Never had a problem and I really like the neighborhood. $1,700 seems pretty pricey to me. But then again its a fully furnished short term lease. You can easily take the 3 to Clark Street and walk over to DUMBO from there. The ads says there is monthly fee. Make sure you try to negotiate that down if you can.

This summer I will be doing a summer course in New York at the Miami Ad School (located in Dumbo near the Brooklyn bridge). I'm looking for a place to stay during those 3 months, but as an international student (I live in The Netherlands) it's quite hard to exactly understand where it's safe to life and where it's not. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Currently I'm looking at 2 appartments (via nyurbanliving.com ):

Kingston ave / St Marks ave
What's this block like?

Nostrand ave / Eastern Parkway
What's this block like?

Would you guys consider these apartments a good deal and in a good (enough) neighbourhood for a student? Is it easy to find transportation from here to Dumbo?

Thanks a bunch!

I've lived in PLG since 1974 with no safety problems. That being said, Church Avenue is not , by any stretch of the imagination in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, not that that part of Flatbush is unsafe either. However, I would question the ethics and/or honesty of any RE person who tries to sell Church Avenue as being in PLG.

Good point. I also live in Flatbush, albeit a bit further south.

catcalled and followed by men on occasion

My late mom was very fair skinned and worked in ENY. After work, certain men would follow her until she reached the bus to get to her apartment in Starrett City.
She was understandably nervous about being followed around and grew even more fearful when they would smile at her when she boarded the bus. After all, these guys turned out to be members of the Jolly Stompers.

Eventually she realized what the following and the smile all meant: they knew she was a community activist who just wanted a clean and decent neighborhood for everyone and that their smile was a reassurance that no one would come near or menace her in any way so long as they were around.

Such is life in Brooklyn! <img src="http://brooklynian.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I am moving to New York on June 1st, 2013. I have an apartment with a roommate lined up in Greenwood Heights, but she wants to explore other areas. She is looking at an apartment about $200 cheaper in Prospect Lefferts Gardens off of Church Avenue. We will be 2 blocks from a subway stop. Is this area safe for 2 single Caucasian women in their 20s? The only reason I ask is because I see many mixed reviews all over the Internet about crime and violence. Any help/ advice would be great!

Women need to be careful late at night anywhere (whether Park Slope or Bushwick), and especially in areas where people who deal or buy drugs might be swinging through (I do not know that that's the case where you plan to live, but a couple of readers suggest that may be the case).

Try to avoid walking alone after 11pm. If you have to, be alert, walk with confidence and make sure you've got your phone handy (but not visible); pepper spray is probably not a bad idea. Don't come home drunk and teetering in heels. Which is to say, don't look like easy prey. To me, this is obvious but I know there are a lot of young women out there who think they should be able to do that and not be victimized. However, in the world we currently live in, wishing it doesn't make it so. Just be sensible and careful. Err on the side of caution.
