If he is fixed it is more likely he is/was a pet.

You can also put up flyers at the 2 or 3 nearest vets offices to see if anyone claims him. However I would advise NOT putting his picture up and verifying ownership by asking them to send you a pic of the kitty to match up with him as he is rather striking and you may attract collectors or hoarders.

If you cannot find his owners can you keep him long enough to find an adopter for him? As it is kitten season right now he would have a harder time finding a home so it may take longer. Do not take him to the ACC (city pound) as he will likely become ill there due to the unsanitary conditions and then be euthanized.

If you can care for him until he finds a home then I am sure several local rescue groups would be happy to assist you to get him fully vetted and adopted.

If you explain you found him and just want them to check him over to see if he is fixed and if he has a microchip they will likely not charge you anything.

There is a chance he is lost but there is a chance he is a stray in which case what are you going to do to? There are many resources available to help you get him free and low cost vet care so he can be fixed and vaccinated.

The ASPCA offers mobile clinics where you can get the cat vetted for as little as $5 if you can show proof of public assistance such as welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), disability, food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or public housing. If you do not qualify maybe a friends or neighbor can assist you.

This is the calendar with the dates for the clinic so you can find one near you: http://www.aspca.org/Home/Aspca-nyc/mobileclinic#calendar

Alternatively http://www.animalalliancenyc.org/yourpet/snprograms.htm has a list of other lost cost and free programs. The Toby Project are a great resource but they do not have as many dates available as the ASPCA.

Another option is to get a Muffins certificate which you purchase and take to a participating vet who will get your cat fixed for as little as $50. Here is the link to that info: http://www.muffins.org/spay.htm

If you can find a local rescue who will take in this kitty to find it a home and get it vetted that would be best, if you can provide the kitty with food and shelter until it finds a permanent home they will be more inclined to work with you as too many people just dump cats on their doors and they do not have room for every animal.

I will be perfectly frank about the Brooklyn ACC, if you take this cat there they will probably die. They will either be killed for temperament, space or illness. They will likely be killed with days of you dropping him off, they are filthy, overcrowded and staffed with people overburdened and under-experienced in proper shelter management.

You've done a good deed, see it through to a happy ending, not just for you and your conscience but for the life and wellbeing of this kitty.
