Love | Fortè, A Collective’s Memory Withholdings May 3rd-5th, 2013  Friday-Saturday @ 8:00pm | Sunday @ 6:00pm Tickets: $15 General | $8 Low-Income Brooklyn Arts Exchange 421 Fifth Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11215 Love|Fortè’s work is rooted in movement/culture of the African Diaspora through bodies that intentionally and habitually hold a distinct language specific to their culture as African American women. This movement is rooted in named forms such as Be-Bop and Hip Hop as well as unnamed, coded states of being which are specific to African American culture. Memory Withholdings grew out of a year-long study that seeks to identify hidden traces of accumulated memories among African and African descendant communities who have undergone generations of suppression. As African descendant women, they have become rooted through culture — a culture retained notably in in the preparation of food where stories upon stories are held and passed among generations over the stove and at the Kitchen table. Love | Fortè posits that in memory there are signs that demarcate a common language. They’re asking how does the captive mind look in memory, and are there stories, hopes, dreams, desires, and fears that color it’s landscape, architecture, and geography? <center>Please join us as we celebrate Earth Day Awareness. Tuesday April 23rd is PreSchool (ages 2.5-5) Open Play from 9:30am-12:30pm. Drop Ins welcome!! And on Saturday, April 27th from 4:30-6:00pm. Children are encouraged to wear green. The children will enjoy educational and interactive reading about saving the planet, conserving water, planting a seed to take home, face painting and a drawing contest as well! "How I can help to save the Earth" drawing contest will be judged at the end of the day for a prize of one week of summer camp. "FasTracKids / Eye Level" members will pay $1.00 entrance fee and non-members are urged to pay $3.00. We will be giving out huge discounts all day on all of our programs. Snacks will also be served. Facts about Summer Learning Loss Dear Parents: Summer is here and if you think these lazy, hazy months should be all play and no work, take a gander at the following statistics provided by Ron Fairchild, executive director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning: • All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. • On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months. Important facts: • Only approximately 10 percent of students nationwide participate in summer school or attend schools with nontraditional calendars. • A majority of students (56 percent) want to be involved in a summer program that “helps kids keep up with schoolwork or prepare for the next grade.” • Research shows that teachers typically spend between 4-6 weeks reteaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. At least 11 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 12 care for themselves over the summer months (unsupervised). What can you do to prevent learning loss? What can you do, personally, to help combat summer learning loss with your own kids? Partially based on FasTracKids and the Enopi learning and development programs, our Summer Camp Program provides lots of fun activities that will keep your kids entertained while preserving and developing their learning skills, which otherwise can be easily neglected during the short summer months. Baby & Me Music Class February 2 - March 23 Brooklyn Local musician and mom Katie Scheele will be offering an 8-week Baby & Me Music Class on Saturday mornings this winter for babies 6 weeks-1 year. The 45-minute class will be from 10-10:45am at the Gowanus Arts Building (295 Douglass St. between 3rd and 4th Avenue). The class includes singing, movement, instrumental performances, introduction to rhythm, use of small instruments (tambourines, shakers, etc.) and many other age-appropriate developmental activities.
