A cop told my friend that they are leaving their lights flashing so that people who need them know where to find them. They are powered by really loud generators. </p> <p>I'm still seeing at last 5 police vehicles at a time at night and almost as many during the day. What makes it really frustrating is the way they charge around on sidewalks--it feels like it's only a matter of time before one of them runs over a jogger or dog or little kid. Instead, they do them to calm/please the public.</p> <p>For example, the police may be prevalent and have their lights on not because they think it will deter some criminal, but because it will show the local members of the citizen-police advisory board that they are attempting to stop crime: The advisory board thinks crime is easy to predict, the police know that they are being forced to participate in security theater.</p> <p>They are likely bored out of their mind. </p> <p>I hope the public's anxiety is lengthy enough for the police get some overtime before the public moves on to a new thing. It's not like they are just there, they all have their lights flashing constantly, every night. I'm fine with some safety measures but this is ridiculous in the winter. I'm mostly walking the southern end, btw. </p> <p>When the weather is nice enough for actual criminal activity to be common in the park, I can't get them to respond to anything (eg teens setting off M80 for 40 minutes straight in the woods on a dry summer afternoon). Now that it's freezing out, they are everywhere with those obnoxious lights. I see a few other dog owners, some bike commuters, and people exercising out in this weather and that's it. The teens and crazy guys that are there much of the year clear out by dark when it gets cold.</p> <p>I like to go out at night in the winter for peaceful walks with my dog and I cannot get away from the cops and their bright lights the last month or so--I could see 6 different police cars in one area the other night.
