The bartender at Lookout Hill just told me it's their last night. I've never eaten there, so I can't vouch for their food, but they have one of the best bourbon selections I've ever seen.

eh. Never even THOUGHT about eating there. That place has changed hands so many times since I've lived here (11 years) that I can't even keep count. _________________ Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball!

Same here. Any restaurant -- Le Bernardin, Peter Luger Steakhouse, Katz's, and even Dunkin' Donuts -- that opens there will die. That location is cursed, haunted, and damned.
Their answering machine message says they are serving dinner starting at 5pm tonight.

I loved the idea of having that location as a live music venue as the previous business was, but was annoyed with the food and drink purchase requirement to attend musical performances.
I don't buy it that this location is "cursed." This location has just had a string of bad restaurants. Look how well Barrio is doing and everyone said that location was cursed too. I don't know if this corner needs live music or not, but it does need a place that serves good food. The people will come if they serve good food.

Well, I'd be happy to find out that I was given bad info, as I normally don't like any business shut down and people out of work. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

shame. their stuff was pretty good. that pork blt was pretty awesome. they had friendly servers. the prices were pretty alright. i went there on saturday and was told it was to become some sort of mexican beach bar kind of thing. IMHO not really an improvement.

anyone remember Bibi's, the place that preceded Night and Day there? that must have last, at most, two months.
agreed that it's no curse. every concept has gone in there, at least since i've been in the neighborhood, has been uninteresting, at best. a "Mexican Beach Bar" is not going to be any better unless the food is superb, which the term "Mexican Beach Bar" already scores a couple of points against.
i wish i knew something about running a restaurant, as I'd open up my dream Cuban spot there in a second.

I barely saw more than 1 or 2 tables filled at a time in this joint. Good draft list though.

the place isn't necessarily cursed. a dry cleaners did great business there for years before high rents forced it out.

please stop saying certain locations are cursed. it really makes you sound quite ignorant.
barrio is an excellent example of a location many said was "cursed" and it's now one of the most popular restaurants in park slope. it's about a quality product.
think before you speak, please. we have enough stupidity around us right now without adding this into the mix.
or maybe this location failed because you can see gowanus from the window?

I just hope it doesn't sit vacant. A good corner spot like really sets the tone for the block.

Yep, used to use them. Then they left and Bibi's started the current string of restaurant failures.

Ralph's. I used them too. They had a big Doberman that walked around the store.

Isn't the clock still there?
The only thing that would make that location "cursed" is a prohibitive rent. None of the restaurants in that spot since the laundromat has offered a consistent quality of food that matched their prices.
In this nabe *still the land of take-out and eat out
in this economy, a place with more modest prices would do better . . .
good luck to the next crew

That's right, which means it wasn't anyone's "dream." Just a kind of strategic venture by some people who apparently have a lot of money to give to interior decorators.

I still want one of those salad places where I can say "sun dried tomatoes, artichocke hearts, grilled chicken, blue cheese crumbles, croutons and balsamic vinagrette, please" _________________ Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball!

I'm with you on that Flexichick. A place like Chop Chop on Smith Street would be great!!
I'm pushing for one up on 7th avenue at Berkeley Place where Diane Kane just vacated. It's the perfect little spot.
And by pushing, I mean dreaming...

Dim Sum, Greek, Bahn Mi sandwich, or how about a Mooncake Diner outlet...they're expanding.
But, from what a poster above said it's going to be a Mexican Beach theme? Whatever the hell that is. Guess we'll have to wait until they close to get something actually good.

there's a dying breed. i remember those quite well as a kid in Jersey.
i think La Caridad 79 on 79th and Broadway, in Manhattan, is a real Cuban-Chinese place, with that awesome place on Columbus in the 80's (the name escapes me) being more of a south-american/Chinese place.
i don't know if you'll ever see a new Cuban-Chinese place open again, though.
We need a place that will serve me vaca frita in the Slope. real vaca frita. Victor's does it pretty well, Cuba on Thompson St. does it well, and Havana Alma de Cuba does it ok. Add the right little gimmicks and themes to the place (old guy rolling cigars, live music) and, damn, you're going to have one busy place in the Slope.

Vaca frita, yum... Hey, J0518, have you tried the vaca frita at Cafecito on Avenue C & 10th St.? My favorite.
Never really understood why no one can get it together to offer good Cuban food in NYC. Victor's is way too expensive & too touristy. Every other place I've tried has its own deficiencies. You can usually tell just from the rice & beans that they're not getting it right. Then you get improper marinading. Even the coffee is typically wrong - real Cuban restaurants don't give you sugar on the side; the coffee should be super-sweet to start with.

I've never had any issues with the Cuban food at Rincon Criollo, 40-09 Junction Blvd in Queens (1/2 block south of the 7 Train & Roosevelt Ave). I've eaten there with people born and raised in Cuba and they swear by it. I could eat a plate of rice there and be happy (but their vaca frita, chicken bits and other fried meats are delicious too).

the issue, to me, is simple: there aren't that many Cubans in NYC, and too many non-Cubans tried to cash in when Cuban themed things were cool.
I've been to Cafecito twice. got served yellow rice and black beans the first time, which is usually sign #1 that there ain't any Cubans running the operation. i talked to the owner, though, and he was a pretty nice guy, and of Cuban descent, if i remember correctly. i think i remember the food being ok the second time i was there.
you're right on every single point, though. no one, other than the two village spots, and the overpriced Victor's, gets it right.
i haven't tried Rincon Criollo, but i did try El Sitio in Woodside once and liked it.
i'd like to see something along the lines of Cuba or Havana Alma de Cuba in the neighborhood. I think it'd do really well, and wouldn't interefere with Bogota's business, since they're off doing something completely different.
I will say that one of the best places I've EVER been to is right across the bridge....Azucar in Edgewater and Jersey City. As good as the best Miami spots.
