoney blocks because there are usually people around, it's well lit, and there are businesses on both the Underhill and Wash sides that are open late at night. It's obviously less attractive, but that has more to do with the (also big, multi-unit) landlords that run the block - many of whom, by most accounts, do the absolute bare minimum necessary to collect their checks.

Hi Jarvis-
Thanks so much for your thoughtful response. The apartment I am looking on is on the 4th floor and faces the street- so I guess there will obviously be some noise level from that, but maybe because its higher up it won't be too bad. I see what you mean about this block taking a long time to change because of the way it is laid out. Like you, I actually like more people hanging out outside (well haha not lurking), I agree that makes things more comfortable and feel safer. And I think that if I come home at night from the Underhill side past Bar Sepia and the restaurant things should be just fine. I am curious about any feedback on the landlords? The apartment I am looking at is being renovated (I actually looked at a couple apts in the two buildings- 272 and 296 Lincoln. Any info on those in particular? They are being rented by Meridian Properties. thanks again

I concur with Jarvis.
I have lived on EP for the last 9 years, and my building has experienced consistently less noise each year from the buildings on Lincoln. ....Those of us who live on EP, of course, never make noise...
Here's some context: On a 1 - 10 scale of wimpyness, I give myself a 7. Wherein, 1 = most wimpy, 10 = least wimpy.
As a result this context, from 2003 - 2007 when I walked my dog at 11 PM, I rarely (if ever) walked around the block that is EP, Underhill, Lincoln, EP.
Now (post 2007), I walk my dog around that block pretty regularly, probably once a week.
I haven't seen someone I suspect to be a blatant lobby-based drug dealer since at least 2009.
The litter is for the most part, gone.
With the exception of July 4 and Memorial Day weekend, the speakers are no longer placed in the windows, blasting music out to the street.
Welcome to the neighborhood; see you at Sepia.

Hey thanks Why not. Thanks for the reply. Sounds great and I am now looking forward to moving to the block. Thank you for the welcome.
Yes, and actually I used to live on Carroll Street in the slope near the park, and I would hear the partying going over holiday weekends- so on those days and the parade there really isn't any getting away from it if you are anywhere within a couple miles I think.
-
I am (hopefully) moving into a co-op on the Washington side of Lincoln Place and while I'm aware that the block has its share of section 8 housing and seems to support some dealing, I never got any bad vibes while walking, night or day. I was asked if I wanted to buy weed and someone liked my haircut! It seems like Cheryls, Sepia and now this Bar Corvo spin off on Washington/Lincoln will bookend yuppification for better or worse.
-
I also think that the Lincoln PL / St Johns end of PH has so many "natural" advantages. (subway access) The nice new Median makes Eastern Parkway even more grand and easier to access the Cultural institutions and vice versa... The visitors might make it down to PH. That fancy glass condo building...

Hi LaddHalsey
Yes the couple times I have walked down the street it was noticeable that a couple people said hello and were friendly. This does not happen that much in the Slope where I have lived for while, people are often so busy navigating their double decker stroller setups to smile. I was psyched to see Bar Corvo over there on Washington too- AldiLa is great. Its nice to see that and also see the jerk chicken over the counter place next door. It is so close to subways too-, I agree and hope Eastern Parkway will look better soon and be easier to cross, anyone know when that construction is scheduled to end?

I have lived here for 35 Years and I do appreciate the improvements in the noise level so I can hit the books and create art without worrying about stray bullets coming in through the window. Please don't get all huffy about "drug dealing" because plenty of white people smoke weed last time I checked and since it is STILL illegal one must resort to the local drug dealers to score. I have no use for snooty restaurants that charge a lot for skimpy portions, and have rude service to boot. We used to put the speakers in the windows to blast Reggae music back in the 1970s when Reggae was golden. Now I just annoy my downstairs neighbours.
