The second of a trio of operas called Il Trittico, Puccini’s Suor Angelica begins as a snapshot of daily life in a 17th century Italian convent, portraying a lively and diverse group of women united in worship by different life paths. The radiant Sister Angelica is adored as she emanates an aura of divinity that is felt by all in the convent; but even though she is deeply loved by her sisters, they still furtively speculate about Angelica’s secret past that she has kept hidden from everyone. Little does anyone know that the woman who knows Angelica’s secret has just arrived – and what this woman tells Angelica shakes her to her very core.

The musical force of nature Maestro Thomas Lawrence Toscano brings into vivid reality a beautifully tragic tale of one woman’s heart-breaking past, and the powerful moment of her divine redemption.

From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 is a sequel to the 2009 hit show, Requiem for W, Overture for O: Works of Conscience from 2000-2008. Even before we knew the outcome of the 2012 election, there was a vital need to reflect on how artists had responded to Obama and the political events of the past four years. Obama’s election highlighted racial discourse in various ways: contentious debates about a “post-racial society”, racist attacks by the Right, conflicting and ambivalent responses from the Left, and the differing emotions, expectations, achievements, and disappointments that his term has had for white people and people of color. From Obama to Occupy: Works of Outrage from 2008-2012 generates a space for art to be a powerful platform to engage deeply with the contradictions and questions that Obama’s presidency has raised.

Featuring BAX’s Artists-In-Residence (AIR), the Open Studio Series begins a shared journey through the creative process. The audience engages with the artists as they open the doors to their rehearsal practice. This journey continues with the Works-in Progress Series in January, and culminates in the Spring performances. This is a rare opportunity to follow a work and engage its creators from the early stages through to full productions.

We developed this series to further BAX’s core mission of supporting arts and artists in progress. To us, the journey from the initial idea to the premiere of a work is as important as the work itself. We are inviting the public to see the works of our Artists-in-Residence and Space Grant recipients as it is being created and developed.

Opening the doors to the various stages of a work’s development and sharing the journey deepens the relationships between the work, the artist and the audience. Open Studio Showings include a moderated question-and-answer period where the audience’s observations and the artist’s intentions are explored.

His work continues to be remembered on the stages of almost every regional and non-profit theater in the US. Irondale has honored his rich legacy through the creation of the M. Edgar Rosenblum Awards which are given out annually to individuals or public partners at the Irondale Center, 85 South Oxford Street, in the BAM Cultural District of Fort Greene.
The Irondale Ensemble Project, established 29 years ago, is a permanent ensemble known for its innovative theatrical productions as well a ground-breaking education programs with teachers and students in public schools, incarcerated men and women, and adolescents at risk of AIDS/HIV. The founders of Irondale, Jim Niesen, Barbara Mackenzie-Wood and Terry Greiss first met when they were hired as young actors at Long Wharf in 1977. According to Artistic Director, Jim Niesen, "Working at Long Wharf in a tremendously supportive creative environment, gave us the model of how we wanted to keep working throughout our careers. It also brought the three of us together in what clearly became, for all of us, our most important professional and personal relationship". Terry Greiss, Irondale's Executive Director said, "Jim and I have been working as a team for 29 years. Although we didn't set out to model ourselves after Arvin (Brown) and Edgar, it was an important and successful example of partnership that we were exposed to early in our careers". Barbara Mackenzie-Wood, now Head of the Acting /Music Theatre Program at Carnegie Mellon University said, "Edgar was a mentor for us all. When we started Irondale, he was always willing to give us advice or talk to our board. I think he was proud of what we created and we were always quick to acknowledge our roots”

BROOKLYN, NY – Brooklyn’s first festival to showcase the borough’s emerging artists in theater, dance, and voice will premiere this fall and features, among other cutting edge artists, the Irondale Ensemble who will be performing in their beautiful home, the Irondale Center and other venues across the borough. The Irondale Ensemble will be presenting a minimally staged, version of their spring smash “Color Between the Lines” part of the In Pursuit of Freedom project.

Originally scheduled to perform a work-in-progress of their upcoming Julius Caesar for the festival, Irondale and the creators of BEAT made the switch to revive Color Between the Lines instead. According to Terry Greiss, Irondale’s Executive Director, “Color Between the Lines is the history of Brooklyn’s abolitionist struggle, told through original company created music and based on newly uncovered history. The combination of it being a real Brooklyn story and the innovative nature of the performance style itself makes it an exciting offering for BEAT. We are thrilled that we are able to find the resources that allow us to revive it for the festival.”

When it first premiered in the spring the Huffington Post called it a “pulsing and powerful production”, and the NY Times called it “courageous and compelling” with an “energetic and impassioned” ensemble.

Brooklyn, NY: Opening the 2012/13 season at Irondale is the magnificent, intense and intelligent Butoh Electra created and performed by the highly acclaimed ensemble, The Ume Group. A “beautiful and disturbing” piece (NYTheatre.com), Butoh Electra presents Sophocles' Greek revenge tragedy as the story of a woman whose vibrant inner life is corrupted by the world of walking dead in which she lives.

The Ume Group's fresh take on this much loved classic combines glimpses of Electra's "dance of utter darkness” with impressive fight choreography and martial arts. Manifested onstage by a collection of gifted performers, this flagship physical theater piece from The Ume Group places the ensemble at the forefront of the emerging arts scene. Led by physical theatre practitioner and producing artistic director Jordan Rosin, The Ume Group is dedicated to sharing traditions and developing new work, a mission that has been clearly achieved by this groundbreaking production which has been called a "successful synthesis of classical Greek and Japanese traditions" which "enriches the myth at the piece's core” - The Village Voice.

Butoh Electra was originally developed in 2010 as part of the Lab Theatre Series at Syracuse University. It was given its first professional presentation at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2011. Since Butoh Electra in 2011, The Ume Group has contributed developmental support to several projects, including "The Glimmer" (Roy Arias Spring Theater Festival 2012), “Kriep” and "Baldy" (FringeNYC 2012).

Jordan Rosin (Creator / Producer) is a physical theatre artist, teacher, and ensemble theatre enthusiast. He is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of The Ume Group, a physical theatre ensemble dedicated to sharing traditions and developing new work. He received his B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University and has also trained at the Tepper Center for Careers in Theatre, as well as with numerous independent teachers of butoh. Directing credits include Butoh Electra (Syracuse University & FringeNYC); Mud by Maria Irene Fornés (Syracuse University); outcry: students celebrating art (Auburn Ave Theatre). He is a 2008-2009 Crown Scholar and recipient of the Josephine Abady Award for Excellence in Directing. He first conceived Butoh Electra as the culmination of an undergraduate thesis project on ensemble theatre techniques, the theories behind which have continued to shape the culture and creative process of the Ume Group's fledgling ensemble. He regularly speaks on the relationship between butoh, gymnastics, and ensemble theatre on his video blog, A Sense of Ensemble.

Brooklyn, NY: The Irondale Ensemble presents a new play, In Pursuit of Freedom, April 26 – May 26 (Tuesdays thru Saturday), an original work devised by the ensemble and developed as part of the borough’s first public history project to explore the abolitionist movement in Brooklyn. The whole project, also known as In Pursuit of Freedom will bring to life this fascinating abolition story while teasing out the relevance of the subject for contemporary audiences.

At Irondale, In Pursuit of Freedom will explore the tension between Brooklyn’s phenomenal growth during the nineteenth century based on its intricate ties to slavery, and the moral imperative towards anti-slavery activism by a small group of residents. Set in the tumultuous decade prior to the Civil War, In Pursuit of Freedom will blend real and fictional characters, who were all committed Brooklynites. The play will explore a time in this borough’s history when free African-Americans, charted a course of self-determination in order to address the everyday injustices of racism, threats of illegal kidnapping, voter discrimination, and a profound lack of legal and political equality. It was also a time when ordinary men and women, black and white, became abolitionists, in order to end slavery even as their city’s wealth depended on the Southern economy. The play will tell new stories about familiar abolitionists and recover activists who have been underrepresented by mainstream narratives. Ultimately, the play will be a venue for exploring American notions of freedom and engage with the ongoing debates of how we define freedom today.

In Pursuit of Freedom project draws on the resources and capacities of two other leading Brooklyn cultural organizations, Brooklyn Historical Society and Weeksville Heritage Center. In Fall 2013, all three organizations will unveil permanent exhibitions as part of an ambitious, historical and educational project, that will complement and add to the experience of seeing the play. The drama of the abolitionist movement is manifest in the physical environment. Many communities still meet in churches that were centers of resistance. Buildings that were once were abolitionists’ homes or meeting venues abound. The waterfront is still littered with the warehouses and other buildings that were essential for exchange and trade with the slave holding states. At twenty of these sites highly visible “markers” will be erected as permanent reminders of the history of the location to passers by. Elements of these exciting exhibitions will be displayed throughout the historic Irondale Center to offer glimpses of what In Pursuit of Freedom will become as the project moves through into 2013.
