Not much, but on the back end, we switched over to a new platform for handling the posts. Some things are in different places, but most of the functionality remains the same.
If you've got a question, click the New Topic button and start a thread!

Ewww!! Can't even preview posts any more?
Can't wait to hear the hordes of complaints tomorrow. No more # of posts listed under each user?

You can now.

Yes, bring it on!
No more # of posts listed under each user?
I think this could be done, but can I ask why it's important? Not saying it's not worth adding - I just want to get a sense for what you like about it.
I can't see why the # of posts is important, unless it's a contest
I think people have used it as a "measuring stick". Kind of helps in determining if someone just created an account here to bad mouth an establishment or a shill.
If not # of posts, maybe how long a person has been a member?
post count is useful on the mod side, for dealing with spammers. it's nice to have a quick look at how many things will need finding and deleting.
for follow up posts the text keeps getting indented further to the right with each post, so after a few responses there is only enough room for one or two words per line
This is weird. Gonna take some getting use to.
I kinda miss the little orange thing that told me people posted wince I was last in a particular thread.
how do I get to my profile setting? ....if I want to change my signature or my avatar?
That functionality is there, just subtle at the moment.
If you look at http://brooklynian.com/forum/ or any other forum/board main page...
The titles of threads with new posts since your last visit are shown in a different color blue. We've experimented with different colors and bold type instead and it gets really messy.
We can look into similar (still subtle, hopefully) status icons as you suggest since those were very helpful at a glance on the old site. Good suggestion.
Also...

Up at the top of any page you can click on your name ("Welcome, [username]") to access and edit your profile settings.
I like the multi-color-edness of the new look....
got it. I like how the site now shows everyone who visited today, not just people who are on at the moment.
If you can, please make this section show even those people who prefer to have their status hidden. It presently shows the hidden people in (xxx), but I predict you are working on this.
I.E. Folks should be able to hide that they are online presently, but it is good to show potential advertisers (and businesses who suck or are great) how many (or how few...) people visit this thing on a given day.

I am getting used to it but I notice that now when I type in the address in my address bar it connects me to here but I also get a new tab opening about hard drive errors (I use Firefox with pop ups blocked). Is this only happening to me?
Also what is the Alert me when topic is updated mean on the bottom. Every time I look at a post it shows up on the bottom checked. Does that mean I will get an email whenever anyone posts on this subject? If so is there a way to turn it off completely?
ETA - when I was notified of a reply I kept getting this message:

I was able to hit refresh 2-3 times and I was then connected.
I assume that the frame problems are among the things you are working on. They are whacky.

I'm guessing you are referring to cases where large images posted overflow underneath the layout of the site?
We'll check into an automatic resize (on page load) plug-in for images to make sure ones that are too big are resized to fit, perhaps a solution where people can click the resized-to-fit image to expand it to full size if they care to.
Or we can just add something like the following to the CSS file:
thread .post img {max-width:450px;}
mamacita » I can't see why the # of posts is important, unless it's a contest
By not showing that I have 7000 posts, I could appear briefly normal to new users. I like this.
the one other forum i post in also did a major revamp, at the end of october, and today is my last day in the office i've worked in since i moved to new york. i am being assaulted by change. i feel so lost.

Quote works now!
I do like how when I click on the last post, it takes me there ....I do not have to scroll down to the dribble I want.
HOW DO I POST FROM YOUTUBE
I WANT TO POST MUSIC AND I CANT
There's a new way to handle it for the moment. We can probably add the old functionality (pasting the HTML code from YouTube etc...) back as well.
The video below is displayed by using the following:
[video*]link[/video*]
NOTE: remove * asterisks in examples above

When we noticed it was happening earlier today we made sure that was turned off by default but it may still be in effect on an individual thread basis for anyone that posted to threads before it was turned off.
The best way to get rid of it in each thread where it's still happening is as follows:
Near the top of the page in any thread, just below the thread title is a pull-down menu that says "Subscribe To Topic."
In that pull-down menu select "Don't Subscribe."
That should prevent any further notifications and will also permanently un-check the "Alert-me" box that was automatically being selected at the bottom of the page.
But just for that thread. You'll need to do the same for any other threads you posted in before it was spotted and fixed this afternoon.
Hope that helps.
wha' happon?
I see progress was made in making some new things appear light orange
AHAAHAHAHHA
message board gentrification !!!!
ahahahaha
TEST:

Don't use the YouTube "EMBEDDED" link like before, instead copy the link only, paste here and then highlight it and click the "video" button
FYI - the board doesn't seem to like ampersands - all of the text in a post after an ampersand is ignored.
Ah, interesting. Just in the title (like a url encoding issue, since it generates a url slug) or in the text body of a post itself?
Btw, I sure do lurrrv me sum M&Ms.
***edited to add. Hmm. Any chance you might have been pasting the text in from elsewhere? Sometimes other editors alter and mess with symbols beyond their basic text forms.
In a the body of a normal post. & FF3.6... if that matters.
Ah - looks like it might just be the on-the-fly preview.
Ah, okay, I see it there. That's a definite bug with the JavaScript generating the real-time preview...it would appear to not be evaluating and escaping any characters that may subsequently be interpreted in a functional string (not content) sense.
So it's probably going on to interpret the ampersand in this case as the beginning of a string to be used in functions behind the scenes and thereby no longer echoing display in the preview anything after it as expected.
Thanks, I'll see if there's any info mentioned about this issue in support of this particular real-time preview plug-in.

I don't know... I think it's looking REALLY messy on the landing page for the neighborhood forums. Not enough differentiation between topics... just a lot of thin, spindly text. It's not immediately obvious if anything new has been posted since my last visit. All in all, a LOT more difficult to use.
^^^ some monitors, or a poorly calibrated monitor, might have a hard time differentiating between the alternating gray and blue-gray background colors of the posts/topics. On my monitor, a pretty nice one that I keep calibrated for photo editing, the differentiation is really obvious.
Here's a good place to start to see if it's just your monitor.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/78/199505398_7a45d8c43f_o.gif
Oh I can see the alternating bg colors just fine. It's more the messy layout, spacing, and font that are all combining to create a less-than-pleasant effect.
8thandPrez, as you might imagine it's mostly been back-end migration, integration, configuration (...consternation, perturbation, endless plug-ins mastur...hey where's Bob Dylan or the Temptations or REM when we need 'em
) work to-date so please note that there are plenty of interface design and style issues have had to wait for all of that to settle.
Such is the nature of volunteer projects that are advanced only as free time allows. We hear ya on the design stuff, it'll come step by step after some other primary mover issues are resolved.
Note for comparison: Everybody also complained and disliked the new site when Brownstoner, Gothamist and others relaunched (and those were paid gigs, ha). Users weighed in, improvements were made and eventually everything settled in to the usual din of activity.
In this case, we definitely welcome constructive feedback and specific ideas or suggestions and promise to address everything as best as possible as volunteer time allows.
Thanks!
What happened to "posts since last visit"? I really liked and used that feature a lot. That available on this software?
dd, yeah that was a great feature of the prior site, personalized beyond latest posts in a general sense.
Have a look at the following:
Topics with new posts
http://www.brooklynian.com/forum/view/new-posts
I haven't had a chance to check it but if it's personalized like the old one, we can make a link to it up top near the rest of the "Welcome, [username]" and other user profile -related stuff.
hey, when someone edits a prior post does the new system leave a note?
"edited 4 times, last time at 4:15."
if it doesn't, this could allow me to go back and correct my typo ridden posts while making users believe I have always been literate.
....it could also allow me to change posts to not be an idiot, and then claim at no point was I an idiot.
The old format prevented both, can this be enabled after you do the 40000000000 other things people want you to do?
can you add this bar on the bottom?
BROOKLYNIAN » FORUM » SITE ISSUES
this way I don't have to scroll to the top after I'm reading something?

In short, the current setup does not log edits or note them as before, and it would likely be nontrivial to add that (not simply a matter of installing a pre-rolled/tested plugin).
From what I have noted thus far you are certainly able to edit posts but after a time (30 min, maybe?) the whole post may be bumped down to latest instead of keeping its original position in the thread.
But please note that the above is totally untested, not confirmed. Just recalling other separate, anecdotal cases observed while testing other things.
Whatever the case, we will definitely put this on the list to investigate but I can't make any promises at this point in terms of when it may be handled in some way. I will hopefully remember to mention when it's been handled one way or another.
As for the breadcrumb navigation, that sounds like a no-brainer to repeat at bottom. I will add it to the short-term list and it will definitely be taken care of in the next few days, just subject (as other quick items are) to being tackled between other larger items on the plate.
So when ya see it, you'll see it. (hee)
Thanks for the great feedback.
Posts since last visit still exists. Link at bottom of forum. Can be made more obvious if you can name a preferred site (top yellow bar?)
