Im new to the city heading out on my own. I'm not here illegally, I have a student visa, but that means I have to work off the books. Where can I get a job? How do I get a job? Its getting frustrating without any money. I am willing to work hard at anything that lets me work reasonable hours and helps me survive, but it seems no one wants to hire a South Asian looking dude for anything! Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The problem may be less your ethnicity than your need to "work off the books."
That is of course illegal.
