I would say that the residential blocks mostly feel very safe, especially the ones with predominantly single-family homes. You definitely get the sense that the homeowners care for their property and the neighborhood. Even the larger apartment buildings didn't generally feel unsafe. I will say that right near the train station, heading east, there is a large public school with a yard that is empty at night, so there are sometimes crowds of young guys--I tried not to get off at that station alone at night for that reason. There are a few large grocery stores that mostly cater to the Jewish community (including a gorgeous new one on the corner of East New York and Kingston) and a couple other take out places and shops--but no real commercial strip.

If you are an atrractive single white woman and you are at that train station after 8pm make sure you dress conservative - I'm joking.
The area is busy enough, even late at night it is well lit. There is a mix of carribean and lubavitch (spelling) hassids demographics in the area, and neither are too happy to see yuppies around, but you'll find the carribeans will warm up to you faster if you carry yourself with integrity and manners.
That said I recently turned 30 and find myself afraid of savage teenagers of all races here in NYC (because they are not afraid of me).

The Sterling 2/5 is a lot better because of the proximity to Medgar Evers College. The Nostrand Avenue strip is very active with 24 hour bus service and east bound traffic. I personally don't like the apartment buildings off of Sterling, however all of the surrounding blocks are pretty peaceful. Parking is tough. Strangely enough Prospect/Nostrand is a safer area.

And to deny this is what she is saying is disengenuous. She tell us who she is -- twenty-something white woman; she tells us what she's not looking for 'yuppified whitesville', and she asks -- is the jungle safe enough for her.

And the fact that there is no critique of her question by those who have answered it gives this White lady the sense that she's asking a perfectly legitimate question; she isn't. The questions she asked is loaded like a crap bag with presumption, and it needs to be busted.

And this is how it will unfold: CTK will soon enough opine, referring to satistics about crime and that this woman's question is a rational one to ask. But to that I say, if she said, you know, I have looked at the crime stats of the neighborhood, and I'm wondering, is it safe? But that's NOT what she is saying. She is saying, you know, there are a lot of BLACK people who live in that neighborhood, and I am thinking of living there, is it safe?

Lady, the sooner you move here, the LESS safe it will be - FOR ME, and for those that look like me. Please, do US a favor and don't come. Keep your gentrifi-diddied self somewhere else.

The area off of Nostrand near the Sterling St stop is quieter than further north.

When I lived there, it seemed a little creepy late at night but more because of how empty it was (I was on Brooklyn Ave and Maple Street). I never ran into any issues myself and this was the only really disturbing incident while I was there:

Yes, it's another "is it safe" post. I haven't seen anything that's relatively recent (past 2 years) *and* covers this particular area, so I hope I'm not being redundant.

Anyway, I'm considering moving a couple blocks east of the 2/5 sterling stop in brooklyn. This area seems to be sort of at the edge of lefferts gardens/crown heights. Some people seem to call it wingate. I'm a white, twenty-something female. I currently live in crown heights near prospect/nostrand and feel pretty safe/comfortable there, so I'm *not* necessarily looking for a completely yuppified whitesville. But I do want to feel reasonably safe walking home at night and I'd also like to have a semi-decent grocery store nearby.

Anyone familiar w/ this area have info *from the past 2 years or so*? This nabe appears to be one of those that's changing ever so quickly, so I'm esp. interested in recent experiences.

Thanks!
