Jackson Pushes for Black Inclusion in MLK Memorial, Project President Makes Big Promise As Another Million Rolls In

      by Hazel Trice Edney

      NNPA Washington Correspondent

      Originally posted 5/18/2007

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – The top official of the project to construct a $100 million memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall has promised significant Black inclusion in the project, despite controversy over a major contract that’s already gone to a Chinese man.

“We want to make sure that African-Americans get the bulk of the work on this memorial,” says Harry E. Johnson, Sr., president and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc.

“We’re going to make sure that when we select the team to construct this memorial and win a $50 million or more contract, that they have the right look of this community and this country when they build the memorial.”

Johnson made the promise in response to NNPA questions that followed an announcement of another million dollar donation to the project, now at $79 million.

Art Ryan, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial, Inc., a multi-billion dollar insurance company that gave a million dollars to the project last week, says he trusts the project leaders to make fair decisions in contracting and hiring.

Pointing to Johnson as being among the chief decision-makers, Ryan says, “We are here, obviously to support Dr. King. And we have a lot of faith and trust in the foundation and the decisions that they’ll make. There are times when you want to make sure that you’re working with the right people. I’m very confident that I’m working with the right people and I will support their decisions.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson publicly lamented that a Chinese sculptor, Master Lei Yixin, had received the contracts for two sculptures, the “Mountain of Despair” which will be two pillars at the entry of the site and the “Stone of Hope,” which will hold the image of Dr. King.

“If they think that the Chinese guy is the best, it at least should be a joint venture,” Jackson says in an NNPA interview. “Part of Dr. King’s dream was uplifting African-American people and lifting the world up at the same time. Whoever does this gets a great boost to their reputation. Even with a joint venture, that is a great boost to their career.”

Johnson says that a majority Black Design Committee makes decisions on who will ultimately construct the memorial.

“The design committee is actually made up of 90 percent African-American,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it was an African-American artist that led us to the Chinese sculptor and said, ‘That is the man that can best do it.'”

But, Johnson says Yixin won’t be doing it alone.

“The Chinese sculptor would actually be in collaboration with two African-American sculptors; so he will not be out there by himself doing that.”

The monument will be built on a four-acre site near the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his famous ''I Have a Dream'' speech during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

According to the Memorial staff, the majority of the contracts and sub-contracts, including construction for the crescent-shaped walls with quotes from Dr. King and the rest of the four-acre site, have not been decided.

      U. S. Rep. Donald Payne of New Jersey, where Prudential is headquartered, recalled during the conference that Prudential invited King to Newark to speak in l965.

In prepared remarks, Ryan says he has not forgotten the principles for which he says his company stands.

“We still have a ways to go to fully eradicate prejudice, discrimination and injustice in our society and the world,“ Ryan says. “But with the lasting influence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are keeping our eyes on the prize and we will achieve Dr. King’s dream – which is in reality the dream of every American.”

Well, if it's the same type of committee that gave us the "Freedom Tower" , and that Freedom Tower is as ugly as Frank Ghery's vision of a Brooklyn stoop, then I agree with Jackson. Just because a black person endorses a Chinese designer doesn't mean he has visual eminence. Probably what should be done, speaking from the armchair, is you get a group of very artistic (versed in architecture, graphics , sculpture, etc,.)black students, or even a mix of different background students, from a few universities and have them come up with a fitting design and tribute to MLK. That I think would emphasize his speech (where his children and other children won't be judged by the color of their skin..) at the Mall.

Actually, if Martin Luther King Jnr were alive today, he'd probably turn in his grave.

Um , how could he turn in his grave , if he were alive today?

If he were alive today I'd treat him to a pack of Suzi-Q's and a Dr. Brown's Cherry soda. Then I would sing him "Happy Birthday" and treat him to the strip club on 2nd Ave and 39th in Sunset.

OOOOOH , about you're Suzi- Q's, I couldn't find any at the super market across the street. I did find a box of Hostess Twinkies. I just threw them in the trash. I ate one , and I swear , I wanted to puke. It was disgustingly disgusting! I used to love twinkies , but it's been 2+ years since I'd had one.

      Now , I'm afraid to try a Suzi-Q , after that feeling.

You can go ahead and sing your little heart out , but I don't think he would like a trip to a strip club.

MLK would definitely go to a strip club. I'll bet he'd pay $10 for a lap dance.

I don't know why you got Twinkies when I said Suzi-Q's. That would be like me getting a Whopper after you recommended a prime rib. I just hope you're not to late for the hubbie's birthday. Tsk tsk.

Because I'm certain he's buried at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta Georgia. I don't think they gave him the implements to dig his way out in the event of a resurrection, and I doubt anyone is monitoring the coffin so there'd be no way to sound the alert. So if he were alive today, he wouldn't be able to do much other than turn in his grave.

      LOL , wha?

How you gonna take him to the strip club and then make him pay for a hoe to shake her a$$ on him , around him, whatever.

      I told you , I couldn't find any of that slut's Q's , they only had twinkies!

So , I tried a box , well , I didn't want the whole box , but it was all they had.

The day of his birth is in about 3 weeks.

He said he wants no cake , nothing to celebrate...poor baby , he is still getting one.

I'm gonna have to just be extra sweet , so he is not so down on that day.

The more I think about it, the more I think that if MLK Jnr was alive today, he probably didn't last long. He was basically screwed.

Compare him with that Christ character. With a name like Jesus, you'd think he was Hispanic, but someone said he was Jewish. Whatever, they were both minority rights activists. But there's a big difference between this:

      and this:

With enough oxygen, and a roomy cave to move about in, Jesus could have conceivably levered off the stone, but MLK's sarcophagus looks pretty solid.

A whole lot of people out there are putting their faith in resurrection without thinking things through properly. Read the fine print. Maybe there's a place reserved for you in heaven, but where does it say who's paying for the ticket or driving the back-hoe?

      Character??

      Jesus (AS) , is Jewish.

MLK and Jesus (AS) , INcomparable.

If you think about it , getting to hell needs a paid ticket , because most of the things that are sins cost money.

      Getting to heaven is free.

Your faith, and good deeds are your ticket in.

But , whatever , believe what you want.

Don't want this to turn into a religion thread after this.

Jesus is either the Latin or Greek word for Joseph, more specifically Joseph Ben Joseph which was his Jewish name (you choose Hebrew or Aramaic), although I did hear he rode a mean low riding donkey on the way to the Passover feast where he drank wine with the unleavened gefilte filled pastilles.

Jesse jackson just wants someone black to do the design. i'm just pointing him out to be a racist. nothing more to that. the committee could pick anyone they want regardless of race like MLK would of wanted.

On another note, didn't anyone ever see the MLK episode of Boondocks?!?!

      Seriously, check it out.

Does anyone know why that "param" thing shows up on my link to youtube?
