Functional Artists, Scuplture, and Furniture

I can't believe I've just now taken the first high-resolution shots of my work. I've been building and creating -wood and metal- objects and furniture for over 10 years now and today, finally, a decent digital image of a piece. Thanks, to my friendly neighbors, the Brooklyn artists behind the NeckLush - a unique accessory that's part scarf, part necklace, I will be able to participate in a little marketing project with Etsy.com, which the Necklush guys and I (GreenhouseFX) have utilized for sometime, even before we became studio neighbors. Troy and Stephano are some of the most dedicated and hard-workers in the building and I love their style and innovative thinking when it comes to creating. So here ya go.

Just wondering...this doesn't look functional, doesn't look much like art or sculpture and doesn't look like furniture. It must represent some kind of idea. Maybe the artist could explain his thought process on this.

lol! c'mon Pragmatic guy. your supposed to reason and perceive things in relation to their "observable, practical consequences". Did you ask the Ikea lamp in your living room his opinion on his social rank?

Sorry, NO IKEA lamp in my living room. All I was wondering, was what was this supposed to represent. What made you create this the way you did?

ok sorry for that. you may have a point. well, probably should made from cut-offs, or wood headed for the street. So the materials at hand more or less guide how the object is constructed rather than the artist have an idea 1st, design however and then just acquire supplies needed. Maybe it's not art but science. Problem solving...But I do have inspiration to use certain shapes, colors, and textures in ways that make it nice to look at. And then finally, I enjoy making things that have use or are decorative. This is a pendant light by the way that it's style I carried over from the way I built large sculptures which are sound diffusors that I hung on the wall to correct being in a echo-y studio.So there you go. If sound diffusion it's function enough for you, I give up. haha and if not sculpture, and not art. I don't understand that part of what you said was

Pragmatic Guy: thank you for asking the question. In this particular instance, I like the sculpture enough as is without needing to know what Mr. Greene was thinking.

After touring Storm King (loved it!), Dia in Beacon (loved it!) and Mass MoCA (hated everything there!!), I have concluded that Art is whatever an Artist (or artist wannabe, as the case may be) says it is, and non-artists can only shake their heads and wonder why.

We may appreciate the art or not... and in the final analysis we vote with our feet and our dollars.

I agree with what you said Booklaw. And thank you Mr. Greene for explaining your point of view. It's true that "art" is whatever the artist wants it to be but there's times when I look at something and scratch my head and wonder. This was one of those times.
