ABOUT JESSE PHILLIPS-FEIN
Jesse Phillips-Fein grew up and is based in Brooklyn, NY, where she choreographs, teaches dance, and produces shows and community events to engage the performing arts in political dialogues. Require for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008 marked the end of the Bush era by celebrating how artists responded to the policies of the Bush Administration while encouraging continued action for justice. Hosted by Shanté Paradigm, the evening featured performances in dance, music, and poetry on themes including 9/11, the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, gay marriage, Hurricanes Katrina & Rita, and the now evident disastrous effects of debt-driven consumerism. The pieces move beyond simply bashing President Bush and heralding President-elect Obama. Instead, they provided reflection how we survived and commemoration for those who didn't, critical thought about the role of artists in activism, and information about how to become involved in local organizations that are working on issues of social justice. Artists included: Alexandra Beller, Tara Betts, Sabrina Chapajiev, Drastic Measures, Guta Hedwig, Remi Kanazi, Rachel Lane, Sapphire, Paul Sigh, Spiritchild & Gina Young.

Without knowing the outcome of this November election, there is still need to reflect on how artists have responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Through celebrating what artists created, we can discuss the new challenges for political debate and presidential critique that Obama's term brought. Obama's election highlighted racial discourse, from contentious debates about a "post-racial society", to racist attacks in the popular media, stifled response from the political Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, and disappointments, that his term had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama's presidency raised.

and of course most importantly.......

MORE BANDS BEING ADDED: Adding more to the roster every day as we jury through the over 250 applications. All bands' music can be heard on their band page at BKIndieFest.org. Here are a few highlights:

Adam Levy is an accomplished guitarist and singer. He is perhaps best known for his work as the featured guitarist in Norah Jones’ Handsome Band, playing on her breakout 2002 disk “Come Away with Me,” and subsequent followups. In addition to Levy’s skills as a player, he is a gifted songwriter, having penned songs for a number of artists including Jones as well as releasing several of his own critically-praised albums. Adam is currently writing and performing his own songs.

My Glorious Mess: Not just another Brooklyn band with an impossibly cool name, co-writing partners in crime, Joseph Blaise, Ambyr D’Amato and Paul Vazquez are breaking through the noise with a sunny new brand of electro pop/rock you will not soon forget. The band has tapped into a catchy, upbeat sound that fuses together their collective histories of (serious) classical music, classic rock ‘n’ roll, and chamber-style pop with modern pianos, big guitars and an electronic beat-driven twist.

The genesis of DEDE (Dede Reynolds and Tim K) was a conversation under a Californian Meyer Lemon tree. The arc of the conversation took a sudden turn upon mentioning the music of Serge Gainsbourg & a shared love of 1960’s fashion, Nico, Exotica, Francois Hardy. The duo began the first of many marathon writing and recording sessions and combined the hyper simplicity of the modern music palette with an indie sensibility. DEDE’s music instantly was a stark contrast of a girlish voice with a dark and beautiful post-rock backdrop. The sounds of 60’s and 70’s keyboards melted with modern drum sounds and a feminine pure voice.

WHY WE'RE DOING THIS - SOME BACKGROUND:

Why should such a music-oriented city rely solely on CMJ - the annual showcase of musicians from all coasts and spanning 50 or so bars - when there's a hugely thriving local scene here, screaming to be heard outside the confines of the internet? Why not a festival where fans and musicians can meet and collaborate, all at one amazing venue? Where it's okay for amped up mainstage sets and acoustic sideshows to mingle? The main focus of this Festival is on celebrating the local independent scene and uniting it's elements to create an even stronger and more dynamic artistic exchange, as well as offering heightened visibility and a broader audience to participating bands

And it has started to buzz already, with a number of musicians already signed on, and more applications coming in as the word gets around. Special guest performers will be announced down the road, as well as various other programming thrown into the mix. Littlefield - actively supportive of this event and its mission - offers the opportunity of programming on 2 stages, in a gorgeous warehouse-turned-club space, with a full bar, sound system, and just a few blocks from the subway.

Miller will be making this an annual event, and will be using the Fest - and its website as a guide - to launch a long range plan to organize local touring circuits in and around the Northeast. "These tours will showcase a handful of the Festival's artists. We'll provide bands with a cost-effecive method of touring in the same cities 4 - 5 times a year so as to effectively build their following in multiple markets."
