If Ratner is providing a job for every $375,000 spent, he's doing a lot better than Obama.

However, I can't say I fault AY for building and operating their arena (and the future housing) in the most cost efficient manner.

That is not where I place the blame, that is merely where I go to see shows.

My choices seem to be: pay twice (capital plus ticket) and get to see something, or pay only once (capital) and simply get to walk by.

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20130215/prospect-heights/most-barclays-center-jobs-are-part-time-with-no-benefits#ixzz2L33jVEBs

After hundreds of millions of dollars of our tax subsidies to AY, we deserve more. Here's Norman Oder's comments on the DNAinfo article:

Norman Oder » The 2000 arena jobs, including 105 full-time jobs, are the equivalent of 1240 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, officials said last year.

My coverage:
http://atlanticyardsreport.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-many-full-time-jobs-at-barclays.html

My calculation: the average part-timer works less than 24 hours a week.

So, if they earn $11/hour, that's less than $264 a week. If $12/hour, it's less than $288 a week. If $13/hour, it's less than $312 a week.

However welcome the jobs are to people who need work, that compensation won't pay for independent housing and health insurance.

The questions are, "how much should we be willing to pay an employer who promises to create such jobs?"

"should we believe such promises are not exaggerated?"

"would the jobs have been created without a gov subsidy?"

"did we get as much as we could with the public resources we committed, and the taxes that we have exempted this entity from for decades?"

Walmart jobs.

These are not jobs you can really live on. Not jobs you can raise a family on and pay the rent on and save for a house on. These are just crap jobs that are numbing to those who have to either take them, or starve.

You do not get a piece of the American Dream on these jobs. You simply tire out. If you get a moment, read the book called "Nickeled and Dimed In America. It is eye opening.

http://atlanticyardsreport.blogspot.com/2012/11/more-hiring-at-barclays-center.html

As time goes on, the arena may develop a core group of "happy" employees, and turnover will fall.

However, the arena may decide that the mere passage of time and the "weeding out" that naturally happens when launching a new venture isn't going to be enough; the managers may experiement with increasing wages and benefits.

Or, they may simply decide that turnover is an inherent part of these entry level positions and that it isn't important to have longevity because new employees can be quickly found and trained.
