I'm looking to find a place to live closer to the Brooklyn music scene (I'm currently in St. Albans, Queens).

I'm an easy going straight male who doesn't drink, use recreational drugs, or smoke anything, so I prefer housemates without chronic substance-abuse problems, although sensible drinking is okay with me. I also eat sensibly and try to stick to a healthy lifestyle.

It would be nice to live with other musicians or creative types, or at least with people who appreciate music and the creatives. I am in search of a communal situation (the more people, the cheaper, hopefully), a barter situation, a barter for reduced rent, or just the traditional roommate or housemate arrangement if the price is right. I can't do heavy construction work or a lot of heavy lifting, but I enjoy doing moderate indoor and outdoor manual labor.

Please let me know if you're interested!

Our book- and art-filled rooms offer intimate spaces for gathering, as well as a larger area for presentations that seats up to 40 people. Rental can include all spaces (Proteus Room, Observatory, Hall of Gowanus and Reanimation Library) or some (Proteus Room, Hall of Gowanus and Reanimation Library.) Inquire now about spring and summer events, accepting bookings now.

"Think of it as a cabinet of curiosities. A walk-in Joseph Cornell box as gallery and gathering place--where antique elegance and post-industrial edge surround artifacts of unusual aesthetic interest. Through an imposing iron factory gate, down a noir-ish brick alley . . . not so much off the beaten path, as just intriguingly off-beat. A uniquely alternative destination for celebrations and ceremonies, events and gatherings, unveilings and what-have-you. A backdrop for out-of-the-ordinary occupiers. This is Proteus Gowanus. Always interesting, for those who are interested..."

Maximum occupancy is 72 persons, and absolutely no dance parties. Additional photos and floor plan available.

Curated party themes available at additional fee. Ask about what we offer! Alternative entertainment by tarot readers; poetry whisperers; other performers.

For all event venue rentals, please email us at info@proteusgowanus.org and include the following information:

*A brief description of the event, including what type of event it is and general program format (e.g., a reading, a party, a concert, etc.)

*The dates you are interested in (please include preferred days of the week)

*An estimated number of attendees

*Your technical requirements (seating, sound, lighting, etc.)

*The estimated length of your event, including set-up/load-in and clean-up/strike time.

*Your contact information -- preferably an email address where you can reliably be reached.

Thank you for considering Proteus Gowanus gallery for hosting your special Brooklyn occasion.

Each fall, Proteus Gowanus reopens its doors to visitors who venture down its “secret” alleyway to discover the treasures within. What most don’t realize is that the gallery space is available to them for extended stays should they choose to join its co-working program, Study Hall.

It is not widely known that the gallery-cum-libraries offers this alternative co-working solution. At the back end of its quiet, 19th-century alleyway, the gallery opens its doors on weekdays as a communal space for study and contemplation. Filled with art, artifacts and books, this is a milieu that inspires writers and other independent workers. This opportunity to work at Proteus in a companionable environment with like-minded others is available for just $50 a month or $125 for three months. Learn more here: http://proteusgowanus.org/study-hall/

Proteus Gowanus is also getting the word out that its galleries are available to rent for literary readings, photo shoots, product launches, and parties. In this gallery and gathering place, antique elegance and post-industrial edge surround artifacts of unusual aesthetic interest. Intriguingly off-beat, it is a uniquely alternative destination for celebrations and ceremonies, events and gatherings, unveilings and what-have-you. Learn more about space rental (as the gallery calendar permits) at: http://proteusgowanus.org/space-rental/

These two initiatives are in line with Proteus Gowanus’ mission to deepen the community’s sense of context and connection. Executive Director Tammy Pittman says, “Study Hall is an important part of what we do at Proteus. It brings in new collaborators and friends who often become part of our creative community. We also love making it possible for people to enjoy the intriguing ambiance of Proteus as a social space.”

ABOUT PROTEUS GOWANUS: Located at 543 Union Street in Brooklyn, Proteus Gowanus seeks to create an alternative, culturally rich environment designed to stimulate the creative process; a place where the boundaries between the artist and non-artist fade, where images and ideas from disparate disciplines are juxtaposed to create new meanings. Through exhibitions, programs and publications, Proteus Gowanus invites artists, writers, workers in other disciplines and community members to participate in open-ended explorations. Learn more by visiting the website at http://www.ProteusGowanus.org.
