The official word:

“‘Our CSA’s mission is to ‘make fresh, healthy produce, direct from the farmer available and accessible to any Central Brooklyn resident, regardless of economic status,’ said Joel Berg, the Coalition’s executive director.

In addition to fresh, organic, affordable vegetables, the Central Brooklyn CSA will once again be offering an optional fruit share to its members. Each member receives a ‘share of vegetables:a full share will feed 3-4 people and a half-share will feed 1-2 people depending on your typical diet. We only have a limited amount of shares available for everyone, so don’t wait to purchase your share.

To ensure that our shares are affordable for everyone, we offer flexible payment options for low-income households, and SNAP (formerly known as ‘Food Stamps’) benefits are also accepted to purchase vegetable and fruit shares….

This year the Central Brooklyn CSA will be partnering with Windflower Farm, a small organic farm in Valley Falls, located in the Taconic Hills between the Hudson River and the Vermont border.” The shares will be available for pick-up at Hebron Seventh Day Adventist Church, at 1256 Dean Street at the corner of New York Avenue, and members will be able to pick up their shares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

The deadline to purchase shares in full is April 19th. Contact details:

Currently it is the freezing cold middle of winter and the last thing on your mind is spring veggies ...Or maybe because because we are in a deep freeze you are dreaming of fresh healthy plant food!
Our winter days are spent looking through seed catalogues at all the exciting things we want to grow this year... (Some new additions will be sweet potatoes, strawberries, additional melon varieties, and a more colorful and extensive collection of heirloom tomatoes...yum!)

Common Hands Farm delivers fresh farm shares to members who pick up at numerous locations in Columbia County, as well as Brooklyn Boulders located on 3rd ave and Degraw in Park Slope. This is a unique opportunity to directly support young farmers raising sustainably grown food, and to full immerse oneself in what it means to have a healthy, local and diverse diet. The produce in our shares is often harvested the same day as delivery-- how could food possibly taste fresher and better?

Something that consumers don't often know is that CSA members that are able to sign up early in the winter months, are immensely valuable to farmers who are trying to buy crucial things like seed and equipment for the coming year.

We work hard to make our CSA manageable, working with feedback from our members we have allowed for a certain amount of item switching so you arent ever stuck with vegetables you dont like. nobody wants that...

We are also flexible with our payment plan and people can pay us in two installments so it is less fi
nancial investment right away. Even if you cant even do that for a couple of weeks, it means most to us to know you are on board. we also work with EBT and FMNP food stamps. talk to us more about payment options by emailing us at hudsonlocale@gmail.com

We really hope you join us this year and share this offer with as many friends as you can. If not, share our endeavor with as many people as you can anyway. It takes a whole community’s support to get a new farm off the ground. We look forward to hearing from you!

I help run the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at Maple Street School in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

The CSA also offers a meat share separately from the vegetable share and I could use your help advertising it as the deadline is fast approaching.

Here are the deets:
Pick up is monthly on the second Wednesday of the month from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sterling Street between Rogers and Nostrand Avenues, 1/2 block from the Sterling Street 2/5. Subscriptions are every four months and you can sign up for the whole year at once and will be invoiced every 4 months at the start of each season. You can pay in one lump sum or pay monthly and you can order additional meats with your share.

We need at least 20 shares for them to deliver to our location, and that was not a problem last year, but since the first season doesn't have a chicken-only share, it's been harder to get people to sign up.

If people have specific questions, they can contact Karen at board@plgcsa.org.
What is a CSA, you ask?

Community Supported Agriculture. This is a program where, in partnership with Windflower Farm (located in Valley Falls, NY), Prospect Heights neighbors buy shares of fresh, healthy produce directly from the farmer.

Eliminating the middle man ensures that the money we pay goes directly to our farmer, Ted Blomgren at Windflower Farm. Supporting local organic farms supports regional sustainability. Enhancing the availability of the freshest produce in Prospect Heights for people of all income levels, bringing real, healthy food access to more people ensures that the "community" aspect of Community Supported Agriculture rings true.

Pickup Location

Members will be able to pick up their shares on Tuesdays beginning June 7th, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm, at Fountain Studios, 604 Grand Ave., between St Marks Ave. and Bergen St.

Our CSA Members will also be responsible for working two 2-hour shifts during the season. The work shifts include every member in the operation of this CSA, and are a great way to get to know your neighbors and fellow CSA members. You will receive more info about signing up for work shifts once you’ve joined the CSA.

Please join us for a fun and tasty season!
