I tried not to go down to the basement/cellar too often, it always had a bad smell like something or another.

I try to avoid walking down that side, especially with my spawn, b/c it always makes us gag. Something is definitely wrong. The first time I noticed it was when oil was being delivered there and I mentioned it to the delivery guy b/c I though he had a leak or something. But it's continued to smell since.

Kerosene smells in the sewers

Ack, I was wondering if it's something like that, with the heavy rain last night I bet some buried oil tank leaked oil into the sewer somewhere on the block - thanks for the insight

Kerosene smells in the sewers

I had this happen once. Turns out that my building used to have oil heat but was converted to gas about 10 yrs. ago. When they removed the tanks they cut the pipe that leads from the street to the tank in the basement and shoved an old rag up the pipe to block it. However, they left the valve, or whatever you call it, out on the street.

So one day there must have been a new guy driving the oil truck who makes weekly deliveries to my neighbor. He got the address wrong and hooked up to my building. that rag didn't do much against the force of hundreds of gallons of heating oil. I think he realized his mistake quickly enough but not before a good amount of oil filled my basement floor and went down the drain. Luckily it's not a furnished basement and the oil didn't reach the gas boiler.

Regardless, it smelled like kerosene for weeks. I had to scrub every surface multiple times before the smell went away.

Kerosene smells in the sewers

We called 311, they said they'd look into it and never called back, it's not a gas smell, it's a definate kerosene odor, but thanks for your concern

Kerosene smells in the sewers

Subject: Re: Kerosene smells in the sewers

Kevin_on_Putnam » Hiya- has anyone noticed kerosene smells in their basement. You might want to call the gas company and ask them. I'm no expert, but what I understand is, when you smell gas, call someone right away.

Kerosene smells in the sewers

Hiya- has anyone noticed kerosene smells in their basement.
