Spurred ahead by the insistent and consistent need for children's healing in the wake of Sandy, the Art Relief Caravan Project launched their photography workshop in the Rockaways. As the sessions draw to a close on Sunday April 28, the young participants will be celebrated with a display of their photographs and artwork for the public. Meet these delighful and earnest young 'artists' - and also their parents and celebrated photojournalist Ron Haviv who mentored the young artists in this process.

Taking place on April 28, from 3pm - 5pm, this special production, which will be held at Smallwater - a large airy Rockaway Beach house currently being used as a local hurricane relief headquarters - will be open to the public. Food and drink will be served.

About the workshop:
Guided by the award-winning photo-journalist Ron Haviv and the caravan project team of art therapists, young teenagers from communities that were adversely effected by Hurricane Sandy learned how to frame their experiences, both physical and emotional. Photos of their external realities are being printed and layered with painted expressions of their internal worlds, thereby giving expression to their fears and dreams in order to find both hope in the future and solace in the present.

Ron Haviv:
Award-winning photojournalist Ron Haviv has produced images of conflict and humanitarian crises that have made headlines around the world. Haviv is a co-founder of photo agency VII, that is dedicated to documenting conflict, both violent and non-violent, to produce an unflinching record of the injustices created and experienced by people caught up in the events they describe. His images have been published by Audobon, Business Week, Details, Fortune, Newsweek, New York Times, New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Time, and many more.

Kolot Chayeinu is a 20-year-strong progressive, independent congregation in Brooklyn that is known for its warmth and openness, commitment to diversity, social justice work and for a loving and spirited wrestling with Jewish tradition; as Kolot’s mission statement joyfully declares: “[Kolot is] where doubt can be an act of faith.” To celebrate the congregation’s 20th year, Kolot will debut a new “Talk the Talk” annual lecture series, that will bring prominent thought leaders and artists to the congregation each year to speak about contemporary Jewish life in America, Jewish history, politics and culture.

About Tony Kushner:
Kushner's best known work is Angels in America, a seven-hour epic about the AIDS epidemic in Reagan-era New York, which was later adapted into an HBO miniseries for which Kushner wrote the screenplay. His other plays include Hydriotaphia, Slavs!: Thinking About the Longstanding Problems of Virtue and Happiness, A Bright Room Called Day, Homebody/Kabul, The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism With a Key to the Scriptures and Caroline, or Change. His new translation of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children was performed at the Delacorte Theater in the summer of 2006, starring Meryl Streep and directed by George C. Wolfe. Kushner has also
adapted Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan, Corneille's The Illusion, and S. Ansky's play The Dybbuk. His collaboration with the late great illustrator Maurice Sendak included an award-winning children’s story-book adaptation of Brundibar.

He co-wrote the screenplay for the Steven Spielberg film Munich and is the subject of a 2006 documentary feature, Wrestling With Angels, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Kushner’s highly acclaimed screenplay for the Spielberg film Lincoln was built on an adaptation of historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals:The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Katz was the only full time American correspondent in the country when the devastating earthquake hit on January 12, 2010. He stayed in Haiti for another year to document how Haitians fared in the aftermath, and the progress of the huge international effort to rebuild.

In his new book, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster, Katz reveals the pain and perseverance of Haiti’s courageous people, uncovers how the relief effort went astray, and how international aid can become smarter.

The book exposes some disturbing and surprising evidence about why aid doesn’t always make it to the right place. Katz delves into the impact of emergency aid, the tent cities which have become an icon of Haiti’s struggle to rebuild, and why the overwhelming amount of international pledges still fell short in the face of such widespread need.

Jonathan Katz is the 2010 recipient of the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism and the 2012 winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award for this book. He wrote for the AP for seven years and routinely appears as an expert on Haiti for television and radio, with interviews on ABC News, BBC World Service, NBC Nightly News, NPR, CBC Television, and Democracy Now.

Come join us for a discussion with Katz as he shares his experiences working in Haiti. The discussion will be moderated by Jocelyn McCalla, former Executive Director of the National Coalition for Haitian Rights, and of the New Jersey Immigration Policy Network, and Advisory Board Member of Human Rights Watch/Americas.

After working and investigating the individual journey within a large community of performers for so many years, Mariangela López is going back to her own body as an attempt to understand her own ideas from her own physicality and inner world. She is using the power of the group as a catalytic energy that will guide her through this voyage. In this process she is transposing the relationship of the group and herself; how can they be present in the solo performer? How can she become a vehicle and a mirror of their own dreams and ultimately find the ritual that allows total exposure to achieve body/mind emancipation?

From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 is a sequel to the 2009 hit show, Requiem for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008. Even before we knew the outcome of the 2012 election, there was a vital need to reflect on how artists had responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Obama’s election highlighted racial discourse in various ways: contentious debates about a “post-racial society”, racist attacks by the Right, conflicting and ambivalent responses from the Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, achievements, and disappointments that his term has had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama’s presidency has raised.
