Never had a problem and I really like the neighborhood. $1,700 seems pretty pricey to me. But then again its a fully furnished short term lease. You can easily take the 3 to Clark Street and walk over to DUMBO from there. The ads says there is monthly fee. Make sure you try to negotiate that down if you can.

yup.

I think part of the problem is the WIDP has about a million people who spend the day along about a three mile route (Utica to GAP), whereas the 1/2 marathon has about 25,000 people who spend a few hours dispersed over roughly 13 miles. ...more time is spent at the start and end, of course.

As a result, the latter may have less total pee to collect, and easier logistics in collecting it.

This summer I will be doing a summer course in New York at the Miami Ad School (located in Dumbo near the Brooklyn bridge). I'm looking for a place to stay during those 3 months, but as an international student (I live in The Netherlands) it's quite hard to exactly understand where it's safe to life and where it's not. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Currently I'm looking at 2 appartments (via nyurbanliving.com ):

What's this block like?

What's this block like?

Would you guys consider these apartments a good deal and in a good (enough) neighbourhood for a student? Is it easy to find transportation from here to Dumbo?

Thanks a bunch!

Really gotta visit the neighborhood and walk a bit. Being right on E.Pkwy means she wont have to walk the quieter side streets at night. Its big and well lit. More and more stuff slowly seems to be coming to Nostrand, although it has enough going on (food, little markets, etc). For bars and restaurants, Franklin is a short walk, and with a bike or subway, you'd be to other places in minutes. Plus you'd be short-ish distance to the park, museum, botanical garden, whatever.

I think if she saw the size/condition/price of manhattan apartments and what you apparently can get on E.Pkwy, she might change her mind.

Although, there are plenty of people who are happy paying higher prices for less space and crazy amount of noise just to live in the middle of places like the East Village. You only live once, and maybe want to experience it for a year or two. I did, and then made my way to Park Slope, and now own in Crown Heights and LOVE it. I like the easy access to everything but with more of a neighborhood feel, and better prices....and i can finally sleep at night.

But you know how important it is to have clear goals and action steps for your business to succeed. This workshop is designed just for you! Instead of staying stuck and frustrated, how about having fun while moving forward with the Right Brain Business Plan 1-1/2 day workshop on June 7th & 8th, Friday night 7-9:45PM and Saturday 9AM-4:45PM in Brooklyn.

This interactive workshop is based on the bestselling book The Right Brain Business Plan by author/coach Jennifer Lee and led by licensed facilitator & artist, Karen Friedland. * Numbers numb you out
* AND you’d be a heck of a lot happier planning your business in the same intuitive, authentic, and expressive way that you live your creative life (yes, indeed, it can be that fun and fulfilling!)

You get the following (and much, much more!) from this workshop:
- You're going to be very close to the subway if that's a selling point, and that makes late night walks/commutes easier and safer. EP is well-lit.
- Send your roommate some of the Brooklynian threads where we're chatting about coffee shops and bars the entire time. If the locals are talking mostly about where to eat and not how to leave/hide, that's gotta say something?
- Curbed/Brownstoner articles about real estate prices/gentrification? So many of these businesses wouldn't be moving in if they didn't know they had a client base, and many wouldn't have the client base if it wasn't safe.

Are you both able to visit before moving in? Or are you asking your roommate to agree to an apartment without visiting? That's a tough situation, even if the apartment's amazing. At any rate, some people never really get comfortable in the area and let past prejudices/events/crime rates color their current perceptions. I had a friend that ended up moving to the Upper East Side even though she loved a 1BR here in Crown Heights. She admitted it felt safe, but she just couldn't get over the area's past reputation. Oh well.
