Hey! You noticed. Things were getting a bit too wonky with the site design, so we did a hard reset to make the site a little cleaner and easier to use.

The only "new new" thing is the Latest Activity page at the top of http://brooklynian.com/forum/ - it's designed to be a little less boxy and to emphasize the most recent comment on the post (rather than the original post itself).

There are bound to be issues with the new design, missing features that still need to be added back in, etc. Let us know what you think in the comments.

I prefer this look - it's much more 2012 than the old one!

That's what we're going for... The Amish look. Actually, the hygienic Amish look. Plain and clean.

      An Amish website? Seems incongruous

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

I miss the links to the main page at the end of each thread. Likewise, how do I mark things as read?

I am also having difficulty marking posts as having been read.

Some posts show as blue, others as black. I had assumed that blue meant unread, and would turn to black after being read, but that is not always the case.

OK, I added the "mark as read" link at the top of the page; and the main page links at the end of the page. How does it look now?

Unless you are using Internet Explorer, sometimes you have to refresh the page to see the forum listing turn to black after reading the post. We had that issue on the old site too. Though maybe it is a new problem. How does it work on iPad?

Both on the iPad (os 5.1) and on my iMac using the most recent iteration of Firefox, some posts are blue and others are black, and they stay that way after reading and after refreshing.

Even clicking the "mark all posts read" button has no apparent effect.

I fixed the blue/black link thing - that was a design issue. The unread posts function seems to be working for me? I will try one more test though.

The front page, http://brooklynian.com/forum/#forum-index is now divided into 3 sections.

      Section 1: Most recent stuff

Section 2: Summary of most recent stuff

Section 3: Stuff sorted by neighborhood and other category.

You may need to look at the page for those descriptions to make sense. That said, Can we lose lose section 2? I don't think you need both Section 1 and 2.

You are right - section 1 is a rewrite of section 2 and I keep meaning to delete section 2.

Question: Should you add BBW to the forums list on the top banner so its easier for those folks to find it?

This is my preferred launching point:
      http://brooklynian.com/forum/

So, when I click "neighborhood message boards" on this line:

BROOKLYNIAN » NEIGHBORHOOD MESSAGE BOARDS » CROWN HEIGHTS AND PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS

I think it should take me here:
      http://brooklynian.com/forum/

      not here:
      http://brooklynian.com/forum/neighborhood-boards/

i know the admins work hard, and for free, to keep this site up and running. i appreciate the effort. nevertheless, over the years the usability and layout of this site has declined. this has led to me (and probably others) visiting it and using it less and less. most every other discussion forum i use has a cleaner, easier layout, and one that doesn't cause IE to crash out instead of closing properly after my visit (i mostly visit from my workplace, so i don't have the luxury of changing browsers to accommodate the site.) i find the layout here confusing and clunky.

Thanks. Which IE version do you use that crashes? Also, can you give an example of a site with a better layout so I can compare?

I learn from one of my science teachers long ago.

      KISS

      keep it simple stupid!!

The more cooler you try to make it for a minority of peoples the worse it will get. just keep it normal standard and not try to write for all those new fangle toys out there. alot of people just use standard toys.

fair enough. I like simple too. but you have to be more specific - what parts of the site are "cool for a minority of peoples" that should be more simple?

FYI, I heard back from cyn707 that IE doesn't crash anymore with the new site design. PROGRESS!
