Gotham Gazette » Wednesday saw the third day of protests in Flatbush following the shooting death of 16-year-old Kimani Gray on Saturday. Gray was shot seven times in the front and back of the body by New York Police Department officers. Police officials say Gray brandished a handgun and pointed it at them. A number of community members have voiced skepticism of the official police account. Protesters clashed with police yesterday at 54th Street and Church Avenue. It isn't clear how many were arrested. The shooting has only heightened tensions in a community where police are aggressivley pursuing gangs.

Some are trying to use the precious time provided by the rain as a chance to stem what could become a growing crisis: http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Let-s-Empower-Our-Community--Attend-Our-Youth-Empowerment-Seminar-SATURDAY-.html?soid=1102557709761&aid=y0XGLH9wY5g

I actually don't think youth who engage in violence are looking for what I would call "sympathy". They are looking merely to express their anger, and they have no constructive outlet for it.

In my mind, this begs two questions:

1. Can society create ways for people of limited skills to effectively express and control their anger?

As you point out, experience tells us that the least skilled of us predictably will become violent when frustrated, confused, or simply feel that things are beyond our locus of control.

2. Although last night's attempt to let people productively express their anger and sadness by having a march and demonstration didn't seem to work, should the authorities let people assemble again tonight?

I think if I (a 44 y/o white guy), was confronted by police on the street and then pointed a weapon at them that I carried as per a concealed carry permit, I would be likely be now dead as well.

Depending upon my pasty hue and the legality of a handgun to "save me" in such a situation seems a really bad idea....

This is about teaching youth how to make constructive, thoughful decisions.

I would not make the leap that this is "the community blaming the cops for doing their jobs".

This is a relatively small subset of the community (young men) who is mourning and believes that the police should be able to cope with someone who points a gun at them, without ending their life.

“Police are supposed to be trained to disarm a child, or disarm anybody if they have a gun,” said one of Gray’s cousins, who did not give her name.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brooklyn/what_this_kin_say_teen_killed_gun_a9z4sBBWtgI4liHCq3mURI

The reality of the world is different than their beliefs.

I.E. If you point a gun at a police officer, the officer will quickly conclude their life is being threatened, and take immediate steps to defend their life.

In most situations, the officer will shoot you until you are no longer a threat. This means that they will literally shoot AT (and INTO) you, until you are unable to continue to use your gun against them. In the majority of cases, this means you will be shot until you literally fall to the ground.

As a result of this process, there is a high probability that you will die.

Water cannons have a bad stigma and history attached to them.

The mainstream media isn't reporting it as such, but last night seems to have been a well-intentioned demonstration that went awry. As a result of last night, I suspect responsible parents will conclude tonight will not be constructive either, and try to keep their teenagers home.

Calls for rabble rousers are spreading on Facebook and Twitter, and I have no doubt that a few will show up tonight to "f' with the police" and generally entertain themselves.

The police will likely have a few quick strike teams ready to take out groups who decide to "wild", a phenomena that occasionally happens...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Angry Brooklyn residents threw bottles, and left a drug store employee violently beaten Monday night, as they marched to the scene of this past weekend’s deadly police shooting, 1010 WINS reported.

The NYPD dispatched officers in riot gear to respond, and one person was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Dozens of officers stood guard in the aftermath of the protest. Police said it started peacefully, but then took an ugly turn as the crowd started to disperse.

The crowd of about 20 teens and other residents gathered at Nostrand and Synder avenues, outside the 67th Precinct police station, 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon reported. Some people screamed, and rocks and bottles were thrown, over the police-involved shooting Saturday of 16-year-old Kimani Gray.

Rocks were thrown at the windows of the police station, while garbage and bottles were thrown in officers’ direction, police said.

The crowd then headed toward the scene of the shooting, in front of a home on East 52nd Street, in East Flatbush, Rincon reported.

During the march crowd members rushed into a Rite Aid at Albany and Church avenues around 9:20 p.m., and assaulted a worker inside the store, police said. The worker was taken to a nearby hospital with a head injury, and is expected to recover, police said.

Once the crowd arrived at the scene of the shooting, emotions remained tense, 1010 WINS reported. However, City Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-45th) and Gray’s sister appealed for calm, and the crowd complied.

Some group members laid flowers at the scene, and eventually everyone went their separate ways.

WCBS 880 reported that by 9:50 p.m., the situation had calmed down. There were no reports of arrests or injuries. Police told WCBS 880 the melee was a “disorderly gathering of people” rather than a riot.

Police told WCBS 880 there were no reports of injuries or damage to property.

The one person accused of disorderly conduct was arrested at Snyder and Rogers avenues, police said.

On Saturday, plainclothes officers from the Brooklyn South Anti-Crime Patrol were walking East Flatbush when they came upon a group of young men standing in front of the home on East 52nd Street, according to police.

Police said at one point Gray pulled a gun from his waistband and turned toward the officers, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported. Officers responded to seeing the gun by opening fire, police said.

Gray was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital a short time later, police said.

Police said a loaded Rohm’s Industry .38-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene.

Gray had been arrested three times since October, police said.

Clearly, we are getting different versions of this story as it evolves. Here's a version from The Post, as of 10:40 PM:

“They poured in here like 40 or 50 of them. They pulled the registers off the counters, they flipped over everything. They punched me in the face. Several of them did, not just one [person.] It was insane,” said the store's manager, Lorenzo Evans.

At least three other people were bleeding from the face after being assaulted in the store, the sources said.

The crowd went wild on the blocks surrounding the 67 precinct station house near Church Avenue and East 55 Street, cops and witnesses said.
