About MWG
Movement Workshop Group (MWG) is a Brooklyn-based company of dancers, actors, and musicians who coalesce to create distinct dance theatre pieces that not only provide an evening of entertainment but also provoke thought and lift the audience to a higher more inspired psychic state. The work is collaborative, drawing inspiration from different musicians, writers, choreographers, and the performers themselves. This joining of artistic voices makes the Movement Workshop Group a unique creative force.
The company trains intensively in both dance and acting and continues to evolve a unique methodology. As active members of the New York artist community, MWG holds training workshops and classes in Graham Modern Technique, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Acting, and other forms of performance aimed toward teaching and creating new connections with fellow artists.

Love|Fortè’s work is rooted in movement/culture of the African Diaspora through bodies that intentionally and habitually hold a distinct language specific to their culture as African American women. This movement is rooted in named forms such as Be-Bop and Hip Hop as well as unnamed, coded states of being which are specific to African American culture.
Memory Withholdings grew out of a year-long study that seeks to identify hidden traces of accumulated memories among African and African descendant communities who have undergone generations of suppression. As African descendant women, they have become rooted through culture — a culture retained notably in in the preparation of food where stories upon stories are held and passed among generations over the stove and at the Kitchen table. Love | Fortè posits that in memory there are signs that demarcate a common language. They’re asking how does the captive mind look in memory, and are there stories, hopes, dreams, desires, and fears that color it’s landscape, architecture, and geography?

After working and investigating the individual journey within a large community of performers for so many years, Mariangela López is going back to her own body as an attempt to understand her own ideas from her own physicality and inner world. She is using the power of the group as a catalytic energy that will guide her through this voyage. In this process she is transposing the relationship of the group and herself; how can they be present in the solo performer? How can she become a vehicle and a mirror of their own dreams and ultimately find the ritual that allows total exposure to achieve body/mind emancipation?

Africans in Brazil created Capoeira over 400 years ago as a way to defend themselves and maintain their culture in the face of the harsh and oppressive conditions of slavery.

Capoeira is a great way to get in shape, meet new people, experience culture and build community! You do not need any prior knowledge or experience to start - classes are mixed level and open to beginners.

From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 is a sequel to the 2009 hit show, Requiem for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008. Even before we knew the outcome of the 2012 election, there was a vital need to reflect on how artists had responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Obama’s election highlighted racial discourse in various ways: contentious debates about a “post-racial society”, racist attacks by the Right, conflicting and ambivalent responses from the Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, achievements, and disappointments that his term has had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama’s presidency has raised.
