I think you did.
A large strange dog, off leash, with big teeth can be fearful.
But the dog punked you.
If he wanted your dog as a meal, there was nothing you were going to be able to do about it. The fact that your dog is still with you tells me that the dog in question is not a viscous animal towards humans. Instead of trying to knock you down, it would have just taken your legs out. I cannot say what it would have done to your dog, but probably wanted to sniff it out of curiosity. You kind of made it a prize for him with what you described holding him up in the air over your head jumping around shreaking.
Might I suggest, learn how to speak aggressively towards other animals, and to not show them fear. As soon as you started screaming, the dog was in it for the fun. Carry a walking stick, so next time you can whop him on the nose if he gets too close.
Unless a human is mauled and bleeding out, don't count on the cops coming.
Making false reports, embelishing stories, and witch hunting won't do anything for you or your karma.
happy new year
and remember, all dogs go to heaven....

There's a known drug building across from my office here in Crown Heights and there are a few pit bulls in that building. I'm sure they're used for "protection" if you get my meaning. And that may be the reason that these neighbors have one but nothing can or will be done until there's a real crime committed.

Now I understand that this is a complex issue involving police department priorities, budgets, cuts, etc. etc.
But I also can't help noticing that it's just this type of a careless attitude that allows good neighborhoods to go down the drain: good neighborhoods where people live with their families, send their kids to school, and expect to be able to go for an after dinner walk in relative safety.
After my contact with this dog's owners I am left wondering, "why do these people need to keep such a dog in a small apartment with no balcony or other outdoor space?" After my contact with this dog and the people who may or may not have been its owners I am also 100% certain that this dog was not simply an unruly pet. None of the people who I spoke to ever referred to the dog by name or attempted to comfort it by petting it. The dog made no effort to greet any of them as beloved pets do. This dog didn't even show any signs of being comforted by their presence or even recognizing them. The building in which witnesses claim they live has no balconys or other outdoor space. All this leaves me wondering, "why do these people need to keep such a dog?" Now if the police take a few moments to simply pay attention to the concerns of the neighbors, who made up most of my witnesses, and of course me, they may just uncover something which can not only save the next person who encounters this dog from being mauled but also something big happening within a radius of 4 blocks from 2 large elementary schools.

The dog was on a leash but the lady walking him was so small she was not able to hold the dog. The dog was obviously not trained to respond to her either. As for the police, to me it seems as if the least they could've done is at least take a statement, from both sides, check on the dog's ownership, living conditions, whether there are small children in the home as they may be in danger, etc...and if they are not going to do that to tell me so when I called 911 so that I don't wait 41/2 hrs for them.

Tell them you suspect dog fighting since this dog went after yours in such a determined manner. It indicates it may have been trained to do so. At the least it will be a report on the record. This was a horrible incident. I also think the flyers are a great way to go forward so you're not completely powerless.

Psycho-ologist, Pitbulls, like most dogs, can be trained to be aggressive however they are inherently a gentle, tolerant breed. They used to be known as the Nanny Dog because they were so good with children before being co-opted by tough guys. By supporting BSL, would you also ban all dogs that have historically been involved in violent past times? This would mean also banning Boxers, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Bull Terriers for example.

Honestly I find people who don't want to train dogs, for the most part get little dogs. I am far less afraid of getting bit by the average pitbull held on a proper leash by someone who can control it than a small dog on an extended leash.

I am fully against BSL but there are times I feel unsafe around other dogs and that almost always occurs when the dog is not harnessed properly. NYC law states a dog's leash must be no longer than 6 feet long on the city streets. (Can be longer in parks). I want this law and having a dog totally off leash to face harsher penalties. It would also be best if it were harder to get a dog. But that's an argument for another day.
