The workshops will educated you on TNR as well as caring for feral and stray cats. It will provide you with info on the best food to give, how to provide simple medical care without a trip to the vet, how to care for the cats in winter weather, and how to recognize if a cat would be best suited to an indoor situation and what to do about it.

It is a wonderful resource of information and you will meet a group of experience and educated caretakers throughout nyc who can help you.

If so, he has been neutered in a TNR project. The infamous black cat that crosses Eastern Parkway is no longer intact. We did a TNR project in that area last February and were able to trap him.

If they're not trying to get in your graces, odds are they're either feral, or have a nearby human family to rely on.

I saw him following one of the momma strays that follow me to be pet. She is a lovely grey and white cat with a little tortie kitten, but with the big guy following her around I fear she's going to be adding some more black kitties to the area. Jenee, would you post more details about the TNR workshop coming up? I have a good friend in a completely different area that needs to attend one. I might as well accompany her.

Is it friendly at all? I think I know that cat. He is a male and I have heard he crosses Eastern parkways sometimes. He has been spreading his seed around the neighborhood and there are two kitten offsprings by my place that I take care of.

Not sure if it is the same cat, but if you want to talk more about him or ferals, there is a Trap and Neuter workshop coming up in Bed Stuy at the beginning of December.

Thanks for feeding cats. They make my life so much more tolerable in this neighborhood.

Curious also about the other stray you mentioned, as many of the ones I used to feed scattered around the 'hood.

Does the collar look new or is it rather tatty like she's been lost a while?

Kitty may be freaked out by the other cats who she doesn't know. It's normal for her to hide out under things, just give her a quiet place to hide like a cat carrier with the door ajar and a litterbox of her own as well as her own food and water and leave her be for a few hours. Check on her a couple of times a night but let her be at her own pace. I've known friendly kitties to freak out when they come indoors and all have quieted down after a little while - some may take a day others a few weeks.

Ask the vet if she is spayed already and if not ask if they know about nearby low-cost spaying that can get done for her as she may be in heat or go into heat which would be hell to deal with. If she is already pregnant consider getting the kittens aborted as it sounds awful but there are so many kittens who a put to sleep daily in nyc as there are already not enough homes for them and bringing more into this world just means another will die in it's place which is crueler in my book.

The Humane Society on NY in Manhattan does low cost spaying as does Toby Project who had a clinic in Bed-Stuy today but have more in Brooklyn this month:
http://tobyproject.org/locations

If she is spayed, great, then its more likely she has an owner who cares for her and may even look for her. If not then she may be one of many disposable kitties you see this time of year in Bed-Stuy.

Flyers help but make sure you do not include a pic of the kitty on the flyer just a general description and then if someone responds ask them to send you a pic as this will help ward off the crazies. Also put them up at nearby pet stores and vet offices.

You can also advertise her as found on Catster, Petfinder and Tabby Tracker. Petfinder can be a bit dodgy but the others are safe enough to put up pics. You can try craigslist but you will prob just get bunchers.

I don't know if it's the fact that there are other cats in the house, but she suddenly stopped being friendly and now she's hiding under things and growling/hissing at me. I'm going to take her to the vet tomorrow to see if she has a microchip, then I guess I'll put up flyers.
