      This is on Gowanus Lounge:

      http://www.gowanuslounge.com/

Sounds like a great place to shop for a wilted lettuce salad.

Someone started a survey to bring to the owners. Take a minute to let the owners of Key food know HOW to fix this store of expired dairy and wilted produce:

Please go to the following page to answer the questions:

this is a rhetorical question, right? they suck hard. I go because it's very convenient, but the staff there is rude (manager with the big black mustache, female manager and most of the cashiers - except for the older lady with the curly grey hair - she's nice).

I never find what I want despite asking them to stock certain items (when you do this you should expect a big sigh because you are inconveniencing them and interrupting whatever else they might be pretending to do) and the produce section sucks

Their motto is "Why should we care? Where else you gonna go?"

Believe it or not, it's incrementally better than it was a few years ago. But it still sucks HARD.

The owners name is Mike ,who even the employees feel is an A-Ho.

      The nice woman is Joan.

I find the early crew to be very polite and helpful and advise you when there is a two for one sale on the product you purchase .

you are right the produce is sub standard, thats why I buy at C-Town. .

has anyone noticed there isn't a scale to weigh what you buy at Key Food..

the other guy I like is the very short produce stock guy who speaks Spanish. It's not his fault the produce stinks. He at least says hi to me whenever I am in.

I don't find their staff helpful at all, and besides Mike, the woman manager (the middle-aged one, not the tall young woman) has a nasty attitude all the time. I've asked very nicely if they could stock things and they don't even bother to write it down.

someone is going to have to show me this rotten produce. i've never had a problem with anything i've bought there, (aside from exorbitant prices,) in ~6 years. and it has definitely gotten cleaner, brighter, better selection over that time.

My wife and I live very near by so it is very convenient for us. Fortunately we do have a car so 95% of our groceries are purchased at stores other than Keyfood in Windsor Terrace (primarily we shop at Fairway). I agree with what is being said here the fresh food items (produce and dairy) are substandard and we only shop there as a matter of absolute convenience. The prices on many products are also inflated when compared to several other competitors in the surrounding area. However, we are friendly with most of the staff and the manager/owner (I think his name is Mike) is nice and responded appropriately when one of their former checkout girls was acting inappropriately in the surrounding neighborhood. On the positive side for the store they do have a very impressive and varied selection of beer.

I'm quite surprised to hear a nice comment about Mike. I say this after shopping at this store for 11 years.

Arock - I'm confused. Why should it matter to the manager what the cashier is doing in the neighborhood? At work...yes...outside...none of his business.

I have started a petition to protest the conditions, produce, etc. at Key Food. Between this and the survey mentioned, maybe we can pressure them to change. Please sign the petition!

      http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/WTKeyFood/

P.S. To the people who have never noticed the bad produce, maybe you shop there only on weekends? It looks fine today, but in a few days the same stuff is sitting there, and it's not so pretty. I have picked up zucchinis and had my fingers go right through it ... I've gotten other produce that is moldy, many bags of expired lettuce, etc. And the point others were making about the staff not responding to complaints is so true. Usually you just get a shrug.

i’ve been going to key food multiple times a week since as far back as i can remember. always been perfectly happy with both the food and customer service there. the woman pat is always friendly. i’ve never had a problem with anyone there. and i've never seen any rotten food… is there another key food in windsor terrace i don’t know about? i can’t believe this thread would be about the place on 11th ave by prospect ave.

I have never had a problem with the staff. The cashiers are nice. I just prefer not to spend $1-2 more then the competition for organic stuff and I don't want to buy old, rubbery, rotten produce. I do buy my cleaning supplies and my beer there. I think there is a lot of room for improvement and it would be a BIG asset to the neighborhood and great to not waste $$ on gas running to Park Slope. Improving the store is only a WIN WIN for Mike because more locals will spend their money at his store instead of Park Slope and Fairway and Fresh Direct.

Mike does not seem like the friendliest type, especially for an owner (you would think he would be greeting everyone and smiling). I will give you a short recap of what happened. Cashier was hanging out on neighbor's stoops before and after her shift, smoking cigarettes and acting like she owned the place. Residents asked her not to smoke on their stoops, especially when residing children were present. She responded with cursing and violent threats. A group of residents went to Keyfood to discuss with manager. We spoke with Mike who said he knew who we were talking about and that she was a troublemaker. He said he would handle it. She no longer sits on the stoop and smokes. There has been various incidents since then where eggs have been thrown at our buidling. Usually targeting a specific residence where the man who told her to leave the first time lives. Odds are she and 2 teenage boys are behind this. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I were on the sidewalk speaking with our neighbors early on Saturday night. The neighbors were holding their 2 week old newborn and my wife was almost 9 months pregnant. As we were talking a car drove by and threw an egg that hit my car which was right in front of us. Unfortunately none of us saw the license plate. My wife talked me out of trying to follow them. We called the police and they of course needed some info to go on which we really didn't have. Nothing has happened since but I'm sure this is not over. Throwing eggs at homes and cars is a longstanding teenage tradition and is generally harmless but I think it crosses over in to criminal behavior when there are newborn babies and 9 month pregnant women present. Anyway I don't really care about some eggs on the building this girl is troubled and is acting out and needs help before she does something really destructive to herself and/or others.

I agree with most of what has been said here, including the above statement! You are talking about the tall skinny one? Hopefully my girlfriend doesn't read this.

I never had a problem with bad produce at that Key Food, my problem has always been the lack of produce and the very high prices. You can never find spices besides parsley. I once went to that KF and there were NO apples. None. Twice there were no bananas. The meat/fish department is even worse. No salmon, no ground turkey. The only good part of that KF is there is almost never a wait for a cashier. Must be because many refuse to shop.

Despite living a few blocks away, I don't shop there. I get all my produce from Rossmans and my normal shopping from the 5th ave KF. Fairway is too packed for me.

To complain and actually be heard, you can fill out this on-line form:

      http://www.keyfoodstores.com/contactus.aspx

(the address is actually Prospect Avenue)

My main problem with the store is the lack of consistency in products stocked as well as the messiness of the shelves...they carry some kinds of natural meat once, then never again, and it's the same with baking products, so it's hard to know if you'll be able to reliably find anything when you go. I also agree that the produce is rubbery, old, and not always properly chilled.

And why do they carry sooo much Haagen Dazs but only a teeny bit of Ben & Jerry's?

The store is so conveniently located, the people who work there are really nice, and I think it would get more business if it spruced up a bit, as well as looked at the types of products it's carrying and asked what else the neighborhood wants.

That's a good point about the selection changing all the time. I get excited to see them carrying something, then it never appears again.

I urge everyone to complain via the online form, AND sign the petition listed above AND fill out the survey listed above! It will be so great if we can actually bring about some improvements in this store.

My boyfriend and I always had a bad experience when we asked questions about "mismarked" prices (always ended up being more expensive than listed). The manager was always rude and couldn't be bothered with us. The store is one of the dirtier supermarkets we've seen. We go to Pathmark now...

Yeah we run into the same issue with the prices being poorly marked. I will have to mention that next time i'm in there.

Since I am leaving for a Christmas vacation, I didn't need to buy many things that would simply waste away, so I decided to go to Key Food instead of Rossmans.

Apples were $2 a pound! Bananas were greener than astroturf.

He doesn't think a meeting is necessary apparently. I think it is time to light burning torches and storm the place! A supermarket coup. We need six to man the registers, two at the deli, apparently nobody to man the produce and two to give out surly attitude at the door!

Who says he doesn't think a meeting is necessary? I think they were also going to send the survey results to corporate.

The people on KWTNeighbors who kind of have been organizing this latest revolt against Key Food and have spoken to Mike who says he fixed the problems.

Each store is individually owned. Definitely fill out the corporate complaint form and hopefully people will take up the cause again after the holidays.

I am not sure how much headway you can make with stupidity. If someone doesn't see the dollars and cents they are losing by simply providing a little bit better product at a little bit better price....I am not sure if you can implant brains. In the end, it is his store and his right to sell crap. But I hope there is neighborhood meeting with him because I will be there!!

There is no corporate. Key Food is a buying coop and the markets are all indipendantly owned.

Just got back from Europe. Too tired to shop at better supermarkets, so I am off to Key Food. Hopefully I won't be back for the rest of 2009. Keeping my produce purchases to a minimum and will be going to Rossmans during the week.
