My dented 17-yr-old Honda Civic was stolen Thursday night from Garfield Place (bet 8th & PPW). It had only 82000 miles and ran great, so I'm mourning its loss this weekend.
I just read the Police column from this week's Brooklyn Paper and see that 8 other Hondas, most of them 2000 or earlier - two 1991s - have been stolen in the past week alone. My loss was too new to have been listed in this item.
I don't know that much about car thets to figure out what's going on. Does anyone have a theory? For parts? For export to a third-world country? Teenagers joyriding?

A cop I once knew told me that they were one of the most sort after vehicles due to their consumer popularity. As a result, car thieves could part them out easily.

Mind you this conversation took place in maybe 1992, and I was in all likelihood very very stoned.

A quote: "The 1995 Honda Civic topped the NICB list as the most stolen vehicle during 2004, according to the "Hot Wheels" study from the National Insurance Crime Bureau."

IMO, it's either for parts or because the perp wants to use a car that blends in to use in the commission of another crime. Yours isn't a 1995, but I believe I've read that Hondas have been favorites over many years. Let's hope you recover yours. My wife would die if her young-in-mileage '86 Prelude disappeared; she's had it since birth.

don't drag racers like civics for their power/weight ratio?

that could have something to do with it, i guess....

Well, after being modded... I doubt that these cars are held on to long enough, but ya never know.

That's true. The civics are ligt and there are tons of aftermarket parts to make them very fast. Since the race them alot, they also crash them alot. This createsa need for the parts and my understanding is the're easy to steal.

Did you check to make sure it wasn't towed also? My car was once missing and when I called to report it stolen, they told me it had just been towed (too close to a hydrant). You should definately call the tow number to make sure if you didn't already.

I wonder if it was related to the engine part theft I saw a few weeks back. I thought it was a Toyota, but it definitely could have been a Honda.

It's all about mods/street racing... older honda's accomodate drag parts better than newer models (wider wheels etc).

It's all part of the HEXUS phenom (really, I'm the only one who calls it that...) but thug/thug wannabees pimping out Hondas to look like a lexus

Awfully sorry to hear that. I'm sure "closure" isn't much comfort.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Do you think it was just stolen for a joyride, or were parts taken as well?
