Love|Fortè’s work is rooted in movement/culture of the African Diaspora through bodies that intentionally and habitually hold a distinct language specific to their culture as African American women. This movement is rooted in named forms such as Be-Bop and Hip Hop as well as unnamed, coded states of being which are specific to African American culture.
Memory Withholdings grew out of a year-long study that seeks to identify hidden traces of accumulated memories among African and African descendant communities who have undergone generations of suppression. As African descendant women, they have become rooted through culture — a culture retained notably in in the preparation of food where stories upon stories are held and passed among generations over the stove and at the Kitchen table. Love | Fortè posits that in memory there are signs that demarcate a common language. They’re asking how does the captive mind look in memory, and are there stories, hopes, dreams, desires, and fears that color it’s landscape, architecture, and geography?

The Works in Progress Series continues a shared journey through the creative process by allowing these artists take their new works-in-development from the studio to the stage. This journey began with the Open Studio Series in November and culminates in the Spring performances. This is a rare opportunity to follow a work and engage its creators from the early stages through to full productions.

From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 is a sequel to the 2009 hit show, Requiem for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008. Even before we knew the outcome of the 2012 election, there was a vital need to reflect on how artists had responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Obama’s election highlighted racial discourse in various ways: contentious debates about a “post-racial society”, racist attacks by the Right, conflicting and ambivalent responses from the Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, achievements, and disappointments that his term has had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama’s presidency has raised.

Featuring BAX’s Artists-In-Residence (AIR), the Open Studio Series begins a shared journey through the creative process. The audience engages with the artists as they open the doors to their rehearsal practice. This journey continues with the Works-in Progress Series in January, and culminates in the Spring performances. This is a rare opportunity to follow a work and engage its creators from the early stages through to full productions.

We developed this series to further BAX’s core mission of supporting arts and artists in progress. To us, the journey from the initial idea to the premiere of a work is as important as the work itself. We are inviting the public to see the works of our Artists-in-Residence and Space Grant recipients as it is being created and developed.

Opening the doors to the various stages of a work’s development and sharing the journey deepens the relationships between the work, the artist and the audience. Open Studio Showings include a moderated question-and-answer period where the audience’s observations and the artist’s intentions are explored.

ABOUT JESSE PHILLIPS-FEIN
Jesse Phillips-Fein grew up and is based in Brooklyn, NY, where she choreographs, teaches dance, and produces shows and community events to engage the performing arts in political dialogues. Require for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008 marked the end of the Bush era by celebrating how artists responded to the policies of the Bush Administration while encouraging continued action for justice. Hosted by Shanté Paradigm, the evening featured performances in dance, music, and poetry on themes including 9/11, the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, gay marriage, Hurricanes Katrina & Rita, and the now evident disastrous effects of debt-driven consumerism. The pieces move beyond simply bashing President Bush and heralding President-elect Obama. Instead, they provided reflection how we survived and commemoration for those who didn't, critical thought about the role of artists in activism, and information about how to become involved in local organizations that are working on issues of social justice. Artists included: Alexandra Beller, Tara Betts, Sabrina Chapajiev, Drastic Measures, Guta Hedwig, Remi Kanazi, Rachel Lane, Sapphire, Paul Sigh, Spiritchild & Gina Young.

Without knowing the outcome of this November election, there is still need to reflect on how artists have responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Through celebrating what artists created, we can discuss the new challenges for political debate and presidential critique that Obama's term brought. Obama's election highlighted racial discourse, from contentious debates about a "post-racial society", to racist attacks in the popular media, stifled response from the political Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, and disappointments, that his term had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama's presidency raised.

Saturday, January 29 at 7:00pm - January 30 at 5:00pm

Started in 1991, YOUTHWORKS is a unique yearly opportunity for young people (ages 7- 18) to imagine, create, and perform their own original performance work at BAX.
Year after year we are amazed at the journey these young artists go through from orientation to performance.
First, the young artists organize their ideas and figure out ways to get them out of their head and into a performance setting. The artists continue by finding form to their work, and wrap up by working on their performance skills and adding production elements like costumes and lighting. Professional artists work as coaches to guide these aspiring young artists through this 8-week creative process that begins in the BAX studios. These coaches volunteer their time and assist the young artists by giving feedback, asking questions and supporting these original works.
Past performances have included plays, dances, poetry in performance, original songs and a movie short. Pieces have been solos, group pieces and have even included a father/daughter collaboration!
The culminating performance is fully produced (with lights, sound and stage manager) and takes place in our theater space.
